Anyway, in my pre-coffee haze I may have actually hit on an interesting question, so here goes:

Why do people call your FemShep, well, Shepard?

Is it out of military necessity, and she actually prefers another name with friends and family?
Has she just sort of gotten used to being called Shepard?
Is it because she has an embarrassing first name? Why's it embarrassing to her?

For my FemShep, it's because her spacer mother has genealogy as a hobby and had collected a good half-dozen first names and tacked on a few more for good measure along the way. During a rebellious streak in her teens she started cycling through them all - even "Daisy" and "Boudicca" - so the only name that was sure to refer to her accurately was, well, "Shepard", and it stuck.

For Jennifer, it's simply because of military necessity and respect. Many of the people on the normandy don't even know Jennifer's first name, she's just...Commander Shepard to them.

Anderson does it becuase she's a soldier, and Kaidan only calls her Shepard when they're not alone.

Because only her close friends get to call her Kallen. She'll shove a gun in your face if you are unworthy to say the K word.

Alice gets called Shepard by her crew mostly out of military habit.  They see the name, the title, the history.  It's one of the things she's come to accept, but it's still a reminder of what she doesn't like about the military (stripping someone of their individuality 'for the greater good').  The people from her childhood call her 'Ali' or 'Ali-cat', but she rarely ever sees those people anymore.  Liara calls her 'Alice' when they're alone together, but 'Shepard' when there's a need for Alice to be in charge.  It's one of the things she appreciates about Liara, that she can see past the rank and see her.

The only people that call Kate by her first name are Kaidan and Dr. Chakwas, in private. In public everyone uses Shepard mostly because of Military necessity.

For my spacer Kerrigan, Shepard seems a completely normal form of address for anyone not in her immediate circle of friends. In her cultural background, it is considered rude for anyone not family or a close social intimate to use a given name. If a stranger to said, "So, do you prefer Kerrigan or Kerri?", she would turn on her heel and walk away. She is a Paragon, so she would not smack them for their rudeness,

Hrist has people refer to her as Shepard, for military reasons and because that's what she's grown acustomed to people calling her. Since she has an unusual name, (she's named after a Valkyrie from Norse mythology) she got tired of being asked the same questions about it when she was younger, so just started refering to herself by her surname. The only person who calls her Hrist, is Liara, and she only calls her that in private.

The only people that call Sarah by name is Kaidan, Liara and Dr.Chakwas and at few times also Joker, they see through the Commander and see the person behind. Sarah has gotten used to be called Commander or Shepard and got no problem with it. It's how the majority know her and only those who're close to her sometimes call her Sarah or as Joker sometimes do call her 'Rah

re: why do people call shepard 'shepard'?  for me, i made it part of the colonist background thing. being the last one left of your family makes shep want to carry on the family name.

voted. honestly, this is a change/addition that would not affect me much. i get a strong 'little sis' vibe from tali, so i have a hard time seeing her as a romance option. but then, i got a similar vibe from liara and a 'kid brother' vibe from garrus and a 'brother-in-arms only' vibe from jacob, so i have a really hard time making romances for those characters as a result. this is probably all just in my head, but it's hard for me to get past it. at this point, the only romance i could really see myself making a femshep for is thane, and that's entirely aislinn's fault for lending me holly's romance save. i was quite charmed (though kyrie will forever be kaidan-loyal).

ha! nice. and wow, s/s romances finally. i'm going to assume kaidan and ashley are probably the ones they're referring to. you'd have to be pretty deliberate to have them though, since as you'd need a full me1 to me2 to me3 import for the same-sex VS to be there at all. if bioware does that, then good on them, i say. for my head-canon, kaidan has eyes for no one but femshep, but i have never understood why people get up in arms about a character crushing in a different way in another person's game. that's the whole point of RPGs, imo.

Actually, it makes me very happy that you enjoyed their romance.  Which is why I support Thane and only ask that people give it a try.  A few other people have tried it out, due to my incessant fangirling, and enjoyed it.

The same with me and Jacob. seriously, Jacob is the man and he deserves some femshep loving.(now mle shep loving if he's bi in ME3)

I did Thane's romance on one of my playthroughs.  I wanted the achievement, and I view Garrus as more of a buddy than a romantic partner.  I thought it was a really nice story.  I still prefer the Kaidan romance (not saying it's better, mind you, just my preference) but there was a lot to like about Thane.

I still can't get over it when my husband does the Tali thing (which is rare, he tends to stick with Liara).  She's such a kid sister, it seems weird.  It's cute, though.

I'm happy to try different romance options, as long as they are all done well.  It doesn't really bug me to have other options in the game.  I handled the Liara thing, after all.  ME1 Liara was so not my type.  I enjoyed the game anyways.

It takes something special to make me interested in the ME2 romances but a certain video and some great pictures and it had to be some indoctrination in there and after that i got my romance with Thane and he's awesome:D Aislinn got by far more indoctrination powers then the Reapers
