That would be pretty goddamn hilarious, I think. Bioware would get so much crap for it too.

:D Thanks everyone for answering the karaoke question!

I was actually thinking of some Fleetwood Mac, so I am tickled by that - maybe it's because Stevie Nick's voice reminds me a little of FemShep's?

Yeah, it does for me. I wonder if we can petition Bioware to have Shepard sing in ME3, or an ME3 DLC....ok maybe that wouldn't actually be a good idea.

I decided to try some digital drawing for the first time. I've done a fair amount of pencil/pen stuff, but dang using a computer is a whole different animal. Not totally happy with it and it looks funny to me unless viewed at full size, but I can't work on it any longer .   What do you guys think?

Not... Happy??? That looks great!

@aimless: Nice drawing. I think it needs something behind Shepard though. The white is a little off putting, in my opinion.

I'll be keeping an eye out in my current playthrough for what kind of environment theme would work there. Thinking maybe something Omega-ish.

EA has a long history of shooting themselves in the foot, making bad decision after bad decision including the idiotic business strategy of releasing the same game with minor tweaks year after year. Goodwood thinks that ME2 and DA2 likely suffered from poor choices forced upon BioWare by EA, possibly including such things as the romance scenes...

Well you could always get him the 360 version. Then he can comment; "Microsoft?  Don't they only make Halo games?":P

I would just like to comment that after my ME1 and ME2 runthroughs with a Paragon and Renegade FemShep in both games, I can't stand ManShep anymore. FemShep's VA is SO much better than ManShep's...

femShep sings ... sort of.

Ashley is on backup ... sort of.

Jennifer Hale is Thorn. I can't remember which one Kimberly Brooks plays. I think she's the drummer.

I just had this same experience.

I was trying to think of what parts of the game I hadn't seen, and tried to create a ManShep. ...by the time I got to inputting the name, he was dubbed 'Buttface'. I just can't do it. FemShep has SO much more personality.

Tell me about it.  I actually tried a manShep quite a while back.  Started back in ME1 was going to romance Ashley and I even tried to mentally block out ManShep's voice and couldn't do it.  I know Mark Meer is a very talented VA, (Biotic God, Werewolves in DA:O), but I swear 30 hours of manShep has got to be against some Amnesty International treaty.

DudeShep sounds like he's got a really really bad head cold, permanent sinus issues, or both. Goodwood tried at least thrice to do DudeShep runthroughs, but couldn't get much past Spectre induction with any of them, the voice was so bad.

Of course, following his policy of always playing gender-optional games as a woman for the first run through the single-player campaign, Goodwood's first ME character was female. So there might have already been some inborn bias against anyone who wasn't Jen Hale...

hmm, I like dude shep, I feel like some of the lines he delivers better, some of the lines may be worse and some just have a different emotion behind them. Femshep, being female protagonist is just easier to identify with for me.

Though one thing for me femshep is a clear winner on? is that smirk :)

I tried making a maleShep recently as well, and it just didn't take. To start off, the face-creator seems to have less flexibility on the male side, or I at least found myself getting annoyed by its limitations. When I finally made something I thought I could live with, I went into the game...

As soon as he spoke, I cringed. The voice just didn't fit the Shep I'd built at all... Kind of like how I can't build a radically different femShep anymore, because the voice just doesn't seem right to me on a different face, but, you know, without having formerly invested time and effort into a particular maleShep character.

It just didn't fit.

Now, when I first ever played Mass Effect (this past December ^^;;; ), I did in fact start off with the default Earthborn/Sole-survivor Sheploo. I actually played about half the game, and was really enjoying the story but not really getting into the character. I went back to the very beginning and spent some time making a custom femShep (the original Artemis, who is in my profile photo), and played the game with her. Aside from finally finishing the Sheploo playthrough to import maleShep into ME2 (of which I once started a play-through but have never completed; femShep has at least 8 completed playthroughs), I have played exclusively with femShep.

In fact, until recently, exclusively with infiltrator/colonist/sole-survivor femShep, as I'd had so much discomfort trying to make different femSheps whose faces no longer fit the voice. Now that I can effectively duplicate my femShep, I can finally branch out into other classes. Which means many more playthroughs of both ME1 and ME2 (and eventually ME3, I'm sure) with femSheps.

Meanwhile, I'm sure maleShep is off crying lonely, bitter tears into a pillow somewhere.

It's too bad he can't handle the awesome.

i thought that, too. tiny shep, yet hugely defiant. i went for all out renegade lines at the end of Arrival and loved every one of them. kyrie may make paragon decisions 80% of the time, but her mouth tends to run away with her.

Except that's not a Vanguard charging a Reaper, it's a Mantis gunship.

BTW Goodwood concurs with Sinapus, that is indeed an epic picture and he wishes it was big enough to use as a wallpaper.

@ AD - you're right, my bad.

also, re: dudeshep, no knocking the guy. he has a right to be shepard for someone other than me. :)

actually, i think in every BW game ever, I played a woman - i am female, so i like to see girls kick a**. just way more interesting imo and we need more action heroes as role models. not that disney princesses aren't great and all. just, more mulan and less snow white, please.

anyhow, i think the only BW game -or any game really - that i willing chose to play as a man and liked it better than the fem version was jade empire. i think it was because the entire dawn star subplot made little to no sense with a fem-student, imo, but male-student it really worked. and the monk avatar was hot.

but all things considered, femshep is my favorite VG character ever, and i can't imagine shepard being other than female.

and speaking of BW games, while waiting for DA2 to drop in price, i decided to play baldur's gate. never played it before (so no spoilers, please!) so far, really liking it. old-school graphics ftw!

My brother actually asked me to design a Shep for him a long time ago. As much as I tried to convince him, he didn't want a FemShep. He never actually got around to playing the game much, so now I have this inherited DudeShep I don't necessarily want to delete, but can't play because male characters just aren't for me (though I thought it might be intriguing to see some of the male romances).

I find it funny, since he's always talking about how much he likes my FemSheps, especially Moira and Constance... but he won't actually play one. :P

It's strange. I actually like maleShep in the promotional content, like the official game trailers. They did convince me to buy the game (well, they helped in convincing me). He works really well in the quick-cut bits of trailers.

I just don't like playing him in game. I don't hate him, by any means. He just doesn't do anything for me as a character. I am not inherently biased against male characters or for female characters. If the character him/herself is well designed, then the gender is just part of that. I find the Master Chief, the original protagonist in Marathon, the "you" characters in Bioshock games, etc. to be perfectly fine and enjoyable characters to play. On the other hand, I find Lara Croft, femShep, BladeKitten, Lilith (in Borderlands) etc. to also be fine and enjoyable characters to play.

Now, I've not been much of an RPGer, so I don't have as much experience in building characters in that respect. Mass Effect is probably the furthest I've forayed into RPG style. In this style, I may have some bias towards choosing a female character, when given such freedom to choose, but I like to think I also give male characters a fair chance. And in Mass Effect, femShep just fits makes the story so much better.

(notice the edit - I feel that having a female lead here makes the story more compelling; that coupled with Jennifer Hale's excellent voice acting to help build such a strong character makes femShep my favorite choice)

IMHO, YMMV, void where prohibited by law, may cause dizziness and nausea, use only as directed, apply directly to forehead, not to be taken internally, consult your physician.

----------
(disclaimer: I am a male, and I don't deny the fact that I also like a strong, attractive female character just on the virtue of being a strong and attractive female. However, I do insist that I care more about characters fitting the story than just having some eye-candy to run around the screen; obviously when I get both good characterization and good eye-candy, I'm thrilled ;) )

Hm, I don't consider Meer's MaleShep voice to be horrible, but I do like Hale's FemShep voice better. First ME1 game was a custom MaleShep infiltrator and it worked out fine. After I finish Abigail the Adept and Edward the Engineer (who is Aislinn's fault because of her Tank! video) I'll probably start a MaleShep Sentinel named Galen (the techno-magebiotic) and see how that goes. Then Ellen "Elf" the Soldier to unlock the assault rifle achievement and I'll have to see what else to try for ME1, or start moving the massive amount of Sheps through ME2 in preparation for ME3.

Though Goodwood would use different examples in other games (one being female Jaden Korr in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy), he agrees with and supports Interactive Civilian's points here.

Well, Goodwood's gaming list doesn't include a lot of mainstream games; in point of fact, he hasn't played any of the games whose protagonists you listed, hence the differing examples. He thinks that both gender options in the original Star Trek: Elite Force game were fine, and understood the developers' choice to go with a male Alex Munro for the sequel and instead of making gender a choice, making the love interest a choice. His rule of "female first" is one he picked up from a college friend.

If only more games gave the player a choice of gender...

RE: dude shep. as I've stated many a tie I like Mark Meer and Jen Hale's VA's and performances equally. I just find it easier to make female characters since it's a rarity in most games. Ic an't in good concious play a male shep as a soldier since it's been done since, forever, but as the 5 other classes I can since it has an edge to it. I can play femshep as a soldier anyday, (since my canon is a soldier first) because you don't get to see female soldiers often. Bioware does a good job of lett you form your character the way you want msot times that I can just whip up a new character and run them through both games and it feel fresh even though I know exactly what's going to happen. andit's also fun writing headcanon fics...XD
