No, they don't turn into darkspawn. A ghoul is any living creature that has been afflicted with the darkspawn corruption and survived the process-- and there are different stages from your typical (the standard "ghoul" you encounter, or creatures such as the blight wolf or the bereskarn) to the very advanced (the broodmother, a being who has had their corruption artificially accelerated). A darkspawn is a creature that is born from a ghoul, but that's the only way they're created.

So... Darkspawn come from Broodmothers, which are ghouls, not darkspawn, but ghouls are made from the darkspawn taint. I thnik that this proves the Chantry wrong. The said that the Tevinter Magisters were the first darkspawn when they were cast out of the Golden City, but given that they were tainted, and we know that the taint doesn't turn you into a darkspawn but a ghoul, and if you're female, you become a broodmother, which enables you to create darkspawn... then the Magisters couldn't have been the first darkspawn. Maybe Andraste herself created the taint to wekaen Tevinter, which would then allow her to overthrow it, but it went far beyond her expectations, and caused a full-scale Blight? Or perhaps it could have been a disastrous experiment with raw lyrium ( the idol) and some ancient type of blood magic. But the relationship between the Old Gods and the darkspawn is still an open mystery.

Darkspawn don't require food for sustenance. The corruption within them keeps them alive. They can eat... but if they do so they do it for reasons other than dietary.

I think the Dwarves may have created or discovered the taint somehow. Since the darkspawn first appeared and conquered the Dwarven Thaigs

Let's just say the lack of female Warden fertility is probably a good thing in this particular case.

Well, I doubt they receive a steady supply of dwarves or eat bugs down there in the Deep Roads, so somehow they stay alive. And it sounds rather plausible for me. Don't attack everything because DA2 sucked; even this thread is 9 months old (why someone revived it, no clue).

Yes, broodmothers do need to eat. If you want the simplest description, a broodmother is essentially a darkspawn factory (and a lovely analogy that is, too).

What puzzles me, though, is that Broodmothers are female ghouls who have basically been "defiled" by the darkspawn, until they turn into those fat fatties, and they give birth to darkspawn. What I'm wondering, though, is if a female ghoul can become a broodmother without all the eating and having bile and blood spewed into their mouths. Do the darkspawn simply do that to speed up the process? Or is that the only way a broodmother can be made? If so, then that makes a bit of a paradox. Broodmothers are females who have becomes ghouls and have been moulded by the darkspawn into darkspawn factories. Darkspawn come from broodmothers, and the darkspawn taint doesn't turn one into a darkspawn; just a ghoul. Good chance it was the original taint that infected a female and turned her into a ghoul, and eventually a broodmother. So where did The Taint come from? Tevinter spell gone awry? Corrupt lyrium? Defiled Golden City? Or is it just the Black Blood of the Earth?
