Some of the actual romanceable characters seem well designed. Im a bit of a Thane fangirl, really. Jacob is sort of refreshing, I guess, in the sense that he's a fairly normal guy (unlike 90% of your crew - it seems like to get on board the Normandy you need a terrible, secret past; a severe mental problem; to be created/raised by mad-men; or preferably all of the above).
The actual romances were TERRIBLY written though, even when the characters were compelling.
As above, felt very shallow - the dialog clearly implies that its supposed to be more than just casual sex (usually) but you don't get at ALL the same sense of building intimacy that you did in ME1.
Also, I think its been mentioned before in the thread, but I felt really pervy coming on to jacob - "im interested, and thats enough for the both of us"? Really? Thats OK behavior towards my direct subordinate? Good thing I'm not coming on to him as maleshep - there'd be criminal charges involved, LOL!
The only one I felt really worked was Garus (because you get the feeling that, unlike most LIs, it does seem to be closer to "**** buddies" than "eternal love". You may really value his friendship, and, coincidentally, have the hots for him (at least enough to "relieve some stress"), but I didn't need to feel as if my shep had fallen deeply in love with him in order for the knockin' of boots to ring true. Though, of course, even that has its downside, since it feels that much _less_ intimate than even the other short romances if you really do want to totally fall for him ('cause, you know, its not like there's anyone in the community who feels like _that_ at all, *nod, nod*).
I actually felt the /best/ romance sub-plot was the abortive romance attempt with Samara, for a variety of reasons. Morinth trying to seduce you and eat your brain was fun too, although I kinda wish there were some b.tchier, funnier dialog option to tell her off with when you turn her down. freakin' succubus... try to make my brain assplode... *le grumble*
EDIT: I do agree that once improvement is the ability to let someone down gently, but clearly, rather than ME1s choices of "profess undying love (after they've mistaken your basic level of not being a total **** for romantic interest)" vs. "tell them to go f.ck themselves."
EDIT 2: Probably my 'cannon' Shep will stay loyal to Liara for ME3, excitingly scary personality changes and all (tried Kaden out in ME1, of course, but he was just so _boring_, so it was not-technically-lesbianism for me, in the end!).
