Looking at DA2 romance scenes it seems Bioware are going backwards at the moment on them.

Well as long as there are some new romances in ME3. *cough* sniper  Image IPB

I think most people will want a well ended setting for ME3 with their LI's.  As much as Bioware now don't want it, they have created a Space Opera and they need to address that as paramount over combat aesthetics ect ect.

But what if I want both my awesome gameplay AND my space marine romance? Image IPB

Kaidan: Come on Shepard, let's find a bigger boot to kick Reaper a**.
Shepard: You say the sweetest things, Alenko.

I know, I know. I'm such a demanding fangirl.

I definitely want both as well.  Image IPB

We can only hope.

I didn't really get why people got so in to the romance side of things when I first played ME1. It was a nice addition but it didn't really mean much to me at the time. Now though I'll be very disapointed if Hrist doesn't get her happy ending with Liara.

I've become quite attached to the two of them being together, (even if they are just made up characters in a game) to the point where I can't even have another of my Shepard's romance Liara as it seems odd. After all they've both been through it would be a real slap to the face to have one or both of them die in the final part of the trology.

As for the DA2 romance scene's, I've only seen two of them. My ladyhawke got ninjamanced by Merril, (she was only trying to be nice to you, little Miss Elf! *Reload save*) and the Fenris scene. They seemed alright to me. Better than the ME2 romance scene's anyway, and there was no Cougar Hawke like we get when femshep talks to Jacob.

Yep I was nice to Merril even though she hates me.  Next thing I know shes under my sheets and Im thinking... "wait... how the hell did that happen.... need to break this off....  d'ahhh cant do it!!   Damn Merrill and her big emerald eyes!!"  :P

But yeah the romance thing I was never too into in my first play but subsequent playthroughs they became very important and almost staple as a core element.

Of course as Sage said were all very demanding and want everything!!  Bioware better deliver!! B)

Agree on DAO. I think DA2 does that better, but again: Only saw one scene.

Some of the facial expressions were just...eeeeee.  Mass Effect 1 was very tasteful.  What happened?!

Well, different engines. DAO had a long development time, maybe they couldn't do it any better back then.

What I've bothered to look I would say that DA2 and DAO romances scenes are from ... People are free to bash me for this but I think that KOTOR is head and shoulders above ME and DA when it comes to romances. No voyeurism but awesome dialogue that really shows how they feel, done in very classy way. It's not the engine. Everyone can show (naked) people hugging each others and call that love scene, romance or what ever. But without true emotion that's just sad, cheap and painful to watch.

I agree with you to a point.  As in real life, two clumps of pixels grinding on each other is a shallow experience without emotion and context.  I would disagree that ME/DA lack good emotional dialogue.  There's a ton of dialogue in Dragon Age.  Probably more than was in KotOR.  Liara, Kaidan, Ash, etc fans would probably also disagree with you that those romances lack emotion and depth.
Hey, I liked KotOR.  But calling Dragon Age and Mass Effect shallow romances is just false.  You don't just walk up to someone and say, "Hey, let's bang."

But we're talking about two different issues really.  The engine is important to the visual side of character interraction.  Facial expressions, gestures, movement are as important as dialogue, and these are determined in part by the engine and the people working with it.  In a love scene especially, as opposed to just talking to someone, when things are off it's creepy.  With games we're talking about a visual medium.  How it looks matters, up there with dialogue.  They are not mutually exclusive issues.

Not played KOTOR so cant comment there.   As ele said really its up to your imagination and im sure many of us have quite active imaginations at times!

Hey lets be fair, the romances have been really well scripted so far.  I cant ever imagine a scenario such as this:

[Actually will edit this. Although funny its not exactly safe for work ^_^]

But sometimes leaving the player to script their own sequence tells a better story then showing it.

Hmm...  A bit of a toughie, since her favorite gun, the Widow, only gets one shot.  Usually that's all she needs, but if she's pinned down...

I'm gonna go for... the Locust, with a Cryo Ammo upgrade.  'Cause few things are more fun than puching a frozen enemy to smithereens!

You should play KotOR then, it's really good.Image IPB Don't forget about Bastila Shan...
Oh, your Hawke romanced Merrill? She somewhat reminds me of Tali...(Yeah, my LadyHawke is just lovin' Fenris. Gonna have to play more for the Isabela and Merrill romances, though. so close to Isabela's..Heh, I love the characters in this game, same with Mass Effect characters...)

Er...that was a bit off topic, have a picture:

Edit: @AD
Hm...Lili would load it into her Mattock and shoot them in the face, or just charge them and forget the guns. Maybe her Locust, if she's pinned down.

*goes off to write fanfics and try to draw*

Kicking that merc out the window during Thane's recruitment, ahooting that merc during Samara's recruitment and shooting that fuel tank under that Kroigan during Mordins loyalty mission are all musts for even my paragon Sheps.  I  didn't shoot the hostage but otherwise I'm usually all about the renegade interupt when it comes to those I know I'm going to fight.  With my crew/squad or those I'm helping I'm generally paragon all the way.  With my 5 paragon play throughs I got a maxed out paragon bar but my renegade bar is filled up maybe a quarter or so due to all the renegade interupts.

I don't throw the merc out the window on Thane's recruitment, as I have to admire him standing up to Shepard. Nor can I roast the Krogan alive as I can see where he's coming from - stacks of stillborn babies are likely to make anyone a little unhinged.

OTOH, you reminded me of that merc leader on Miranda's loyalty mission. Don't care for bullies, so he gets his neck snapped

Back on point, the fact that FemShep has almost the exact same lines as MaleShep is great because unlike many other female characters, she's not written as a stereotypical woman, she's written as just a person. Being female is not her defining characteristic, being Shepard is. It makes her relateable and not just a token female. Whether this was the intention of the writers or just dumb luck that gave us a female protagonist in the vein of Ripley and Sarah Connor, it works.

Not to discount the differences between the genders, which there are many, or to make too fine a point of it but: FemShep may hold her own among the boys, but she is all woman to me.

Thank you, this comes a lot closer to expressing why I like her, and probably a lot closer to expressing the meaning of the article I referred to.

She would tell Mordin and Zaeed to use incineration blast and inferno grenade while she puts in the thermal clip in her Vindicator and proceeds to put survivors out of their misery via methodical, incendiary headshots.

Not the most effective tactic, sure, but she enjoys unleashing Hell.

Holly wouldn't get pinned down.  She can disappear with tactical cloak and move to a superior position.  That position would most likely be standing right next to you with a gun aimed at your temple.  She's also got her tech attacks to rely on.

If it came down to it, though, either a full Locust or Phalanx clip.  With Cryo Ammo.

She also tends to run around with the best assassin in the galaxy.  So if she doesn't sneak up on you, he will.

Which leads me to another question:

Who are your FemShep's favorite squadmates and how do you think they'd work well together?

I see Holly and Thane fighting as a team mid to close range, while Garrus hangs back and does what he does best.

I call mine "Team Headshot"  or "Team You'll Never See Us Coming"

Ah, biotics. Seeing Jack bowling husks is such a pleasant view.

I cracked up when Shepard told Miranda to slam one collector in a platform, and he rose up in the air as the platform kept moving under him, and nobody ever heard of the poor guy ever again.

She doesn't really have favorites in combat. She tries to take them in turns and learn what each one has to offer. I mean I know if it's likely that she'll find Geth for instance she should take someone who can overload, but she doesn't care. That said, back in the Normandy, Miranda and Garrus are the ones she cares about most.

On the other hand, she doesn't quite understand what Thane, Samara, and Grunt are doing there, or what they have to do with anything.

Lili likes taking Garrus and Tali together. She takes on enemies with brute force, Garrus hangs back and snipes 'em while Tali sends out her combat drone and shotguns enemies. She also likes the Kasumi Jack combo. Kasumi cloaks and kills, Jack and Lili use brute force, shotguns and biotics.

Garrus and Tali. They have history together and they balance out tech and combat (my canon Shep is a soldier). Also, Mordin and Grunt. They're almost polar opposites of each other in terms of personality and physical appearance, yet somehow it just works. Later in the game, Legion and Tali, because having two combat drones is just too irresistable.

I know it's borderline pervy to be looking in on Shep while she's changing, but I really like that image!  Like she's just out of the shower (or hell, maybe just walking around nekkid 'cause she can), without all her armor and everything and she's just...  human.  Just a person.

I agree, joking aside, nudity can say a lot of things without being prurient. It could convey that she has vulnerabilities like everyone else, or that she's alone in her cabin and is therefore going to do whatever is comfortable for once, or that she just wants to step completely out of her normally godlike persona for a while.

Depends.

Renée ran around with Garrus and Liara her first time through ME1.  That was a fun mixture.

In ME2, she's mostly had Garrus and Miranda running around with her.  The've been good help.

Nimue had either Kaidan and Ashley in ME1 (Dratted Bomb on Virmire!) or Garrus and Wrex.  ME2, she's had an assortment, although for some reason, I keep coming back to Garrus and Miranda. . .

Team Headshot, you say? Roger that.Garrus would be around if we could have 3 squadmates at a time instead of two. Then we'd have Thane and Garrus picking off the left overs while Legion and Artemis are reloading. It's only the Widow's low rate of fire that lets Garrus and Thane get any kills at all.
