Aislinn...that was a VERY well done video. I'm not a particular fan of Thane's romance, but that...well, I'm horrible at compliments. "Great job" doesn't sound right, but hope ya get what I mean.

This is really interesting. It's nice to get a glimpse into the minds of the writers and the thought process that goes into writing Shep. I appreciate the gender-blindness in ME and that the few sexist jerks you encounter are anomalies that you can 'deal with' xD

Now, if only we could get some nice animations for her too, that aren't limp-wristed with over-exagerrated hip movements ughhhh

^ Nice work. I just hope the VS in ME3 will have as much badassedness to them as possible.

I kinda understand why Bioware did what they did to the VS in ME2, but I still want much badassery in ME3.

Edit:  I just remembered how much I hated the skyways on Feros.  Getting out of the Mako to "explore" the tunnels, Shep stands on the edge of the roadway, but the two squaddies materialize in thin air and fall to their doom, only to warp to Shep's side immediately...but then, with Shepard still obviously on her feet and looking perfectly healthy, I get the slow cam pan of death...CRITICAL MISSION FAILURE.

*sigh*  I hate it when that happens...and my last save was from over 20 minutes ago.  yay.

I still wish that they had done something with the VS in ME2 other than Horizon. I wasn't expecting something as epic as LotSB for Ash AND Kaidan, but having them in the final DLC would have been nice.

Something interesting to read actually. But for me, gender blindness is a good thing, what we had in mind was to put more short situations like those mentioned.

The Warrior Angel vid was a thing of beauty, Aislinn.  You are incredibly talented.

I've come in way behind the curve on this Twitter campaign and I do not have a Twitter account, nor do I know how to use the site (never actually visited it, honestly).  In my opinion though, default femShep should just look like Jennifer Hale.  Hale is both attractive and tough-looking, and would, for obvious reasons, be a perfect fit for the voice acting.

edit: It's been so long since I visited (over forty pages to catch up on since I last posted on this thread!), I figure it's a good time to go through my screenshots of Jessica and pull out some oldies that haven't been seen for over a thousand pages.

LOL !  Yeah, I thought I was far enough away, and I was kinda in a hurry.  I'm trying to redo 4 complete ME1 playthrus, followed by 4 complete ME2 playthrus before the middle of August...and since I'm married with 4 kids, I don't have alot of time.  So, I stop, get out...and boom, 20 minutes lost *sigh*  Proper quicksaving fail, on my part.  Ah well.  Posted Image

Im glad he linked back to the our request thread in there too as the source for the question   Glad a couple of people at Bioware have taken note of it now.

I also find it interesting how people are debating the issue more fluidly there.  Its clear the Bioware forums give a one sided look, so obviously it something Patrick is surprised we asked and is getting other opinions.

It seems people prefer Gender Blind on the whole.  which in fact I totally understand and want as it what makes femshep great.  Although I think many comments there are confused and think total scripts will be changed and femshep rewritten, which isnt what was intended.

Hmmm   me too    =)
I was absolutely sure that the arrival dlc would bring back the VS, I thought that it was a given. Still haven't had time to play it yet, got a F!Shep who's just going through ME2. Just did horizon speaking of VS, not my fav thing in the game but oh well. I hope that F!Shep that romances Kaidan will have a good opportunity to talk it over afterwards.

Ohh... concerning twitter, I finally caved last week and got my own account so I could follow things. It's really quite fun so give it a try if you want to see the latest snippets of info.

Personally, I've thought more about it and FemShep's gender doesn't need to be made a bigger deal of. I would like to hear, 'Mam' where it's appropriate instead of getting called 'Sir'...that's annoying.

The Batarian dialog and "call me princess" were great, though. I wouldn't mind a scene where a woman walks up to Shepard on the Citadel and tells her how much of an inspiration she is to little girls everywhere or something. That would be awesome.

@patsquinade

A few more scenes like the with Harkin and the "Don't call me Princess" line, or the baterian recruiter would be nice, but I agree they shouldn't go overboard with pointing out Shepard's gender. I would like them to get rid of any instance of 'Sir' though. It really grates when I do the ID tags quest on the Citadel and the C-Sec woman calls FemShep, Sir!

I don't think the point in Crash's thread was in requesting more references to Shepard as 'she' & 'her', but for a few more unique situations such as the line now adorning the thread title.

I totally agree. I think that he misunderstood the request a bit. Commander/commander Shepard is just fine instead of he/she. It would waste a bit more space and require additional work if it wasn't like it is now. Just a bit more unique situations and it would be just fine.

I just posted a comment there. In typical SkaldFish wall o' text fashion, I actually exceeded the max post length and had to gradually whittle it down. :P

While I agree with most that the (most of the time) gender blindness is the right approach going forward, I had two objections:

First, it troubled me a bit that he assumed people would prefer a "fun and entertaining" gaming world where they could escape from prejudice. One of the great values of science fiction is its abiity to reveal things we otherwise hide from ourselves by taking ordinary people and putting them in exptraordinary settings. BioWare already uses this device very effectively by making the Council almost rabidly prejudiced against humans. Why should gender bias be any different? Make it part of the story.

Second, some things that might seem like gender bias aren't. "He/she" usage is one example, and going to such lengths to avoid pronouns that the language gets awkward just erodes the realism of the experience. Another is the simple fact that FemShep probably weighs about 100 pounds less than MaleShep. While I'm not suggesting this means she needs to be made pnysically "weaker" in terms of what she actually does in the story, there probably does need to be some component within the story that explains how she can pop Kaidan up on her shoulder and carry him to the ship, or knock out helmeted mercs with one bare-fisted punch....

I also commented that gender bias cuts both ways. It would be nice if Shepard were a more rounded character capable of expressing a broader range of emotions completely independent of that "IsFemale" flag.*

* Ever wonder why it's an IsFemale flag and not IsMale or M for male & F for female?

I wish there were more ways to express emotion and personality, especially femininity with femshep. There should have also been "friendship" equivalents of the romance paths that would have allowed her to have sismances with Miranda,Ashley or Tali.

Just read the Pasquinade gender-blind post and its following replies. Brilliant. The insight into the thought behind the dialogue was enlightening. I find myself agreeing with most; the BW team has mostly nailed the dialogue, although I would like to hear more "ma'ams from the military sorts instead of always the neutral Cmdr. or Shepard. I think military types would use sir or ma'am a lot.

I also agreed that some aliens would show more gender bias relating to humans. They appear to have gender bias with their own species. We have never seen female Turians, Batarians, Krogans or Solarians. Is there a reason for that beyond the developers not wanting to build another alien body? Maybe they find it completely odd that the humans treat females equally. Maybe they did not at first understand females were different from males? Clearly there has been some time since first contact, but I would expect some background issues related to this.

@Skaldfish: Regarding the IsFemale flag. My bet is most of the programmers are male. Females are still fewer than 30% in most of the IT world. They would tend to start with male default. I don't think it reflects on game development.

We don't know much females Krogan. But because of the genophage, it looks like they are the most valuable "asset" for a clan.
But probably it wasn't always like that. When Grunt has his insight and realizes he hates turians, he tells Shepard about Shiagur, a female warlord. Is not much, but the reference is there.
And talking to Wrex in ME1, I haven't found a hint of Krogan looking down on females.

I agree with the writer on gender bias.

I don't particularly enjoy that kind of distinction. Manshep and Femshep are the same person, they are both Shepard first, man or woman second. One or two different lines is fine, one or two anecdotes add a little variety, like with Harkin (he's a drunken jackass after all, I would expect no less from him), plus the appropiate pronouns, but that's it. Generalize it and it will quickly become tiring, if not alienating.

I can't help thinking some terrible lines will inevitably be added. Not deliberatedly, of course, but gender stereotypes is something that slips into dialogue with astonishing ease simply because we all are creatures of our time. This is awfully frequent, and I don't want it in the game. The writer gave another example with a class in his post. ME1&2 did a good job of avoiding that risk simply by giving Manshep and Femshep the same lines except for the couple exceptions I mentioned.

Even if it's done well and the writers are extremely careful not to add inadvertent sexism into it (something I don't think is possible, but let's grant it for the sake of the argument), is it an improvement over ME1&2? What do we gain from it, really? The constant, self-conscious feeling that we are playing as a woman? We already know that, thank you.

I don't want to assume that because someone plays FemShep, their Shepard is automatically kinder, more sensitive, or interested in flirting. That kind of assumption is what gave us games where all the women are archers or healers, because gamers were ready to see a woman in a game, but not ready to see one in armor hitting things.

Brilliant.

I will confess, the ONE time I like different responses for genders is when I'm writing a jerk that I know the player will get to kill shortly thereafter. There's a warlord you're supposed to "negotiate with" in Mass Effect 1, and he's an ****, and if you're FemShep, he accuses the Alliance of sending you to seduce him.

I wouldn't have written that if you COULDN'T kill him two lines later.

Now THAT's what I want to hear from a ME writer.
