The problem was that it created a tremendous disconnect between what I wanted to do as a player and what made sense for my character to do.

So you were metagaming, and now you're complaining about it?

For new players, it was also very easy to completely miss out on Leliana and Sten. I know first hand.

Sten does betray the Warden if he is brougth to the mountains....Sten is not a fan of mountains

Zev can also betray you too....both can....there risky people to have around. I was scared to give sten a sword incase he loses it.

Isn't pardoning criminals to get them to fight alongside you a standard thing for Wardens?

In fact, that's how the PC gets recruited in two of the origins.

They should put in more situations where trusting someone who isn't necessarily trustworthy is a bad thing to do. Throw in a situation, similar to the Zevran one, that makes the player think, "Oh, cool, I get to recruit another character!" Only for the first time you take them along in your party for them to immediately attack you.

I have no real problem with the Zevran/Sten recruitment, I just think we need for such a decision in a game to, for once, be a BAD idea.

I'll admit, it's a hard decision to do without meta gaming.

That's possible true.  Certainly for Zevran.

If this is a real problem, the solution is to avoid telling us who the companions are.  Then there's no way for us to metagame this sort of decision.

You people are ridiculous... no one is forcing you to recruit Zevran or Sten... just let Sten rot in his cage and kill Zevran if that's what you feel like doing. I, for example, never knew Wynne was a companion, my city elf warrior killed her stright away when he saw her. I mean, an old ugly b*tch saying to me "rabl rabl rabl, not getting in that tower rabl rabl over my dead body", I was like "If that's what it takes, fine" and she was dead in a mater of seconds. I, actually, was kind of shocked to find out that she is one of the companions.

That's how it should be for all the companions.  There are very good gameplay reasons why we shouldn't be told the identities of the companions in advance.

I heartily agree.

While I knew that Zevron was a potential companion that probably added a lot of gameplay, I decided to kill him because I just couldn't see why anyone in their right mind would say to someone who just tried to kill him or her: "Hey! Why don't you come along with me on a mission that will probably decide whether a blight comes and takes over the whole freaking world and kills every single human, elf and dwarf? Oh, and the fact that you just tried to kill me has no effect on whether I trust you or not!". ???????

I think what would be an amazing strategy for BW would be to include some companions who DO have the potential to turn around an kill you.

Take Mass effect 2. I had this same exact problem with recruiting Grunt. Because it IS a video game, players automatically know that there is no real risk involved in "waking up" grunt and allowing him to join your team. After all, why would Bioware include him if not to give the players another companion?

I would have loved to see some sort of dynamic where, if not handled correctly, Grunt would kill the player upon awakening or kill/ leave Shepperd if not given extreme care.

I would like to see that with future "suspicious" potential companions in all future BW games. That would be epic. It would really make the player feel that the game is realistic and that he or she really does need to consider every new teammate before allowing them to come and join.

It's not about decisions, it's about "visceral combat"

characterized by or proceeding from instinct rather than intellect: a visceral reaction.

characterized by or dealing with coarse or base emotions; earthy; crude: a visceral literary style.

---- and of course by crude/ and base and lacking intellect they don't mean "dumbing down" oh wait...

Goes to show how it really is different for every player. I usually wind up getting both of them, but I always have an easier time recruiting Zevran. His "appeal" is rather convincing and you also just kicked the snot out of him so I wasn't too worried about what would happen if he were stupid enough to try again.

Sten, on the other hand. I love the character so much. Probably my favorite companion in the game. But I still metagame every time I recruit him because for me, Bioware did not provide a very compelling case for freeing him. He's such a dick (especially at the start), his crime is so heinous and he offers no real explanation and he is an ungrateful turd about your rescue, I had no idea he was actually recruitable until my second or third playthrough.

Pretty much, yeah.
