Personal stuff
Romance: In ME1 April romanced both Kaidan and Liara and genuinely cared for both, but ultimately chose Kaidan. As She and Kaidan were both Sentinels and she needed Ashley, April left Kaidan behind to die. In ME2 she had not planned on romancing anyone, but chose to blow off steam w/ Garrus.
Why Shepard and her LI such a great match: April has rather strong commitment issues and so it was quite a surprise when she fell hard for both Liara and Kaidan. Ultinately, she chose Kaidan as she hypothesized her affections for Liara were a result of the asari mind meld. Though she chose Kaidan, the relationship came to a tragic end on Virmire when she left him behind. Shepard and Liara remained close friends. After Kaidan’s death, April swore she would never love again. She didn’t ever want to get hurt like that again, but she ultimately realized that was a cowardly attitude and that she needed to move on, though she never would love another like Kaidan. April did flirt w/ Kelly and the two had a “date.” It was during the date that she discovered the pleasures of being w/ another woman. However, April was ultimately drawn to Garrus as the two were both loners and had seen so much death and destruction together. So, the two “blew off steam” right before the mission. Whether or not there is more to the relationship than mutual respect and sex remains to be seen.

Best Friends: Garrus, Tali, Liara, Samara.
History and Personality: Raised as a military brat, April kept to herself most of the time. Her childhood was fairly stable, though the constant moving from ship to ship did made April somewhat detached. She did not make friends easily. She excelled in the tech abilities and was trained to use her biotics by the Alliance ascension program. Both abilities made her a formidable soldier and so she enlisted as soon as she was of age. Her abilities were a major factor in taking a stand on Elysium. While others died around her, she held the line until help arrived. Shortly after the events of Elysium, her father, Robert Ryan Shepard, was killed in an Alliance training exercise. April worshipped her father, though they disagreed with his slightly xenophobic stance. His father had been killed in the first contact war. After her father’s death, April did not dwell on the tragedy, but instead focused on her career. Her mother, Hannah Shepard, while proud of her daughter’s accomplishments, never doted on April and was almost always away on mission. Still, the two tried to maintain a mother/daughter relationship via email and vid messages.
As a Commander April is quite personable and pleasant, but ultimately keeps things on a very professional level. The events of Eden Prime and the mission to stop Saren taxed her resolve, especially Virmire where she left the man she loved to die. She had started the mission wary of the danger, yet optimistic. As the mission drew to a close, her actions became more restless and desperate. Nothing in her life had prepared her for the Saren mission and it took its toll on her moral. Still, she soldiered on, but her faith in the way of things shook at the foundation.
Three fun facts:
1) April is bisexual.
2) As a girl April had a talent for abstract art, especially sculptures. She still likes to peruse the occasional art gallery when she gets a chance.
3) The name “April Ryan” is taken from the 1999 video game, The Longest Journey.
