It should have looked something like this (Well, replace the helmet with a dragon skull or something):

I didn't like the way that even the unique items had their colour dictated by their material, and how the level-scaled loot changed colour with level. If I wear a suit of armour, it has to match. I couldn't wear the Helm of Honnleath with anything because it was the wrong colour, it just looked stupid with silverite armour.
I thought it worked with darker tones, the Knight Commander Armours (templar and Warden`s Keep DLC). If the apperance is identical though, scaling the loot becomes as bad as in ME. At least despite the recycled design silverite chainmail look way more impressive than grey iron and steel.

I suspect you'll get one of each type of sword and one generalized outfit that's applicable to all classes. Once you recruit Bethany the mage, she'll be able to learn enchantments that upgrade the armor and weapons.
Streamlining, remember?
I thought only the Tranquil could do enchancements.....

While we're at it, how about some armor that actually looks like it's name suggest. For example, the Dragonbone armor looked nothing like bone. Nothing at all.

The ostentatious style of WoW armor should not be copied, but I think a more loot-heavy dynamic wouldn't hurt. I should have choices between many very great pieces of equipment, to vary character builds, rather than there being only one good choice (Andruil's Blessing, Key to the City, Helm of Honnleath, etc.). And although it's probably unavoidable, I'd prefer it if the best items in the game didn't come from DLC.UndercoverDoctor wrote...

The best gear also should not come from gold; there should be many difficult encounters like the High Dragon that drop great pieces of gear. Hawke's story is supposed to be about acquiring power and wealth, right?

Completely agree here. All the best items are either DLC or purchased (for obscene amounts of gold). There should really have been a few more items that were dropped by elite bosses or sidequests (like the Juggernaut). It kind of felt like all the original looking armor was meant for warriors, while pretty much all the mage robes were one of two designs (circle robe or barbarian robe) and the rogue armor was just a slight variation on one (with covered leg or bare leg). Also found it strange that the only set bonus unique gear was (once again) warrior based - Juggernaut, Legion, Duty, Diligence, etc. etc. etc. There are no special leather armor sets other than the drakescale, and no mage robes at all with glove and boot to match.

I thought his story was about becoming the Champion of Kirkwall?
I do agree that the better loot should come from encounters, but I don't think you should take all good items from the stores either. There definately needs to be a balance. Honestly I wouldn't mind having to find materials for things like swords and armor, I think it would add a lot to the game

The Glaive weapon Hawke has is a good start for new weapons. As for armor we had Wade in Origins and Awakening make armor and weapons for us. I'd like to be more involved in that process. Awakening let us dubble in what enchantments we wanted, but I want to see it go further. When we bring a material to a master smith give us a blank template and let us choose what it looks like. Then hit us with a list of materials to bring what we created into reality. I'm not a programmer so what I asked for maybe impossible but hopefully it sparks an idea that can be usable in the game.
modders manage to do it with the WinterForge modd
i think thats the name of it im not sure

You don't need ''cool armor'' you need armor that protects you, armor that is practical.

There is no reason why it can't be both cool and practicle.
OT: I'd say some customability to the armor. Maybe go for more a a D&D/Oblivion style whith different peices of armor, i.e. leggings, gloves, pauldrons etc. Lets use choose, to an extent what it looks like if we firge it; which I think we should be able to do. Give more variety to the look and types of weapons. More varied weapon skills. definatkly some good looking mage robes. And hoods, we need hoods.
