No, they don't turn into darkspawn. A ghoul is any living creature that has been afflicted with the darkspawn corruption and survived the process-- and there are different stages from your typical (the standard "ghoul" you encounter, or creatures such as the blight wolf or the bereskarn) to the very advanced (the broodmother, a being who has had their corruption artificially accelerated). A darkspawn is a creature that is born from a ghoul, but that's the only way they're created.Tirigon wrote...
Don´t they turn into Darkspawn if they refuse the Calling?
I don´t want to spoiler your books too much to those who haven´t read them yet but there are events who made me think they do.....
So... Darkspawn come from Broodmothers, which are ghouls, not darkspawn, but ghouls are made from the darkspawn taint. I thnik that this proves the Chantry wrong. The said that the Tevinter Magisters were the first darkspawn when they were cast out of the Golden City, but given that they were tainted, and we know that the taint doesn't turn you into a darkspawn but a ghoul, and if you're female, you become a broodmother, which enables you to create darkspawn... then the Magisters couldn't have been the first darkspawn. Maybe Andraste herself created the taint to wekaen Tevinter, which would then allow her to overthrow it, but it went far beyond her expectations, and caused a full-scale Blight? Or perhaps it could have been a disastrous experiment with raw lyrium ( the idol) and some ancient type of blood magic. But the relationship between the Old Gods and the darkspawn is still an open mystery.
