As long as I get to control the character's personality directly, I don't care who he is.

Agreed.

Seeing how Bioware decided to go with the new main character, I was wonder who or what you would have like to play as in the new Dragon Age?
I would have said "Warden". Why?
If there is a gun hanging on the wall in the first act, it must fire in the last.

If you put a dark ritual and the possibility of a godbaby at the end of a game, you must deal with its consequences (either the acceptance or rejection of the ritual) in the sequel.

But, at the end of the day, my Warden doesn't have to continue in Dragon Age games. (Morrigan does. Flemeth does. But the Warden doesn't have to.) What has to continue is the ability to feel like I get to make decisions based on how I imagine my character and then get something to think about as a result of what happens in the game. That's what RPG's are to me. They're not D&D. They're not dice rolls. They're not isometric combat or a bunch of menus and stats. They're character-based decisions and consequences set in a compelling, interactive world that hopefully have good enough gameplay to further draw you into your character.
I don't want to just be talked at because that's what movies and novels already do better than games and will always do better than games. Trying to become a movie is a losing proposition for games. You can't outmovie a movie. Games are interactive. That's the key.
If DA2 retains that, the lead character can be whatever Bioware thinks is best.
It's also worth noting that expectation can be different than reality. One of the reasons writers should be allowed to do their own thing rather than respond to the wants of gamers is because good writers can surprise you and come up with something better than you had imagined. Granted, it often doesn't work out that way. But Bioware's writers have, I think, earned the benefit of the doubt.
So maybe people think Hawke isn't what they wanted but come to like Hawke when they see what he/she can be and what RP opportunities are there.

As long as I decide how they act and get to be awesome, I'm gravy. I'm not on board with this whole "how dare this Hawke person overshadow my Warden" because... really, it comes down to me overshadowing myself.
