Not to bash DAO b/c I loved it, but that wasn't such a terrible thing. Seems like every shot of my warden she's like this empty eyed mannequin looking abomination. Pretty, but soul-less. I imagine it's hard to bring a character to life visually that has no voice, it's essentially a player avatar. Shep on the other hand is this living thing who you just kind of nudge in one direction or the other and watch what plays out. It's possible Jade Empire and KotOR got a pass from me because the graphics were considerably limited back then. Not so jarring to go between fully animated/voiced NPCs and a non-voiced PC.

Yeah I had issues with immersion, also when you do see the warden it's kinda bland/stale.
I much more prefer voiced, with more animation and the more active convo-camerawork of ME/ME2/DA2.
I honestly don't think I can go back to Origins now =/

I think it depends more on the game than whether a chacter has an actor reading from a script, The Courier in New Vegas doesn't say anything and that character felt incredibly personal. It let you build and customize the character to your will, skills and perks all allowed your character to be stupid, smart, seductive or violent. One of the weak parts of Origins was that they didn't do enough to give The Warden a real commanding presence on the screen, though DA2 didn't fix that for me. I just got more and more distanced from Hawke to the point where I came to hate my own character.

Player agency and having the ability to be proactive in the game counts for much more than just being able to select something and hear an VA say something verbose. I think it's more about how well the game enforces a bond between the player and their character, whereby the character is able to perform the will of the player as much as possible so that you feel like you're in this with them not just watching.

gorgeous! i love her look! she is rocking ... well, everything, really.

and re: the soulless PC in da:o.

i dunno. i don't think it was just voiced vs. non-voiced. i think shep works because i don't think jennifer hale could voice a character and have her NOT feel like a person. but even in playing co-op borderlands, which was about as NON-rpg as you could get, the siren felt like a "real" person to me. not a character, per se, she was still an avatar, but she had personality. and my version of revan and of radiant jen zhi all also felt like characters to me. i can totally supply the voice in my head for the "choose dialog option x" but it's just strange that for all the choices the warden has, the warden is just this non-entity. the never seeing the warden really contributes to that. compare it with jade empire, where while you're choosing a line of dialog, the PC makes a face to demonstrate the emotion that goes with it (smiles, scowls, etc.)

anyhow, i guess it's just a decison point - they decided to avoid animations to focus on other aspects - but after playing ME for so long, it's just really bizarre to be stuck behind the PCs shoulder the entire game.

There's just something about the way FemShep lights up the screen.  The CC is hard to get a handle on at first but once you know what you are doing, it's nice to be able to look at your creation and be proud.  There are times where I just stop and marvel at her.  Combine that with Jen Hale's voice and it's just...

Ok, I can't help it, I NEED to share this.  As I said in a post here social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/103/index/7419951 I've been shareing a very G rated version of ME with my 6 year old daughter, who is currently gaga for FemShep. At one point I asked her what she thought about Commander Shepard being a guy. She gave me a "Mom, you are so weird" look, and said that she thought that would be very silly.
Today, as we were playing Mass Effect, here is the story she suddenly invents.  "Look out Mommy, there's a spy. He's pretending to be Commander Shepard! We need to stop him!" And off she went, the "real" Commander Shepard to stop the guy pretending to be her.......

I so identified with this post in a way. It's exactly the reason why I can only enjoy Jade Empire playing with Scholar Ling. I think it's about the eyes, which are extra important in a mute character (eyes are the window to the soul right?). In order to kinda forget that I'm essentially playing with dolls and feel ashamed of myself because of that, I need to make believe the character isn't an empty husk made of polygons but a person who lives in that world, the same way you can watch a movie and pretend those things are really happening to those people who are totally not actors. The thing is Ming, Wu and the rest of them gave me the impression (subjective and personal of course) of having lifeless eyes, and looking at them took me out of the game every single time. Ling however looked different for some reason (differently shaped eyes maybe?). She has exactly the same expression as the others, but there's something there that I find alive. And besides, she looked sooo cute when she did the 'scared' expression...

Shepard is a whole different story and great, natural voice acting is clearly a huge factor in bringing the doll to life.

Alright now the other reason for this post: a pic! :D

Somewhat off topic but here are two new shots of my FemShep, Lark.  She is an adept that I built some long bio around how Cerberus altered her biotic abilities (like Jack..) which resulted in the obvious physical conditions you see here.

I found it odd how little you see your character in DA:O as well. I had no real attachment to either character I made in that game, as for one you hardly ever saw them, they didn't speak, and just stared blankly all the time at whomever you were talking to. And, they never react to anyhing that's going on in the story. They just feel like an empty, emotionless, mannequin.

I think that's one of the great things about Shepard. She comes across (most of the time) like a real person. She reacts to what's happeneing around her and to what people are saying, and all those little facial animations that you see when she's talking to people really help bring her to life.

I can play a game with a silent protagonist, but I can't connect with them as a character. I've played FO3 for example and while I loved the game, I had no attachment to the character I created, as they never spoke and you rarely see their face. Yeah you can be an arse or a saint or somewhere in between with the dialogue choices, but it's not the same as seeing, or hearing your character do something inresponse to a situation.
