I'd like to do another blog post on the site, detailing why femshep is so popular and why she works so well as a female action hero. Basically that she works so well in spite of BW, rather than because of them. Because she shares the same dialogue w/ manShep is partly the reason of her success. Thoughts?

Agreed.  She's not treated as a "female version of Shepard".  She is Shepard.  It's only a scant few instances where her gender is even acknowledged, which I think makes for an excellent female protagonist.

I'm not willing to concede that FemShep's awesomeness is "in spite of Bioware." I think Bioware has got to have been consciously writing a character who didn't have too many gender tells; otherwise it wouldn't read as smoothly. Giving the different Shepards different LIs actually seems to help with this -  she gets a lot of development through those interactions, and that tends to be where she veers strongly away from the male version. The LIs are where they store the more strongly gendered dialogue - if I had accidentally stumbled onto the Miranda romance dialogues on my femshep, I would have felt the immersion breaking.

You can't just take any good male character, give all his lines to a girl, and have her sound realistic. Gender does have some influence on character traits, but they only let those traits creep in subtly, during some of the love interest dialogues (and not all of them - there are some relationships I think would sound natural with either gender). Since these tells show up in some of the love interest scripts, but are absent from the rest of the game, I think that Bioware is consciously keeping that kind of "gender tell" out of their main characterization. Does this make any sense?

Maybe we can agree that FemShep's awesomeness is partially based on the fact that they don't have to market her to the least common denominator? I think that's more accurate than to say she's doing it in spite of Bioware's writing efforts.

You make a good point.  Kaidan, Liara, Thane and Garrus are all well done romance from femshep's perspective.  The Jacob romance, while it has some good points about it, seems to be the exception to the rule.  I'll have to process this and see what happens.  Thanks.

I know I haven't really stopped playing ME since I got it a year ago. After probably way too many playthroughs of both games, I'm still finding random stuff I hadn't noticed/heard before.

Nonsense.  Don't you know that's how Ellen Ripley came into existence?  ;)

Note I said you can't just do it with just any good character. You can obviously do it with some. Heck, in my writing groups, when guys complain that they can't write women I say "Put all your male characters into a hat. Pick one. Make it a girl. Read through and take out anything that sounds horribly out of character. If a line only sounds slightly out of character, leave it. Now you have a female character. Congratulations!"

We used to do this with Shakespeare, because in school the number of actors qualified to do Shakespeare does not line up well with the ratio of good gender roles in Shakespeare. A great way to update some of the comedies is to cast all the gender-dependent central roles and then just assign the remaining parts to the best actors you have left over. We had a Much Ado About Nothing where Balthasar (the world-wise bard) was a female character - so she was basically the female friend that all the dudes go to for love advice. It added a really interesting dynamic to the whole thing. You can't make Benedict a woman randomly, though, because then the central dramatic turn of the plot doesn't make sense.

I do think a lot of media would be more interesting if it were run through the "can we make this main character a woman?" meat grinder.

Being the "good gal"  aint easy but it'll be worth it I think.  By the end of ME3 and we're standing atop a Reaper corpse.... it'll be awesome.

@F1r3storm -- Those photos look great. Nothing seems to be lost in translation between the console and PC version!

@FemShep.com -- I am loving the photo upload feature on the site. I spent my evening just grinning at all the fantastic FemSheps and the ability to leave comments on individual ones. I didn't realize I was spamming the front of the site with all my "likes," doh, sorry. =p (I was eating dinner at my desk and just going through everything in one sitting!)

Edit: Oh, I found the option to turn off my "likes" notification so I don't have to spam the front page anymore, woo!

@Jamie and Ryn

Poor Holly hesitated, too. I did do the prompt for the trailer I worked on, though. So I could get the shot of Kenson's hand.

That particular scene doesn't end much better for Renegade Shep either.

*BAM* And about .3 seconds to realize it was a dead man's switch before everything explodes.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else sit and watch the countdown for 28 minutes and see the almost seizure inducing Reaper invasion?

I'm getting some Sheps through ME1 before playing ME2 again. So I don't have to relearn the controls and end up hitting the squad HUD button when I want to sprint and vice versa. Or keep hitting "E" when I want to talk to someone or activate something and end up telling a squad member to move somewhere I don't want them to go.

@Jamie- Kallen got the same thing, and she shot Kenson. She did the interupt before I even pulled the trigger on my controller. She knows me so well. xD

So I've gotten started in on sorting through all the stuff for the femshep vid. Thanks to everyone who sent me stuff and thanks for the encouragement generally. Wow, this is going to take me a while. But thanks to folks and ELE's help re: gibbed, I am on my way.

Question:

Are there any femshep lines and/or moments that strike you as quite iconic? That is, not just your femshep, per se, but lines that really sum up for you who femshep is and what she's about?

I frapsed a few of my favorites, but I want to hear what other folks think.

"I sacrificed hundreds of human lives to save the Destiny Ascension. I unleashed the Rachni upon the galaxy. So I hope your escape plan doesn't depend on me hesitating to shoot a hostage, Vasir." -or similar.

Probably on your list, so I'll suggest the "conversation" with the Vorcha on Omega. "...nice talking to you!"

304942.

When Shepard sees that number and has a look of sheer horror about what she's about to do, but she stil shakes herself out of it and does the only thing that can be done.

That scene, in my opinion, summarizes Shepard, regardless of gender, class, and alignment.

Hmmm, here are the moments I always think of.

In ME1:

- The scene where Shepard walks up to the Normandy bridge for the first time.
- Talking with Vigil on Ilos.
- Telling Harkin not to call her Princess.
- Fighting Saren on Virmire
- Driving the Mako through the Conduit
- Stopped in the elevator in the Citadel "We're going outside!"
Then shoots out the glass, followed by sweeping shot that looks down towards Sovereign.
- FemShep limping out of the wreckage with a huge grin on her face at the end.

ME2:

- The rebirth of the Normandy
- Shepard walking onto the new Normandy for the first time
- Beginning of Suicide Mission, where Shepard strikes a post in front of the Normandy with squad.
- Saving a squadmate from falling off the platform during the SM.
- Leaping in slow motion to the Normandy on the SM.
- Shepard's confrontation with Vasir (with hostage) and Shadow Broker in LotSB

I'm sure there's more I haven't thought up, but I'm sleepy. I'm also just posting things in a general sense that aren't particularly Renegade or Paragon, but still iconic for both.

The paragon option when talking to Kalisah al-Jilani in ME2 (when she asks Shepard about sacrificing human lives to save the council, and Shepard lists off the name of every human ship that was destroyed).  Shows you how serious she is.

I think most of the important/dramatic scenes from the game are well identified, but little strikes me as universally iconic. Different moments are important for different characters for different reasons. And yes, this is a wholly unhelpful response ;)
