I'm so glad to see that this thread is one of the most popular ones! I'm working on my second play-through as female Shepard and I honestly can't think of even playing as a male Shepard... seriously, she's just such a great character.
Also - woah - completely forgot Arrival came out today. I have something to look forward to this weekend, then!

A quick question as I'm popping in - what's the protocol for fanart/etc? I keep drawing silly little comics of my FemShep - not terribly good, mind you - so I don't know if they deserve a thread to themselves. Do people usually post their own threads, or keep it to the relevant character topic, or just leave it on DeviantArt instead? Sorry for the newbishness!

Anyway, to introduce myself a little, I might as well post a few screenshots... this is Delia Shepard :>

My problem was how cold the dialogue was about it throughout. "we must reactivate the project" nothing else matters blah blah ect ect.  She showed absolutely no emotion to the fact 300,000 people have died or were about too.

See, I think this is crap and the reason I won't be purchasing this thing.

My Shepard is a frackin Torfan vet and carries a hell of a lot of guilt over what happened there and over the deaths on both sides (batarian and human).

Given the situation shown in Arrival, her reaction to having to make this unfortunate but necessary decision is.....*shrugs* "Whatever"

Really?  :?

Shepard's been lobotomized.  I think, more accurately, it can be said that 'Shepard' is turning more and more into the emotionless space hero dude we see on the cover.  Fantastic.

Welcome. As far as I know fanart is welcome here. If you don't already, you should submit it to the thread's sister group on deviantArt FemShep on deviantArt

Tpu3x, love the expression captured in the 3rd screen, and also the fact that Shep punched the guard so hard his neck seems twisted far enough to snap.

Fffffffffff all these screenshots of Arrival are making it REALLY HARD to actually buckle down and do my Latin, damn it :P

YAY, this certainly is the best thread ever! Now if only I could change my avatar to a picture appropriately labeled DAT SMIRK. With FemShep wearing some shooped sunglasses, of course.

Like I said, I'm not very good, but I can at least toss up what I've got for the amusement of everyone. The curly hair is way fun to draw, at least to me, even if I go overboard with it occasionally. ^^

The scanner chewed on this one so it's fairly horrible, but it's some little doodles, two chibis especially. In my head Delia Shepard totally stuffed her hamster into one of the model starships and went around the ship zooming it along, quite possibly just to amuse/annoy Joker and distress Miranda.

In the 'omg, it almost looks like I know what I'm doing' category -

I didn't have much of a problem with the characterization in the DLC, but that's because it does apply to my FemShep. It's sad that there is really only one way to go through it and that is to shrug off 300,000 dead Batarians. Sheesh, BioWare must hate their race.

It's a shame you have to wear a helmet during the expanding explosion scene. It hides Shep's smile.

But what to do? Communications were down inside the station, the reapers were on the doorstep. And in the end there's no time left to save anyone on the planet. You can't just always win or save everyone.

Even if you could have warned them two hours earlier... evacuating the majority of all those people would have been impossible.

Yeah same here.  It helps Caroline tends to only be emotional in private.  I was surprised I picked all the renegade dialogues.  When it was a choice between warning the Batarians and calling the Normandy, I think she'd want to get the hell off that rock.  No time!  (Not that it mattered.)  I imagine she'd deal with the implications later.

Ditto on the Batarian hate.  They really don't want us to like them.  The only remotely positive portrayal of them is in the books...and even there, not so much.

I feel like im making a mountain out of a mole hill, but it really was a huge issue for me. I never felt so disconnected playing Amelia.

She showed no sort of emotional response to anything. Not once did she show one bit of remorse. There was nothing paragon at all in that DLC. No options, no interrupts. Its like they didnt exist. Im left with huge emotional blanks I want to write a fanfic on!! The linear plot was designed not to be happy or have a good outcome. Paragon players were therefore penalised as there is nothing good or just happening. The end scene had a chance to show a few sentences of regret or remorse or despair at what happened. How about anger at having being put in that situation! Imagine having a rant at Hackett for letting him put you in that situation, then to just yield, sit down and say "im sorry, its not your fault". Hackett then replies "Dont, I understand". Epic story telling to what should have been an emotionally charged end.

urghhh I hate creative writing because I suck at it!! But I feel so inclined to write an after scene because of this ill equipped DLC! Thats how frustrated I am!!

Arrival is complete. Now do I spend an hour typing up my thoughts on the last piece of story DLC for ME2, or do I let Hrist do the honours?

I think I'll go for the latter:

I can totally see your point.  Overall it seemed like they took the personal element out, which is not surprising for quick 560 point DLC.  There was hardly any dialogue, and you have no say in how the events played out.  It was pretty much, "This is what happened" and now you've seen it.  I guess this is setting up ME3, but it felt like an afterthought like they were going "Oh crap, we need to put out a DLC that explains this."  No where near the level of LotSB, but I hope it's because they are focused on ME3.

I enjoyed it well enough.  It wasn't spectacular, but I think it was still worth the money.

Sorry ele not suprising for 560 points? Overlord was the same price and got this

http://www.youtube.c...AQHUtwI#t=2m09s

Thats powerful and is deeply personal. Thats one persons soul. Not 300,000. This DLC is so inferior on everything.

Listen to that dialogue!  I mean just wow!!

What the hell Arrival!!  raghhh!!

Goodwood's summation of Arrival:

Positive:

1. The option to sneak through the first stage of the mission and avoid combat entirely. More plausible than gunning down a bunch of guards and less dumb than the arbitrary nature of a "forced stealth section."

2. The environments were pretty well-done. Hell, they should be -- plenty of elements were recycled from other locations (Tuchanka, Omega, even Overlord). Not to mention that Joker's one line of dialogue is ripped bloodily from the slack, vinegar-scented womb of the Derelict Reaper mission.

3. The tie-in to the third game, railroaded as it may be, is actually logical. If the ball isn't dropped, that is -- if not, then it'll give us Paragons the chance to start fresh by disavowing ourselves of Cerberus, et. al..

Negatives:

1. As others have noted, a complete and utter lack of emotional involvement. All Goodwood had going in that regard was an increasing sense of dread (the old aphorism of "I have a bad feeling about this..." applies here) as FemShep interacted with the good doctor and toured the base.

2. The "waves of enemies" section was overblown and quite unnecessary if the end result is Shepard getting knocked out and put under regardless of whether or not she kills every indoctrinated motherf**ker in the room.

3. Replayability is a b**ch if the Arrival DLC itself unlocks right after Horizon (unless Goodwood is mistaken). So basically, Shepard has to go stop the Reapers' invasion before she's even sent the Collectors to another dimension? What gives, BioWare?!

4. Though the environments were fairly unique, the levels were too small and linear (with the exception of the very first section, that is). The DLC itself was also too short, and though the interaction with this other Reaper was better than the taunting jeers of Harbinger, the conversation itself was also too short and lacked any real meaning (a poor dev's Sovereign, if you will).

5. WHAT THE KRIFF HAPPENED TO THE WEIGHT OF DECIDING THE FATE OF THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND SENTIENT BEINGS, YOU KNUCKLEHEADS?!?!?

Sorry Crash [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/sad.png[/smilie]

I have low standards.

It is an interesting point though, clearly 1 life <<< 300,000 lives, yet it doesn't have the same impact unless you see it with your own eyes.  Overlord was shocking the first time I played it.
300,000 dead Batarians?  It's hard to put a face to a number like that. Which is maybe your point? Arrival just kind of glossed over it.

Bahhh, am I a horrible person?

"One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic."  - Joseph Stalin

Of all people to say that huh!  Putting a face on what happend was always impossible to do. Thats why Overlord would always succeed.   I just cant bare the fact Amelia was so cold to what happened.  There lies my issue and it deeply hurts.

Additionally if shes like this for Arrival what hope is there for the invasion of Earth?  I think im getting carried away because of a poor VA budget though...

Dont worry, Ele, I know you didnt mean that and I know your always full of good intentions.  Your a lovely person and I would give you a big hug right now if I could! ^_^

It does seem that there are some inconsistencies between how life is viewed in the universe. I realize a lot of it is to emphasize the paragon/renegade split, but the general outlook is interesting to me. On one hand we have the sympathy for David in the Overlord DLC, or even the sympathy for the geth in the paragon version of Legion's loyalty mission. Shepard expresses sympathy for the collectors, even, at one point, asking if there was anything that could be done to reverse the genetic modification... it does seem rather out of character for her to just shrug off killing so many aliens. Not that I've played the DLC yet. But it does seem like an opportune place for a paragon comment along the lines of "Oh no, what can I do?", even if the answer is "nothing", or an emphatic "hell naw!" from more ruthless members of the team. Otherwise it seems a little like Shepard's been hanging around Cerberus too long.

Though now I'm getting worried that the divide between paragon and renegade will just end up getting too big to fit in the same game for ME3...

I do wish that perhaps there will be a small bit of reaction on Shepard's part in ME3. She seems very much like a woman who does her crying in private. Not that male Shepard doesn't do the same - to be honest, I will be royally p*ssed if only femShep got a scene of quiet sad reflection, because it will just reinforce that old trope of 'women are emotional and men are emotionless', and from a feminist point of view I am so glad that they have avoided these pitfalls so far.

Perhaps it's just because I've been thinking about Shepard's mindset for fanfiction lately (a shameless, horrible crossover, lol), but now that I'm rambling, I really think it will be important to give her a space to mourn at some point. She won't be caught dead crying in front of her crew, but at some point it's got to start to bother her, as we hurtle towards the conclusion and it all begins to add up. I especially wonder if Shepard will start to worry about her role as soldier - what happens when peace-time happens? Is there such a thing as a peaceful Shepard, or is her interaction going to be boiled down to shooting things and killing? It's a bit like Garrus' romance scene - I'd like to see her at some point want one good thing to hold on to.

Again, not that this is a female Shepard problem alone, but I really want it to be addressed for FemShep's story. MaleShep has an easy out with a love interest, and then we lean on that trope of feminine emotions 'rescuing' and 'taming' an aggressive man. Yada yada yada. But with FemShep we have that dynamic of woman as nourisher, woman as mother, etc... Will she have to save herself? If so, how? She needs a moment of humanity so she won't be assumed to be a cheerful psychopath (unless you want to play her that way, of course).

...what was I saying? Oooerr... *ahem* Sorry. I'll go back to playing ME2 now, lol!
