I have to agree with Cia. It's funny they're so surprised. And it isn't a good sign.
I think Bioware always believed the femshep crowd was a vocal minority, so continually dismissed it as a few diehard members. I mean we can blind ourselves to whats said outside the thread, but really it is said a lot on the forums for quite some time. The thing is its clearly not true and Bioware have just started to realise this.
Recently (as in the last few months) things have happened to counter this view point. The femshep thread clearly being one of the most active and content filled. The DA group having so many creative custom works. The onset of the femshep website. These things are attention grabbing. Even though we wanted it and been asking for a long time these occurances are fairly recent.
Someone has clearly noticed and said "hold on a minute is this group a minority?" To which they clearly figured is No! The femshep marketing comments and a poll on facebook isn't coincidence. They are gauging how large the popularity actually is. Bioware knows their statistics originally given are flawed (we know the points why and they stated its only a guide) so they are trying to figure out what the fan base is. So far they have worked out its much larger then they think. Potentially up to a third of people prefer femshep, not including people who have multiplays. So Im assuming from this information they are trying to create a strategy on what to do next for marketing. One in three people is hard to ignore after all and there a eager market to attract! We know the reasons why shes great, so its in Biowares interest to capitalise on it.
So maybe its not a good sign, they should have noticed earlier. But to be honest, I think they finally realised how big a fanbase there is and are attempting to figure out what to do next. I take that as a good sign!
