Yes, broodmothers do need to eat. If you want the simplest description, a broodmother is essentially a darkspawn factory (and a lovely analogy that is, too).

Well, this explains a lot about the whole darkspawn production process. But sheds little light on the final product.... So, darkspawn are more like bio-robots, androids? Or it's more like some living creatures, like, say, ants or bees?

I´m an elf myself, I may joke about them.

Also, people get offended all the time without reason. So I can not let that stop me.

I am not an elf, I am a human sitting before a computer typing stuff on the internet, elves are still my fav race and your comment just pissed me off, I hoped you get the clue why I replied what I did, instead you announced that you're an elf    ...

Wait so if Broodmothers are just REALLY advanced Ghouls and not Darkspawn how did the Architect cut the Mother off from the call of the Old Gods using his Warden-Blood ritual? It may work on Darkspawn but if Wardenblood cuts off the Calling in ghouls too you think someone would have figured out how to beat off the Calling (which I assume is the tainted blood simply making a Warden ever more ghoul-like) by giving him an infusion of Warden blood (except he is FULL of Warden blood anyway)

It all hurts my head

By the way - yes... So, while they don't need to eat, they can eat. Do they digest food and get fatter?

I am curious about something Hespith says.  It's something like, "the men are merciful, they kill, but the women touch..." and goes on to describe how these "women" took Laren and made her eat the others.

In the context it sounds like Hespith is referring to female darkspawn.  I've never seen a darkspawn with sex characteristics, though.  Maybe she means ghouls?

I don't think this is what she says. I think she says something like "To the men, they are merciful, they kill..." meaning they kill the men, and then she says the stuff about what happens to the women that implies force feeding and rape, but I don't remember it saying anything about female darkspawn.

But she went on for a bit about the women "doing things" to you.  I don't have the toolset so I can't check the exact wording.

The line is: "The men, they kill... they're merciful. But the women, they want. They want to touch, to mold, to change until you are filled with them...."

I see this as "they kill the men prisoners , they want the women prisoners for something else.
I didn't see it as "the men darkspawn kill the prisoners and the women darkspawn want the prisoners for something else".

Yes, "the women" refers to the women prisoners (being compared to the men prisoners). Just a stilted sentence structure.

I have to admit, the first thing I thought of when I read the topic was "Adventurers."  Good times in BG 2.

Don´t they turn into Darkspawn if they refuse the Calling?

I don´t want to spoiler your books too much to those who haven´t read them yet but there are events who made me think they do.....

The sad thing is, you *know* some crazy Warden, at one point or another, decided to test this theory and locked someone up until they found out.

Actually, all this sounds similar to xenomorpth biology to me... No, really. Aliens eat to grow and develop, but they don't die of hunger. They still eat though if they find any food, but feeding chestbursters is the priority, right? Are darkspawn the same? Adults don't need to eat, but small ones need to? And what is this fleshy growth on the walls? Food source?

Xenomorphs feed partially off of electric fields, too.  Sorta...plantlike, I suppose.

DanteCousland wrote...

Wait. The Broodmothers have breasts, Breasts are used to nourish a baby with milk when its growing. whats the point of it having breasts then if the darkspawn don't feed on them, especially having so many :/.

Because the person Broodmothers were created from had breasts?  Also, it's scarrier this way.

No, they don't turn into darkspawn. A ghoul is any living creature that has been afflicted with the darkspawn corruption and survived the process-- and there are different stages from your typical (the standard "ghoul" you encounter, or creatures such as the blight wolf or the bereskarn) to the very advanced (the broodmother, a being who has had their corruption artificially accelerated). A darkspawn is a creature that is born from a ghoul, but that's the only way they're created.

Huh, so the Broodmother is, technically, a ghoul.  I suppose that may explain how whatshisface screwed up with the Mother.

Question, though.  Most ghouls die horrible, horrible deaths typically a few months after being tainted.  Every tainted creature--blight wolves, bereskarn, etc.  Especially humans.

However, there seem to be some...well, exceptions.  Corrupted Spiders, for example, are tainted.  Corrupted.  Whatever.  They, however, do not seem to worship the darkspawn or the Archdemon the way other ghouls do.  Heck, the corrupted spiders feed heavily on the darkspawn, to the point where when the darkspawn go on the Blight, the large population not only didn't leave with them, but they started starving because their main food source disappeared.

Then there are other circumstances where some will survive the taint for significantly longer.  Your friend from the Dailish Origin, for instance.  The Broodmothers, for another.

I mean, is there a point where if you become *too* tainted your body simply gives up and accepts it instead of fighting it until your death?

Bleach example:

low rank hollows eat humans/souls and are like animals, the more they eat the more stronger/intelligent they become, sooner or later hollows don't find enough "nourishment" in simple humans and start to eat eahother until they evolve, ironicly the most evolved hollows look much alike the humans, simply because they were their main source of "energy"

top result are the Espada

this makes it likely that darkspawn from Blight 6 or 7 will be more stronger and intelligent then those which were in Blight 3 or 4

So Im guessing a broodmother is a-sexual, it reproduces with itself?.

Does such breeding have anything to do with typical mammal female reproductive organs? Now this bothers me...

dead bodies are "eaten" by broodmothers for the first couple of darkspawn to be born until the "blueprint" gets memorized

So, broodmothers basically create organic living replicas of dead bodies? What about ogres then?

DG said darkspawn are not living. So broodmothers take dead and decomposed flesh and replicate it into animated dead. It's not creating living organics.

:blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink:
Sooooooooo, Architect awakened a broodmother. She's  ghoul... So a ghoul can be awakened. So if Warden becomes a ghoul later on, he can be awakened, maybe like Architect's ghoul warden sidekick?

Now my head hurts too... It's like a logical chain from Monty Python - if she weights as a duck, then she's made of wood and therefore she's a witch...

Darkspawn don´t evolve. No breeding = no evolution.

I agree. But it makes me wonder how to classify what happened to the Architect. Some people argued with me that the development of heightened intelligence was a evolution that all darkspawn had a right to experience. I felt it was a fluke. LOL

Hm. Well being turned into a Warden doesn't just require darkspawn blood, it also requires the blood of an archdemon, right? So what is the Warden equivalent of an archdemon? The blood of an untainted Old God?

And it seems like turning someone INTO a ghoul would turn the Calling on, not off, then the awakening turns the calling back off.

Your average fat ogre is no more productive than a slim one. Even less - he will often stop to take a break, will fart a lot etc., and overall will be less effective in combat.

P.S. I they were animated dead they won't die of lethal injuries like dagger in the heart. Yet look at ogre that Duncan killed. Doesn't look undead to me.

Broodmother Level 1 ---- produces Genlocks, 1 per minute max.

Broodmother Level 2 ---- + 5 breasts, + 2 metres belly size, increases production speed to 30sec.

Broodmother Level 3 ---- +4 breasts, adds tentacles for self-defense.

Broodmother Level 4 ---- + 20 breasts, + 50 metres belly size; Ultimate version, inspires all Darkspawn around it, increases production speed of Genlocks to 15 sec, allows creation of Genlock emisaries and alphas, requires twice as much ressources (food) as before. Only 1 is allowed.

Ugly corpses? And then genlocks eat their roasted legs while telling stories by the fire...

No, seriously, they simply die, like any ghoul. That's why they go to Orzammar when they get old - to die fighting, instead of dying as a ghoul, horrid suffering included...

The Architect wonders that, too. He is tempted to turn Gaider in a ghoul and force him to explain:devil:

Seriously though, I hope the Architect story is expanded, either in a new game or in another novel.

Unfortunately this is unlikely considering a possible ending in Awakening.

while this may have been a joke it is close to truth I think, except that a broodmother will always create the darkspawn that is "chained" to its own race, like a dwarven broodmother will always create only Genlocks

Broodmothers are like Ant Queens in this perspective
