Pure speculation on my part but I see the Chantry possibly moving into a more sinister role for DA2 and Cassandra and Hawke having a sort of Javert/Valjean relationship (if you're familiar with Les Miserables at all). Which I think would be a very interesting dynamic, personally. Now I'm kind of hoping this is the direction DA2 will take. Thoughts?

Quite possibly. Though, on the other hand, I could see Hawke not only being a great enemy of the Chantry but also being a great champion of the Chantry, depending on what choices you make. For all we know, the reason she's interrogating Varric is to decide whether or not he should be named one of the Anointed. (Chantry's version of Saints, it seems)

I assume Chantry is pursing your sister.

You as Hawke*another possible mage* must fight to protect her and yourself.

Huh? I'm missing stuff here... Who is this Cassandra lady and what does she want with Hawke?

Cassandra is the black-haired woman in armor that's in some of the released concept art so far. All we really know about her is her name and that she's looking for information on Hawke (she looks to be interrogating the dwarf in one picture) and how he/she became the Champion of Kirkwall. The rest is speculation but I think her character design really screams "antagonist".

Does the Chantry have any authority outside Ferelden/Orlais anyway?

I hope not. Bioware doesn't do great female villains, or at least, female main villains.

And whilst I would like them to finally manage to write a good female villain, I'd rather they play it safe with this game.

No idea but I'm picturing her as I guess whatever the Chantry equivalent of a Spectre from ME would be.

You never saw any female templars...i suppose an inquisitor would be sort of like a spectre.

Chantry is big. Way big.

The Imperial (black) chantry holds Tevinter, the Divine (white) chantry holds everything else that the qun does not. Except for scattered pockets of barbarians and pagans (Chasind, Dalish, Dwarves)

There are female Templars (Awakening).

The Inquisitors are described as being The Templars internal affairs.

Do we know which Chantry Cassandra belongs to? I assume the traditional Orlesian based Devine Chantry due to the Templar connection.

Actually there is Rylock or whatever her name is in Awakening--the one chasing Anders. But yeah inquisitor fits the bill nicely.

I don't think Hawke will end up interacting with her at all. She seems more like a tool to help narrate the story. Who knows though?

I'm picturing her tracking down former comrades of Hawke's and getting a piece of his/her story with each one until she finally encounters Hawke at the end.

The main antagonist of DA 2 is Hawke's beard.

The Dwarf doesn't look like he's being interrogated here, more like he's copping a crafty stare.

Well, yes but maybe the story does not end by the time it is being told (ie: it is told from the past, but by the end of the game, the narration and the action are in the same timeline), this would allow the PC to interract with Casandra late in the game ?

I'd rather support the chantry rather than go against it. Beside the chantry itself is to big and to abolish the chantry you'd have to raze the grand cathedral in Orlais to the ground.

I think you're confusing antagonist for protagonist. The beard is obviously the real hero here.

Indeed, question is one of perspective.

Interrogation session for Cassandra and ogling session for Varric.
