yeah, i said i'm all for 'flavor' (the show me yours tough guys stuff and all) and things that are reasonably romance-related (i like that the liaramance acknowledges that they are both women - well, sorta) but otherwise, they've got a good thing going.

you've got a good thing going in femshep, BW! don't change too much!

And after all, if we take a good long look at what FEMSHEP thinks, she obviously doesn't think much of having her gender noticed. "Tough guy" and "don't call me princess" are two such lines and both basically point out she's not amused at being labeled as a pretty girl.

top shep sometimes forgets that she is a woman. Unless someone points it out, of course.

@Skaldfish: Regarding the IsFemale flag. My bet is most of the programmers are male. Females are still fewer than 30% in most of the IT world. They would tend to start with male default. I don't think it reflects on game development.

To be fair, I don't know if the choice to default to a male character in a game where you can choose your gender is just because their programmers are male and/or that women are a minority in the IT world is necessarily reflective of their decision-making process. I mean, the amount of market research that goes into presenting anything to a consumer base - heh, might as well start at the beginning with financial backers -  tends to be pretty bloody in-depth if having to read this behemoth strategic plan + appendices for this butt-tabulous assignment I am procrastinating over is any indication. I would expect that pretty much every development/design decision when the game first got made would have been justified in some less arbitrary manner than gender dominance in the workplace.

I think the fact that existence of femShep is going to be vindicated by Bioware themselves now is largely because the ME franchise has been so successful. In proving they can punch out a sublimey stellar couple of games we've (mostly) happily given them our loyalty and our money (let's face it =P). In doing so we've validated their work and quantified their success, and I guess this gives them the wiggle room and the motivation to act upon situations where players start clamouring for studio-made footage of a female incarnation of our divine krogan-headbutting, elbow-jamming Ms Shepard.

Teal deer: There's a lot of non-arbitrary decision making behind default manShep and a lot of give and take between the ME team and their fans. Also lots of femShep-shaped love. Feel it. Feeeeeel it.

Also, that femShep tribute video is absolutely brilliant. I threw my hands up and exclaimed "YES!" very loudly when I heard that last line. I'll admit I've never played a manShep all the way through, but after watching that nothing short of a bonafide bromance with Garrus is going to make me sit through ME 1 + 2 to play ME3 as a guy.

Meet Zoe =D In-fill-tray-tor. Walks softly and carries a big gun. Loves kittens. Thinks of Wrex as her bro but runs with the girlsquad (Tali + Ash). Has a fledgling girlb*ner for Mister Vakarian. Will not be able to bring herself to romance Thane when she hits ME2 after she realises the markings on his head made him look like a soccer ball (I AM SO SORRY I KNOW HE CAN'T HELP IT). Is going to save the god damn universe. And then she'll do it again. And again. FemShep lives. Don't you forget it =P

@ Nostang: I didn't mean that maleShep being the game default was arbitrary. I agree that was planned. I was simply commenting on the variable name. I doubt that was a planned element. Marketers probably never think about the coders.

Awesome.  I love the tiny acknowledgement of Kyrie's, that, finally, she realizes she can't do it alone.

The improvement in your writing since you started posting "Valkyrie" has been obvious and vast.  You are a fantastic author.

Okay, now I actually have a question about your femSheps.

Are all of them going to be universally happy to see and/or accepting of their old crew members once they come back as squaddies in ME3?

I ask this because I realize that Jessica is going to be a total bee-eye-itch to Kaidan.  The first reason is fairly obvious, of course... Horizon was pretty much the nail in the coffin for any sort of amicable relationship between them.  Having someone basically call her a traitor to her face would not be something Jessica could overlook, given her silent but adamant expectation of total loyalty from friends.  But the troubles started long before that, all the way back when Ash died on Virmire.  That's a decision that Jessica continuously regrets, to the point of having a lucid dream of asking Ash to forgive her for it, and as much as she knows logically that she can't blame Kaidan for it, emotionally she does anyway.  Things were not okay between them for any of the time between Virmire and the start of ME2, and in ME3, I expect him to be the only crew member that she just straight up treats badly.

Oddly, I'm anticipating this potential relationship more than just about any other... it'll be probably the most marked opportunity for really roleplaying Jessica Shepard, as opposed to just Commander Shepard, in any of the three games (if it's done well, at least).

So does anyone else have a Shepard who is not going to be happy to see one (or more) of their returning crewmates again?

Agreed.  I just read "Valkyrie" and it's amazing how far you've come as a writer since then!

You gonna cover Arrival/LotSB or any other post-game events?  Or will that go into a bridge fic?

Not really.  I have an idea for a short story which takes place post-Arrival/pre-ME3 where Alice lets herself get 'captured' by newly-minted Spectre Ashley Williams so that they'd have some time to talk.  I was going to use that as a means for her to vent all of her frustrations, express that she still cares for/trusts Ashley, and also plant the seed of doubt that the Alliance may not be as altruistic in promoting Ashley as she might hope.

But no, once the Reapers come she'll gladly welcome Ashley (and everyone else) back on board.  Let's just hope that's not her downfall...

finished reading and I loved the relfection Kyrie did before going into the debreifing room. as sable said it's amazing how you've grown as a writer, just from Chapter 1 of Vahalla to now. It's a great compliment to a writer when readers can tell they've improved over the course of a story and it makes a story better when the writer progresses along with the plot. As i said in my review it was agreat chapter after a long wait and I can't wait for the rest of the Suicide Mission.Posted Image

That's a good one, Sable.

It is hard not to be happy after you have died for 2 years and able to see you former crew in the vast volume of galaxy. Colly will be pleased since she cares about her sqaud
On the other hand, Velina would want to see what Kaidan will do about those words he said on Horizon, if she fail to see him really want to make up to her, sorry to say Kaidan will lose her once and for all. If there's an option to reject him from being a squardmate, she will take it....

Good question. Sarah really don't know what to do with Kaidan, she want to see if he's really sorry for what he said on Horizon and if he want to make up for it. If he don't then he will lose Sarah once and for all and she might even reject him from the squad but that's unlikely. She need a strong squad and Kaidan might be one of them.

Probably the only squadmate my Shepards would not want back would be Zaeed. He is first and foremost a merc and he probably would not have the mission first attitude they want. Mostly, my Cmdrs want all the help they can get to take down the reapers.

They may not want Grunt. He is after all, not a mature Krogan and could be unreliable, no matter the amazing capabilities of a perfect Krogan.

There's deleted dialogue from the Turian groundskeeper where he asks femshep if she's female because she has "funny bumps" on her chest. They should have kept that in.

Old crew..hmm, things between her and Liara have been resolved already in LotSB (their friendship I mean, Jenn is with Kaidan). Garrus and Tali are already with her. Things between her and wrex are fine, so that leaves Kaidan.

Frankly, Jenn doesn't know what she'd do once she sees him again. As much as it hurt, she knew he was in shock on Horizon and doesn't blame him for walking away. Heck, she hated working with Cerberus, but she knew it was her job and she had to do it no matter how much she hated them.

Do I think she's going to be happy seeing again? Yes and no, she loves him deeply, truly, crazily, but does she want him to see her in trial? while people call her a mass murderer? Nope she doesn't. She already believes he thinks she has fallen to the dark side - pun intended :P

Jennifer as a leader has always been the tough but fair kind, a paragon but doesn't hesitate to use her fist when she needs to, and everything she does is calm, calculated and for a reason, that was until she died and returned. In ME2 Jenn has about a bar full of renegade, because there were times when even the good cyborg (Seriously, her crew thinks she doesn't have tear glands) can't be so calm after all she's been through.

After Arrival, verything comes crashing down; she died, she was reserructed, she killed 300,000 people...That facade of calm she has is cracking; Jenn's terrified from what she's been through, from what she's done and from what she's about to go through. And she's going to be very emotional, or as emotional as Shepard can get.

Seeing Kaidan again would be her death. If he sees her so weak, she's going to lose it because she doesn't want him to see her like that, and if h tries to comfort her, she's going to lose it because she isn't sure if she let herself go she could reign it in again in time for her to go out there and be commander Shepard to defeat those giant space bugs.

So yeah, it's pretty confuzzled, but what I do know is she's going to be both glad and terrified when he's there.

Kallen will have a mixed reaction to Ashley coming back, hell  a mixeed reaction to the alliance for that matter. she was a career girl, took all their prep programs in high school and College started at the highest rank before being an NCO, climbed up the ranks, was top of her class in N7 training did everything they asked of her and when she was dead all they did was disown her and call everythign she ever did into question. That's part of the reason she keeps the base for cerberus because they believed in her enough to bring her back to life and put all their eggs in her basket. She and TIM butt heads alot, but she did the same with some of the brass. With ashley back in the picture I have a feeling  she wouldn't be getting any romance in the thrid game since her and ash had a falling out and then her whole thing with Miranda might make it awkward for her. Liara coming back might make her angry unless she moves part of the Shadow broker network to the Normandy because Intel is more valuable to her than Liara joining the fight. She might Make Garrus's spot optional since she really wanted him to go out on his own in C-Sec or the Turian military, Same for Tali except with the Migrant fleet. If Wrex is a squadmate Kallen would ask to see the structure of the Krogan military so that it's not out of whack without him in charge. Msot of the ME2 squad would be welcomed back with open arms, though Thane might be told to spend his last days with Kolyat and Legion told to return to the Geth unless he can communicate with them from the normandy.Posted Image

thanks guys.

@ The Marshal - yes, I do have a lotsb/arrival story in my head. i do hope to get it out before me3 comes out. given that the game got delayed, i guess i have time, no?

Sable Phoenix wrote...

it's hard for me to answer this. a LOT is going to depend upon what ME3 does to reintroduce the squad.

for kaidan specifically, i've been writing my shep and him into a place where i think their reunion will be...interesting, to say the least. but whether the writing in ME3 will actually support my plottings, i cannot say. kyrie is usually a resoundingly proud, independent, frankly rather b*tchy person, but i see her as softening in many ways in ME2, even as she grows stronger elsewhere. like... like before she's ice, which is strong, but brittle and later she becomes stronger, but in a more flexible way, if that makes sense. again though, ME3 will determine a lot of what i do there. i really don't like going off-canon too much. it's just not my style for the fanfic.

(but if all goes well, i do have reams of stuff that i'll post, b/c it's all my reunion stuff.)

as for the rest of the team. well. miri and samara, tali and garrus, wrex and liara, thane and jacob and joker and kasumi and chakwas and gardiner are all welcome to come with shep anywhere.

grunt and jack better get it together. otherwise, kyrie's dumping them on omega. zaeed can go take a flying leap any old time.

legion....she's keeping an eye on. i do not trust the geth. this is one REALLY more renegade part of kyrie (and me) but there is a deep and abiding dislike and distrust of AI for her. she'll use them, she 'trusts' them insofar as she'll make use of them, but she is always concious of them as 'other' and will likely never get over that.
