Prisons exist as punishment. They're designed to make people sit down and think about where it all went wrong. I'm well aware that quite a lot of people do not do this, and in those cases, they require more punishment.

What's the alternative? Letting them walk away?

No, they do not. People simply like to think they do.

Prison exist for two reasons.

1. Remove dangerous individuals from the general population.

2. Rehabilitate the inmates.

And how do you rehabilitate when being in the prison doesn't do the job? You have to take more extreme measures.

He was talking about the guards actually. The guards get meaner the longer they beat, so they rotate them out.

Which means that in addition to containing sociopathic individuals, it is also generating them.

You fail psychology forever.

If rehab fails, you simply contain them until they die.  Much better at festering that individual's sociopathy by beating them and making new ones out of the 'punishers' as well.

I leave them be. till the next prisoner I talk to tells me about the whole guard/anger/prisoner/shanking thing anyway.

Then I have a reason to get involved . . . if I feel like it.

So why not just cut off all their arms and legs?

They are no threat at all that way.

Then he can't feed himself.

Worried about his wellbeing, Shand?

How noble of you.

If the guards become bloodthirsty from dishing out beatings, I'd be disturbed about the kind of people I'm hiring. This should be something they have to do, not something they want to do. Normally I'd say the Warden should hire better people, but considering what kind of man he is, I can see where it comes from.

Prisons worked better when they actually made the prisoners work and didn't give them the luxuries of TVs and weight-rooms, etc.

I let it continue. Aside from being none of my damn business, if you ever talked to the other prisoners, you'd know that he killed someone in the showers. Not to mention he's at Purgatory in the first place, which means he probably did something terrible to begin with. He deserves it.

My only problem with this train of thought is that he killed someone you apparently think deserves a merciless beating - being in Purgatory after all - so...what's the big deal about the 'killed a man in the showers' part?

Because he's clearly not learning his lesson. If simply being in the prison won't make him better himself, he must be beaten.

And beating him teaches... what, exactly?  'Don't get caught'?

No. It will make him think twice before going around killing people. It's not like he's going to get away with it inside of a prison. Much less a crowded shower.

Ha haha ha.....Nope. The prisoner   next to him tells you he gets meaner after  EACH beating and when he's relesed he gets set back. So that beating does nothing.

He was talking about the guards actually. The guards get meaner the longer they beat, so they rotate them out.

No, he was refering to the prisoner  .........proof

Not they don't rotate guards through prisons.Image IPB

You would be amazed, simply amazed, at how quickly it happens. To simple, "normal" people.

Besides which, that is the point of the beatings.

Remember that quote from Neitzche?  "He who fights monsters..."

Better to just not involve such savage corporal punishment to begin with if you want your guards to remain safe to discharge back into society.

You are such an unintelligent man. It's a pleasure to converse with you.

Okay, let me explain this in greater detail so you can try and grasp it.

If I need a machine or an extra person to feed this miserable piece of murderous flesh then I'm losing money. It's cheaper to slap some slop on a tray and slide it through as lot in his cell.

Funny thing though. The more a guard does it, the meaner he get's. So they rotate them through.

To me, that means they rotate the guards so that they don't get too insane.

Pad on the fact you would have to cloth and bath the prisoner.

That's more money.

The "chop his limbs off" bit was to see how far you would go.

At that point you should simply kill them

How about "ban the beatings so you don't waste money rotating guards"?

And it seems Shand is still oblivious to the fact that he fell for a Batman Gambit...

I doubt they rotate the guards out of the actual prison, so they don't spend any extra money. Plus, in a prison like that with such violent criminals you need mean guards.
