100% Renegade choices. (Wrex/Shiala are alive, though.) It was hard keeping the collector base. :[

I just have to say this. Tup, the quality of your screenshots are phenomenal. What kind of voodoo do you have going on there? xD Seriously though, great shots!

^_^ Everything maxed out (yup, I've touched the BIOEngine.ini; changed shadowing technique for example) at 1920x1080 with 8xMSAA, 4x transparency supersampling and trilinear + 16x anisotropic filtering. Film grain and motion blur are turned off, those suck big time in ME1. On top of that ambient occlusion which makes the biggest difference. I downsample everything to 960x540 resolution for posts.

Teh pouwah of overclocked GeForce GTX 570 and i7 2600K @ 4,2GHz.

I do not post process my pics in any way.

Need to mangle my bf's pc that way too me thinks. Have to look into flycam for ME2 too, but haven't bothered with the coalesced yet. (think it needs to be put in there no?)

Yes, for flycam in ME2 you have to tweak coalesced.ini.

Not only that, but I really like how Jacob is able to handle his personal issues. Olivia wants him to open up about his inner conflicts and problems. Jacob tells her that he doesn't carry them around with him, and he doesn't really want her to try and "fix him". Olivia persists, and Jacob gets pissed. That is SUCH a guy/girl relationship thing! As a guy, I have had my ex's want me to expose them, and I really am not a very touchy-feely kind of person, and it has lead many of the women I've known to get the impression that I'm not very open. This is not the case. Its just that, as with many men, I process my emotions and inner conflicts differently than many women.

Many women (but certainly not all) want to talk about their internal feelings and struggles. They like having those kind of conversations with people. Men, who aren't usually quite as emotional (once again, certainly not all men) often just let things go, or prefer to let them fester inside. When femShep insists that Jacob open up to her, its almost as if she wants to find something wrong with him so she can find her place in his life by fixing it (she more or less says this). The fact that she's really working at peeling away his layers is something that maleShep is never really into, and is a very small, but very distinct (and excellent) difference between the two gender PCs.

This is so true.  And also why I love Jacob.  It makes him seem more realistic.  The gender difference in-game is probably unintentional though, because every character who can't be romanced gets their dialogue abruptly cut-off.

I wonder, do people like it when NPCs can fundamentally disagree with them and actually act on it? I do.  It happens so rarely in Mass Effect, Jacob with femShep is a notable example.

Then again, he never disagrees with my femShep :P She understands his ways.  The fact that he can though = awesome.

Kind of random thought, and perhaps one that's a little too sticky for me to take on this early in the morning -

I've noticed a number of feminist blog posts/commentary showing up surrounding femshep and BW's decision to give her more reaction. Some (actually, quite a few) of these posts are from people who've never even played the games.

While I do find it interesting to read about how people feel the lack of gender-based dialog around femshep gives her this freedom from stereotypes and all, I have to admit that part of me is kind of tired of it already (boy, i bore easily). While I would certainly consider myself a feminist, I think there's a definite danger in coming to see everything through the lens of have/have-not with relation to gender privelege.

And that's pretty much why femshep works: you can analyze it forever, but the point is that how she was written + jen hale's voice + how you can RP it how you like it = awesome lady. And that's kind of all I care about anymore. I just hope she continues that way into ME3, even if that means she still runs like a linebacker.

@ ELE - I LOVE it when NPCs disagree with you. It used to bother me, but I've come to love it. I've been bringing Morrigan and Alistair everywhere with me in da:o and loving how one of them is always unhappy with what i do. seriously, in real life, you can't please everyone, and i like seeing that in games.

and kaidan on horizon - i totally agreed with him and thought his standing up to shep was ah...hot, actually.

yummm....

ahem

but i know i'm the minority there. (hence all the rage surrounding horizon, i think)

I like it as well, I consider it fundamental to any good RPG experience. Those kinds of disagreements need to be grounded, though, so they don't come out of the blue. We need to know enough about the character to understand their disagreements. See Leliana/Wynny in the Sacred Ashes scene in Dragon Age: Origins. What they do there is completely in character. Jacob is a character ideal for those moments since we do understand that he has a clear understanding of where his right/wrong line is.

So yeah, Shepard needs pushback, she really does.

lol. that was the blog i was referring to, but i missed the comment.

it's a GREAT post.

edit: i guess this is why i do like the customization thing so much. it's not, actually, that femshep is necessarily a jerk. it's that you can make her so if you like, or whatever, and yes, people react to her based on what she does - not any preconcieved stereotypes about her race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

^ that kind of reaction only happens out in the forums...

However, when EverQuest 2 rolled around, I went a different way and impulsively created a heavy-set female-identifying character who was also dark-skinned with a gleaming mane of silver hair. She stood out in a crowd like a brightly-spangled circus pony in a sea of cattle.

I went lizard-lady monk, booyah!

There are feminists and raving zealot "feminists" and I pray God that those lunatics let femShep alone. I'm scared what they might come up with.

^ Pretty much this.  I'm all for stereotypes and biases being discarded, but there is a small (but very vocal) segment to the feminist movement that are more about male-bashing than they are about female-empowering.  Gender bashing of any kind is just not ok, in my opinion.

thankfully, femshep has stood up to almost complete neglect and "no one plays as femshep lol" trolls for several years now. i'm thinking she can stand up to scrutiny as well, thankfully.

I was one of the proponents for including more gender specific comments and dialogue. That doesn't mean I want her to start crying or have a nervous breakdown ever 15 minute ala Starbuck in BSG. Nor does it mean I want more rude comments. More than anything, it'd be nice just to have her called "ma'am" a little more often, if for no other reason than to break up the monotony of the near constant "Commander" and "Shepard." For whatever reason, that got on my nervous to the point "Hey You" would have been preferable.
