Wait. The Broodmothers have breasts, Breasts are used to nourish a baby with milk when its growing. whats the point of it having breasts then if the darkspawn don't feed on them, especially having so many :/.
Artists find them endlessly fascinating.
as do we all David...as do we all...
well straight males anyway...and a lot of females too I suppose...
but yah..

They're kind of an old joke, nevermind.joriandrake wrote...
there is no "broodfather", as darkspawn are similar to a virus they use the corpses as the closest thing you could call a "broodfather"

I also like the idea of a high dragon broodmother. I believe the archdemons are considered males, so they couldn't be broodmothers. (although the nature of the archdemons is still pretty mysterious, they may be kind of like fade spirits too)
I also wonder if aquatic creatures can become tainted/broodmothers. Or fade spirits physically manifested in the world?

How does on paticular darkspawn
become an emissary, do they just show paticular talent at magic?
I think it was said that the emissaries specifically show up during blights, so perhaps the presence of the archdemon affects their magical/cognitive abilities.

Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hated as she is violated.
Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she's become the beast."

Edit: I am wondering why the darkspawn would beat them and eat some of them?
Day 5, 6, 7 and 8 makes me think of rape.

He says they don't need to eat to sustain themselves. They can eat, but not for sustenance. Often you hear people referring to the darkspawn eating people- Morrigan says she thought that was what they were doing after the battle of Ostagar, for instance. We see the ogre in the Tower of Ishal appear to be eating the dead soldiers. So they eat, but not for nutrition's sake- something else is going on that is as yet unclear.AbounI wrote...
So David has told that darkspawns do not feel the need to eat.
But in the Stolen Throne, chapter 14, before Maric has found his sword, there are some interesting lines concerning that subject. The book described something (perhaps dead spiders) that has been eaten by something.Do the spiders eat dead spiders?Cannibal spiders?
"Peut être que ce qui les a mangées ne se préocuppait pas de ce qu'il mangeait", said Rowan
possible translation: "perhaps that what did eat them didn't mind about what they eat"
sorry, cannot give you the exact lines, because my book is a french one, so not only my own french to english translation will be exact, but also the true number of those pages I am refering to.
so here it some entries that let me think the darkspawn probably feel the need to eat
That's my handle on it, anyway.

Now I'm kind of curious what she means by, "It's another girls turn." I don't see any mention of a first girl.

Well it might also depend on how you interpret "in her mouth they spew."

But no seriously, I thought they didn't need to eat, just felt the need for carnage? I'm not sure though, been a good while since I read the book I think i'm referencing...

Not to mention that there would be few inhibitions against using darkspawn for dangerous tasks.

Well, wouldn't capturing a broodmother prove lucrative for a slaver faction? If they subjugate the resulting darkspawn, they would have a steady source of hardy, low upkeep labor.

Problem would be control.
Best you could do is point them in one direction.
Not good labor if they only eat and kill.

Already happens in DA:O, or did you forget Branka ? But you cannot control darkspawn so you cannot use them to do any task other to work as living trap detectors as Branka does.

great idea tying tainted monsters to yourself with bloodmagic, risking a near-sure corruption of yourself, aye
