The poll might as well be asking whether you are a male or a female. It's only natural that ManShep wins because the greater majority of players ARE males.

well, i am male and I voted FemShep!

Anyhow, i made these yesterday for the Motivationals thread and I thought I should bring my support over here:

oh dear. now look what i started. i suppose she's expecting her hair to work as her armor? and a crossbow? really?

yeah, that is NOT what we want when we want more femshep. femshep truly breaks the mold by not being THAT. sorta sad, really, that femshep is the exception in sci-fi and barbarella there is the rule.

I voted Femshep too. I tend to make more femsheps than Male Sheps (though all but two are in the graveyard and you're all familiar with one of themPosted Image)

yay for guys playing as femshep. much as i love felicia day and the guild and all, i have to admit that one episode with the axis of anarchy, with the guy who played only female characters sort of bugged me. i was like, 'aw, come ON, felicia! the guys i know who play only female characters are not closet gay." that's just such a lame stereotype. the guys i know who play female only characters are completely normal (well, video-gaming obsession aside) and they just happen to like to see women kick ass. they find it more interesting than the traditional muscle-bound male heroes. a pity that playing as a woman has gotten such a weird stigma, that even ms. day fell into it.

I do play both (or played) but to be honest it's pretty much femShep all the time for me now and I'm a male (250% straight). FemShep just happens to be my main Shep. It not me anyway, it's commander Shepard, her story.

It's very game dependant. In KOTOR, for example, my Raven is male, femRaven just didn't feel like the Raven.

I wasn't aware of the 'gay male playing female characters' stereotype. All the gay guys I know play as men 'cause they're 'prettier to look at'.

As for me, I play a mix of male and female protagonists. I had one of each at the level cap in WoW, with a pretty even split for the rest of my non-capped toons. When Mass Effect came around I just had zero interest in playing a male Shepard, and I couldn't tell you exactly why. Maybe it's just that I was tired of seeing the same archetypical male in every shooter out there, and wanted something different. Maybe I just liked the idea of a strong female lead and wanted to see where they went with it. Either way I'm glad I decided as I did. It's been an amazing experience. I've never been this invested in a character before, and I don't know that I would have gotten the same way had I been playing a manShep. Maybe that's because she's a woman, and there's that disconnect between our genders. With a guy I could have simply played 'me' and how 'I' would handle things, but because she was a woman, she developed into her own person. I found myself playing the second time through thinking "What would Alice do?" instead of listening to what I'd think/do. That's not to say that bits of my personality don't influence who she is and how she handles things, but she's definitely not me by any stretch of the imagination. I guess I sort of see her as the kind of woman I'd want my (hypothetical) daughter to grow up to become.

I'm male and i tried FemShep first and i've never looked back and i just enjoy taking her story forward. I just prefer FemShep by far over MaleShep. Seeing a woman kick some ass is more interesting then just another man with a little too much muscles.

Pretty much this.

Also the fact that Shepard has voice actors, takes away the last bit of immersion for that character being "me" so I'm just kind of guiding the main character in this interactive story. Hmm, maybe that's the reason I broke my streak of male characters in DA2(played ME1&ME2 after DA2) while previously playing males in WoW, Warhammer, DA:O etc.

I was laughing my ass off when my femshep punched that crazy doc at Eden Prime while if I had played male shep at the time I would have thought "why the hell you did that?". Can't really explain why but that's just the way it is.

I personally just like making female RPG characters way more than making male characters, I started making the change after Bethesda's Oblivion. That FemShep happens to be really cool and unique is just a great bonus on top of that. I think everyone notices a really good female custom character, because it's easy to make some stereotypical action hero with short hair and stubble, but way harder to get a good looking female character.

@ ad: totally agree on the custom fem char thing. it's HARD to create a good custom female action hero. on the one hand, you want her to look attractive. but traditionally, attractive for women = features that imply delicacy and helplessness (big eyes (more childlike), small feet and hands, slim, sloping shoulders, fine bone structure, smooth skin, etc.) - it's all stuff that implies they're healthy, protected, pampered, etc. but our stereotypes of what is "strong" is often quite male/masculine. so trying to make a female hero look both strong AND attractive, or finding the ideal balance in between is dang hard. i think that's why femsheps are repeatedly lower ranked than malesheps on mass effect 2 faces.com, for example. some folks only like 'hot' girls (think very feminine) and others only like 'tough' ones.

eh, my 2 cents anyhow. it took me a long while before i could make a shep that hit the balance i was looking for, and after seeing so many custom sheps, i've really come to appreciate the range of beauty vs. tough-looking in femsheps. but again, it's a really personal thing and given stereotypes, i think a lot of people just can't get over the hero of the galaxy having curves.

I must agree.  I am Male (and a straight on at that ), and I love playing as FemShep!  I played as FemShep the first time out with ME and have never looked back. I got my first exposure to ME at a friends place 3 days after it's release. I was NOT a gamer (never really was)...but ME and FemShep (the Character I randomly chose) blew me away, enough to go out and buy it (the first I ever bought myself) the very next day.   I was hooked...and started creating my first and only canon character...Madeline.

I have since played as MaleShep and I gotta say....just doesn't work for me.  Being a guy, I do like a classic Male "hero": Your John McClane, your Martin Riggs, your James T. Kirk, etc...and I do like a good Female "hero" as well: Your Ellen Ripley, Your Sarah Connor just to name a few.  It is also hard to find a female "hero" that actually works and isn't rediculously "stereotyped"....we all know the type :D

Femshep embodies perfection in this area, among countless others with a realisum and feeling that dudeshep doesn't capture for me....that is why I like her

...and she is certainly nice to look at    what can I say...I'm a guy :D

If you havent voted yet make sure you do!!  Femshep just surpassed 6000 votes! yay.

Out of the 17,000 votes cast   (a little more then Angry's Poll on here isnt it!)  it still comes to the 34% from earlier.   Looks like we have our magic number.

So yes one third of the audience asked prefers femshep!  :)   I think thats a significant statistic.  Its certainly a large enough figure for Bioware to be correct in there latest tweets to market to this audience more.

Things are lookinng brighter and brighter!  Going to need some sunglasses!  B)

Before Mass Effect I would, 99% of the time make a male character in a game, given the choice. But I think I've just become bored of playing the same type of character over and over. FemShep was completely different. I instantly found her more interesting than maleshep and I'm now so used to Shepard being female, that I have no interest in playing with a male Shepard anymore.

I have also never created a backstory or personality for a character in a game prior to FemShep. Usually because in the games I played, the characters were either pre-defined, or just a silent, expressionless avatar that I had no attachment to. Shepard was different and I actually wanted her to have her own history and personality, especially after I started visiting this thread. It was more fun to go through the game thinking, what would Hrist do? And not what do I want to do? I doubt I would have ever done that with a male Shepard.

I'm also a straight male and the whole, 'guys who play as a female must be gay' argument doesnt make any sense to me. If I play a game with a big muscle bound bloke, I'm straight, but If I play a game with a female character that I find attractive, I'm gay? The logic in that doesn't add up I'm afraid. And I'm not saying males who play games with a male character are gay either, before someone takes that route.

And to chance subject briefly. I made a final wallpaper for my 'FemShep class Wallpaper' project. It's a sort of cover image, for the whole thing, staring all six Shepards.

Stigmas are funny. If I were to say that playing w/ a G I Joe (Real American Hero) makes a guy gay, then people would either rage, laugh their a** off or just do a wtf? Today, G I Joe is the epitome of macho, but, when the G I Joe was introduced in 1964 there was an actual fear that it would make boys gay because the G I Joe was a "doll," a girl's toy. Hasbro marketed Joe as an action figure, but some parents still saw him as a “doll.” That was today’s historical moment.

Anyway, I like playing Shepard as a character, not myself. As TheMarshal said, there is a certain disconnect playing the opposite gender that allows me to explore the character more broadly than I would if I were playing a guy. That and “hot chick running around kicking butt.”

@Sage. UJ was my first Shepard, but it’s taken a long time to really get her just right. I agree w/ the balance issue.

Yeah, well, the idea that men who prefer to play as attractive females in games were gay, was started and carried by 75% of gaming's main audience...that is to say 14-17 year old boys. Talk about the art of trolling.

Nah, its a load of rubbish isnt it.    My first ME play was maleshep, what struck me for femshep was seeing a woman do what any man could, if not better in many aspects. Especially as I much preferred Jen Hales VA right of the bat.    I grown up with Seagal, Arny, Stallone et al.  Its refreshing to see a female do it! And do it so well too.  Its breaks the norm and mould.    Thus why im so glad to see Bioware beginning to embrace her more.

Interestingly enough im sure theres more males who post in this thread and have femshep avatars too!

Oh Great mix-up wallpaper Akari! Very impressed B)
