Personally, I found most ME2-armours too bulky. Ivy is an Inflitrator and when she wore the Kestrel armour it just looked way too hindering if she's crouching in a tight spot trying to snipe something. The shoulder pads looks like they're in the way of movement when trying to aim etcetc. Additonally, the new N7 armour looks like it's made of plastic. The kind of plastic that breaks into pieces when it gets cold.

I was very unhappy with the armours before I learnt how to mod the ini-file. And then came LotSB and Tela Vasir's armour. And whilst there are boob-cups in it, it's not as defined as the new N7 armour. It looks easy to move in, the material doesn't look like it's made of hard plastic and it still looks like it gives good protection. My only nag is the heels (hate the high heels!) but eh...I try to ignore it.

@ sable: love the blog post!
re: shep's armor - i think it really depends on the shep. kyrie is an adept, has barrier flaring all over the place in 99.9% of her battles. so
1) that overheats her FAST. the less plastic, the better.
2) she runs around the field a LOT, hiding in cover, vaulting over crap, throwing out singularities. the plastic armor looks challenging to run in. adept ninja needs ninja-suiting.
3) whatever the heck they do to armor in the future must be able to make amazing fabric, so i'll buy it that light/medium/heavy armor can be made out of recycled scuba suits and still keep out bullets
and mostly...
4) I like the profile of my shep in light armor. i got used to it in ME1, so in ME2, she just looked bulky to me. I had this idea of her as this cross-country runner's build (biotics go through a LOT of calories, after all), so armor-bound, muscle-bound shep was just not how i saw her. i felt the need to go back to the jumpsuit, if only to give the illusion that she had a particular build.

my reasoning, anyhow. however, i LOVE jessica in the crab-suit, as it fits her to a T.

I love this point. My rationalization for the "inappropriately dressed" squaddies in Me2 was base don how they fight in combat, all of the them (exceptions being Kasumi and Tali) are biotics so they ahve their own personal barriers and their biotics are their main weapon. Tali's entire species wears skin tight envirosuits(sp?) and Kasumi's a stealthy Theif. that and most of them don't have a formal military background. (Jacob being the obvious exception). It was hilarious that at one point I made Kallen wear a dress into the collector ship so the only peice of armor she had was the breather helmet.Image IPB (oddly enough he never even lost her kinetic barrier during the fighting, suck on that Harbinger)

My issue with the belief that an ideal armor set should feature no contouring for breasts is that there's an implication that the default look is that of a male silhouette. I see nothing wrong with shaping the breasts as this does not automatically lead to an overtly sexualized character.

This took me ages to find, but I think it sums up the whole female armour situation quite well.

@Akari Tenshi That first screenshot is terrific, the biotic dome behind her is lovely. (completely not au fait with biotic power names)

Thanks. It's a singularity by the way. :)

Since anyone's been doing one lately... ^_^

Didn't specifically design her after one of those in the beginning, but i'd say she's close to Jennifer Garner and these characters could describe her personality best.

Image IPB

1. Benjamin Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) – Dutiful, takes risks and does what needs to be done, even if it's sometimes in a renegade-ish manner. Can take things very personal.

2. Aeryn Sun (Farscape) – Born aboard a starship and very well skilled in hand-to-hand and weapons combat.

3. Shane Vansen (Space: Above and Beyond) – Demonstrates courage, leadership, and determination. Since her „death“, she is often haunted by those memories.

4. Olivia Dunham (Fringe) – Driven and brilliant. Exposed to all these events regarding the Reapers and doing her best to handle all this.

5. Jadzia Dax (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) – Humorous, clever and fun-loving.

6. Sydney Bristow (Alias) – Both physically and emotionally strong, has to deal with apparently loosing one of her best friends (Ashley) and a good fellow (Kaidan). Temporarily working together with an Organization she actually hates.

7. Kaylee (Firefly) – Sweet, loves being on the Normandy. Could be described as the soul of the ship (togetherwith Joker and Dr. Chakwas). Since her first encounter she has a crush on Liara.

I kinda hate the Kestrel chestplate, mainly because of the pasted on pecs. But that's just me. I'd rather a chestplate shaped like the one on Lady Hawke's armor-

Out of interest, do any of you roleplay your FemSheps with flaws? I've been thinking about this in light of all the character inspirations people have been sharing, since people tend to pick the attributes they admire and amalgamate them.

Zara is perhaps too rational. She'll express compassion, but it's more academic than empathetic. She is a colonist/sole survivor, and in my opinion you can't really survive that without shutting down emotionally, at least to some degree. She's not a casual killer, but she weighs up human life without much compunction.

She lets the hostages die to kill Balak; negotiating with terrorists is a losing strategy in the long run. (Conversely, she will save the workers on Zorya; her squad member was responsible for starting the fire, and Vido is still a mercenary, not a terrorist.) She'll shoot Vasir's hostage through the arm: it's the most efficient solution, and the hostage will probably live.

It's a matter of perspective. For some people, these are just the choices of a badass Renegade who's out get the job done. But I see Zara making them because she's more emotionally disfunctional and feels in control when viewing the world in a logical manner.

@yuki:  Yep! Thats one the most realistic pieces I have seen in a computer game!

But in Kestrels defence at least Bioware didn't just up the chest. They did actually put some support on the back. Unlike poor Miri...

Oh yes, I was just thinking of this. I love Lady Hawke's armor here. In a strange way it reminds me of current day female military attire, in that it's analogous to the male version just fitted to a woman's proportions.

It's wonderfully practical looking, and she still looks like a woman.

Well we cant complain too much about her armour... Bioware has got things together. I mean it might not quite be perfect but a few years ago things were Bikini armour with them!
Vast improvement when you look at that!  :P

ha! love the comic. "Wear the bikini - you're a mage." "Uh, in that case don't I have +5 to intelligence and why would I wear that?"

YES. she's just too marysue if i don't.

i purposely skip persuade checks she could pass, choose angry flashes of temper lines, etc. all to make the story feel like a real person is doing these things.

kyrie is very fire and ice: seems aloof, has a rare temper and an often-inappropriate sense of humor. LOVED telling the turian councilor to go to hell after virmire. i maintain that horizon was as much her fault as kaidan's, since she just choked on her "come with me" speech.

so yeah. actually, i found another rather flawed person who is an inspiration for her - sort of sums up a lot of kyrie.

Bah I really really hate missing persuade checks in games.  Buuut, along those lines I did miss one with Caroline: the last persuade check with Morinth.  And it felt right.  Shep's just too ridiculously perfect in-game, so awesome she can even resist being overpowered by an ardat yakshi.  Missing that last one at least made her seem a little more human, and drove home the fact she was actually in danger.  I imagine her later being very unsettled at momentarily being overpowered by Morinth.

Anyways.  I do like giving my femShep's flaws.  But they are mostly of the interpersonal variety and only show up in my out-of-game fics.

At least I'm not alone. Perhaps my favourite moment was lashing out at the LI during the Normandy lockdown in ME1, then apologising immediately after. One of the most humanising pieces of dialogue in the game.

:D i did that, too.

and agreed with the fanfics. ingame shep - esp. in me2 - is a little TOO perfect for my taste. in my head (and fanfic) my shep's calm on the outside, but inside has more temper, flavor, and a fouler mouth. it makes things more fun that way.:innocent:

What I meant by 'catsuits', was the outfits Miranda and Samara wears. That stuff doesn't look like armor at all. To be honest, I love my FemSheps in heavier armor... even my Adept. Yeah, there's the 'boob' armor. It doesn't bother me as much as skin-tight shiny pleather, though. :P

As for my FemSheps having flaws. Oh yes, big ones.

Holly is a bit self-righteous, Moira has a lot of trouble with personal interaction, Constance is a ruthless work-a-holic, Aislinn is overly-emotional with a temper, Trista suffers from hardcore survivor guilt, MacKenzie likes to sweep her problems under the rug and pretend they aren't there...

And that's just skimming the surface. XD

@Sage

Agreed, can't wait to play my Warrior FemHawke.    I always do warriors...

THAT is how I picture women's armor.  Right there.

I made it so that Kallen (in my headcanon fic of her) isn't as durable as she seems (Wrex had to carry her through the back half of virmire until the bomb part) she's a soldier so she has to rely on the immunity ability on her armorto get through long fights.
