Sure but not everyone believes in religion.

They may use religion to you know gain.

Even if that's true, not everyone believes in something supernatural.

Well, I didn't mean religion specifically, but I agree with what you guys are saying.

Anyways, do Flemeth and Morrigan have the same feelings regarding the Chantry? If so, how would that work out (because they probably don't like each other very much, considering what happened in DA:O)?

I don't know, but remember that Morrigan has learned just about everything she knows about the world from Flemeth.  It's also probably safe to say that there is no love lost between Flemeth and the Chantry.

The writers allow the PC to hold somewhat modern beliefs, or at least beliefs that are out of step with what the average person in the setting believes.  There are indeed dialogue options that let you say you think the Chantry teaches superstitions.  If the writers felt that was absolutely impossible, I doubt they would have put it there.  Sort of like how the writers don't force human characters to see elves as "not really people" and worthy of no further aspirations than performing mundane domestic tasks.

Considering you can play Dalish elves and dwarves, there has to be some dialogue options about not believing in the Chantry or the Maker. And on top of those two, there would have been a huge outcry from outraged atheists and agnostics if the game "forced" you to believe in the Maker, even if you were human. I say this as an atheist myself, BTW. An atheist who cringed when Morrigan started blathering about "not believing in intelligent design". That broke the dreaded "immersion" for me, and it felt like Leli and Morri were a pair of modern political opponents debating on some TV talk show...

I think the game treated the Chantry pretty even handedly, showing that it did do a lot of good amidst all the usual "evils of organized religion". I just hope the Dalish and the Qun will be a little more multifaceted in DA2, just like the Chantry and the Dwarven belief system were shown to be. Compared to "serious", "historical" movies like Kingdom of Heaven, where all Christians=ev0l, heroes=post modern agnostics, Gaider and his colleagues were remarkably balanced with their portrayal.

I'm pretty sure that if the devs wanted to, they could have "forced" humans and city elves to believe in the Maker, and allowed only Dalish elves and dwarves the skeptical options.  There was already origin-specific dialogue in the game after all.

And on top of those two, there would have been a huge outcry from outraged atheists and agnostics if the game "forced" you to believe in the Maker, even if you were human.

Probably, but I'm not sure that the devs care all that much.  There's a huge outcry at having to play a human in DA2 after all, but I don't think that will be changed now just to be "fair" to those people.

Also, the game doesn't let you outright state that you are an atheist.  At least, I don't remember any such option.

I say this as an atheist myself, BTW. An atheist who cringed when Morrigan started blathering about "not believing in intelligent design". That broke the dreaded "immersion" for me, and it felt like Leli and Morri were a pair of modern political opponents debating on some TV talk show...

I'll give you that, it did feel like a modern conversation.

I think you might fight the Chantry in some way in DA2, I mean if you read the Thedas Timeline GI posted it said that Kirkwall is practicly ruled by Templars and they have an iron grip on the Circle there.

So maybe you fight those Templars and give the rule back to the Viscount of Kirkwall?

ironic that the hate atheists show towards christianity/catholicism in real world now starts to spread out even into RPG-s, despite that the faith ingame is not real

Nevertheless it sucks. The only good Chantry believer is a dead Chantry believer!
