That is also a substantial reason as to why the movie will be met with a largely negative reception if it features Shepard at all.

Interesting read, Fianna. Thanks for sharing. The content of that article once again reiterates the fact that people are largely resistent to the prevelance of Sheploo in Mass Effect's marketing, as it seemingly establishes a "standard" Shepard. This is extremely jarring and creates a sense of detachment, considering the fact that almost every single aspect of Shepard's character is customiseable and that players are forced to perceive a character that is not "their" Shepard assuming the role as the series' protagonist.

Can't be helped. They need a face to show people, because otherwise they can't show anything. 90% of the game has Shepard's face in it. And when it comes to marketing, do you think people are just going to get that Shepard A, B, C, D, E, F, G are the same character, just with a different face? No, they won't. They might think they're different characters, and wonder why they aren't in the game. Dragon Age had a similar problem. See that guy in the Ashes trailer? He isn't even in the game. Not even as a default character.

Yeah, there is quite enough material in the Mass Effect universe available for the writers of the ME movie to take from, rehashing Shepard's story would be disappointing, especially because people will point to it as "canon", no matter what the devs say.
FemShep makes her own canon.

I disagree, and do not believe that a default face, appearance and gender for the character of Commander Shepard is necessary, because I think that it is not a necessity for Commander Shepard to feature in promotional material to any significant degree at all. The Mass Effect series has a wealth of deep, fleshed-out and recogniseable characters. Why noy focus on them for the purposes of marketing and PR? Both Ashley and Garrus were the poster characters for ME1. Why was Sheploo's existence necessary? I believe that they should have focused on the respective characters of Ashley and Garrus in ME1's marketing, whilst also keeping the identity of Commander Shepard vague and ambiguous. That way, there would have been little confusion or frustration with regards to BioWare creating a default Shepard that some see as being a more legitimate version of the character, when this is wrong as almost every aspect and element of Shepard's character is customiseable and player-defined.
However, if they had decided to focus on both Ashley and Garrus with ME1, and Miranda and Thane for ME2, as the marketing characters, then there would have been virtually no issues at all.

But they aren't the story. Shepard is the story. Shepard's the main character. And Ash and Garrus? 2 people you have interviews with in a room. That's not really cinematic. Speaking of which, look at the Interview videos for ME2, and tell me how many times you see Shepard, because said character is talking to him? Hell, you can't even talk about Shepard without saying him or her.

I agree with your points, TZ. I do not believe it is necessary for the movie to star Commander Shepard, and that it should be a prequel to the main trilogy, most likely set during the events of the first contact war and featuring youthful versions of Anderson, TIM and Saren.
Oh, and I love Gwen Shepard, Teen! She's gorgeous!

Disagree. The squadmates are interesting and well fleshed-out enough to be the focal point of the game's marketing, in addition to Shepard's identity perhaps remaining vague and ambiguous enough to not establish a default version of the character. A marketing face is not necessary for Shepard, I believe.
Unless, of course, BW wish to establish Sheploo as an iconic video game character, on par with Marcus Fenix or whoever. I don't believe they should try to do this, though.

No they aren't if you're just showing a trailer. Because I didn't buy ME2 for Thane, Miranda, Grunt, Mordin, or Jack. I bought it for Shepard. Again, look at the trailers. Thane's is probably the only one that doesn't show Shepard much. Other then that, there isn't an angle where Shepard isn't in the same frame. Also, tell me a story with visuals, without showing the main character?

Why people are so against FemShepards with buns? Taking into consideration how many prefer the short haircut, I'd say FemSheppie with long hair put in a professional manner is a rare GEM.![]()
I like the buns. One of my three Shepards has one.
I think that hair looks good.

The other that I just made has the shaved hair style....easy maintenance

See, that's the thing...I don't want to be told the story of my main character in a game such as this. I want to make the story myself.

And you do. But Bioware isn't marketing to you. They already have you. Marketing is about getting Pizza Man to play Mass Effect.

I've already stated that we disagree on a fundamental aspect of this debate, which renders it pretty much redundant. Why pursue it at all, and derail the thread? I think that the squaddies are strong enough characters to be the focal point of the game's marketing, which you disagree with. Any further arguing is pointless.
Like I said, Shepard does not have to be absent altogether. The identity of the character just needs to remain vague and ambiguous. Perhaps he or she should always be depicted wearing full N7 armour?

It just boils down to they have to market something, some sort of main character. And the animation for the cinematic trailers can be expensive to whoever the contract it out to. So they go for the cliche male badass marine, ect ect. Do I like it, meh, can I change it, nah. Would I love to see a cinematic with Jennifer Hale as femshep. Yes definatly.

Yeah they are fun, but only with Geth and mechs about. If not... sniper time! Although I think the Geth Plasma shotgun will probably work better for them now.
Anyway did you give your combat drone a nickname?

Actually, all of my Shepards are Liara romancing. I have a problem.
