I think I'll just clarify things for everyone here.
Since I live in South Africa, Durban KZN, to be exact i can assure you that his accent is indeed an attemped at an Afrikaans accent. However its an extremely poor attempt and in no way am i surprised.
The sad thing is that most South Africans in movies and games are almost always portrayed as Afrikaaners. There are two types of white south africans and one is the the Afrikaans group. They decend from the French Huguenots and Dutch Origins. The other group are English speaking white South Africans. Our group is mainly comprised yes you guessed it English decent. Truth is I think a wealthy South African like Hock with all his knowledge of art and such would have been better voiced over by an English speaking variant. Our accent is exceptionally different andmuch nicer on the ears... or so ive told

As an Afrikaans South African I have to second ObSiDion's comment. I heard Hock's accent for the first time this week and it's horrifying - I was incredibly tempted to just turn off the sound for that mission. Nobody here sounds like that. It's an overblown caricature that veers between Afrikaans, Scottish, Australian and Austrian, and I think BioWare should offer South African players free BioWare points as an apology for the ear-withering heinousness of Hock.

The closest thing to a South African accent I've heard in any game or movie was the actual Afrikaans enemies in Far Cry 2. Though it was kind of annoying to be able to understand them, since the insults they use is very "kommen", and makes me feel like I lose a couple of brain cells each time they yell "JOU POEPHOL"

To me he sounds like a Canadian trying to sound Afrikaans and not succeeding.
I'm from SA and my first language is Afrikaans and I would never have associated Donovan Hock as an South-African

LOL! Do they actualy call you a "poephol" in Far Cry 2?? I need to get the game now.
BTW "poephol" is Afrikaans for "****" a more direct translation would be a "Fart hole". And "Kom in" (not kommen) is usaly radio speak for "come in"
