ya know, i've been playing da:o again (after mostly ignoring it after several abandoned playthroughs) and it's really weird to me how rarely i ever see my warden. in ME, you see shep ALL the time. fighting, obviously, but the cutscenes show her off so much. with the warden though, it's like i never see her - they rarely ever show the PC. it's really strange, because even back in jade empire and kotor you saw your character all the dang time. it really fostered this fondness for your character. but in da:o, it's like even the game doesn't want to look at the warden. it's really strange.

Yeah I had issues with immersion, also when you do see the warden it's kinda bland/stale.sagequeen wrote...

Jade Empire and KotOR got a pass from me because the graphics were considerably limited back then. Not so jarring to go between fully animated/voiced NPCs and a non-voiced PC.

Player agency and having the ability to be proactive in the game counts for much more than just being able to select something and hear an VA say something verbose. I think it's more about how well the game enforces a bond between the player and their character, whereby the character is able to perform the will of the player as much as possible so that you feel like you're in this with them not just watching.

I so identified with this post in a way. It's exactly the reason why I can only enjoy Jade Empire playing with Scholar Ling. I think it's about the eyes, which are extra important in a mute character (eyes are the window to the soul right?). In order to kinda forget that I'm essentially playing with dolls and feel ashamed of myself because of that, I need to make believe the character isn't an empty husk made of polygons but a person who lives in that world, the same way you can watch a movie and pretend those things are really happening to those people who are totally not actors. The thing is Ming, Wu and the rest of them gave me the impression (subjective and personal of course) of having lifeless eyes, and looking at them took me out of the game every single time. Ling however looked different for some reason (differently shaped eyes maybe?). She has exactly the same expression as the others, but there's something there that I find alive. And besides, she looked sooo cute when she did the 'scared' expression...ELE08 wrote...

Not to bash DAO b/c I loved it, but that wasn't such a terrible thing. Seems like every shot of my warden she's like this empty eyed mannequin looking abomination. Pretty, but soul-less. I imagine it's hard to bring a character to life visually that has no voice, it's essentially a player avatar. Shep on the other hand is this living thing who you just kind of nudge in one direction or the other and watch what plays out. It's possible Jade Empire and KotOR got a pass from me because the graphics were considerably limited back then. Not so jarring to go between fully animated/voiced NPCs and a non-voiced PC.

Ok, I can't help it, I NEED to share this. As I said in a post here social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/103/index/7419951 I've been shareing a very G rated version of ME with my 6 year old daughter, who is currently gaga for FemShep. At one point I asked her what she thought about Commander Shepard being a guy. She gave me a "Mom, you are so weird" look, and said that she thought that would be very silly.
Today, as we were playing Mass Effect, here is the story she suddenly invents. "Look out Mommy, there's a spy. He's pretending to be Commander Shepard! We need to stop him!" And off she went, the "real" Commander Shepard to stop the guy pretending to be her.......

Somewhat off topic but here are two new shots of my FemShep, Lark. She is an adept that I built some long bio around how Cerberus altered her biotic abilities (like Jack..) which resulted in the obvious physical conditions you see here.
