Ugh. The more I think about the results for the Facebook poll, the more irritated I get. It's not like I intend to use a default face since I do have my own characters to choose from, but Bioware is missing a great opportunity to feature cover art that is so different from the norm. It's bad enough that we have few main female characters to cheer on, but now we have a design that's safe, typical, and disappointing....like a loaf of Wonderbread. She doesn't even look like a woman in her late twenties!

You DO know that the fans choose who the default is, right? The fans chose to vote for the safe option. Deal with it. Besides, it's just concept art right now, not the final product.

"Dealing with it" is what I've done through much of my gaming life so knock off with the condescension. My post highlighted Bioware's ability to choose a Shepard that is not conventional. They do not have to rely on a Facebook poll. It's ironic that someone posting in a FemShep thread (which is ostensibly about a side of Shepard that was often dismissed in advertising) would find it hard to see an issue from another perspective, cause you know.....don't a lot of maleShep fans tout their 80% statistic to show off his popularity and justify the diminished visibility of FemShep?

@Sage:  Thanks for the empathy. =]

The complaints make me feel like we're looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Honestly Bioware is going out of their way to give (most of) us what we've wanted for a long time.
More cheering people!

Though ofc she could have had a more unique feel to her, but yeah catering to the mayority this is what you get, still, it rocks my world.

There. I fixed that quote for you. A lot of Mass Effect fans derided those of us who supported femShep and claimed that we "whined" about her lack of exposure. Funny how femShep fans are directing that same line of thinking towards their own, or at least those who were hoping for a less conventional look.

As I said in another thread, change, even if it is something as trivial as a video game, takes time. I understand your concerns and would love to see a Martha Washington style femShep grace the cover, but that's a few steps down the road I'm afraid.  Until then we have to take what we can.  But nobody said we couldn't keep asking for more.

You really don't need to take that as i said it to you, i've seen so much whining about them looking horrible or so barbie like or whatever people want to say

Either way have a Shep

It's erm, doesn't have to do anything with what they support or not in my case.
There was something subpar, now we're getting something better. Whether or not it could be LOADS better still, unquestionably, but don't you think it comes off rather rediculous to complain about what we're being given while otherwise we'd have been given none?

It is what it is, Bioware goes out of it's way to try and please us, so yeah, ofc we're all different, and we all like different things, but a clear improvement to the status-quo should be cheered on rather then regarded negatively because it's not exactly what we wanted.

Today I learned about Martha Washington.

Really now, when fans complain about the lack of non-white protaganists, don't accuse these fans of "whining" or being "nit picky". It's a serious issue and to suggest otherwise is insulting and hypocritical, especially given the history of FemShep's rise to fame. (not directing this last bit to you Jamie)

I actually voted for 4, love her, because she's tinted. I myself am blonde as hell, though my boyfriend seems to disagree and call it brown < stubborn. Anyways going wayyy off-track. Point being, I get it.

Wow. I disappear for a couple weeks or so because Fallout 3 GOTY was super cheap on the Steam summer sale (and I've been sinking many hours into it since), and it seems like everything happens at once! Apologies for just jumping back in without having read the last ~50 pages, and double apologies if I'm just repeating others' thoughts.

Re: The FemShep concept arts up on Facebook - hmmm... I've seen others mention that these FemShep concepts don't really look FemShep's age, and I tend to agree. Still, they are nice looking art, but yeah, rather conventional. Oh well. FWIW, I voted for #3 (brunette with the slicked back hair), though #5 would be a close second. Is it me, or do they all have kind of a Kiera Knightley facial structure? Especially #5.

Anyway, we'll see what comes of it. Whatever Bioware does with her, I'm sure she'll be pretty much along the lines of the many excellent femSheps I see around here: a very nice femShep, but not MY femShep.
;)

Semi-off/semi-on-topic aside: As I mentioned, I have been playing Fallout 3. This was the first time I'd ever played it, or any Fallout game. Is it strange that, like Mass Effect, I cannot imagine playing it with anything but a female character? Like Mass Effect (and any other game where I can choose), I tend to find the story more compelling with a female lead.

Being the femShep thread, I'm sure there are many of you who do the same. Even as a male gamer, though, I always choose a female character  when the choice is there. Not because I want to be female and see the character as an avatar of myself, or not (well, mostly) because I want to stare at a female backside if I'm playing 3PPoV, but mainly because I've always found it adds to the story and makes it more enjoyable for me. What can I say; I like strong female characters in any medium.
B)

No new pics, as I've been spending all my time lately wandering the DC wastelands, but a few favs of Artemis and Liara:

FemShep Shouldn't Need Your Approval.

An interesting article on femShep and the current BioWare marketing strategy.  I'm not posting this to stir up anything, because I know people are split on the current marketing strategy of FemShep.  Truthfully, I can see both  sides and understand nearly everyone's concerns.  That said, the above article is one of the best I've ever read on femShep.  That it takes a side in the debate is kind of secondary to its awesomeness.

An interesting article on femShep and the current BioWare marketing strategy.

Hmmm... From the article:

The iconic default FemShep is nowhere to be found.

While true, is the default Jane Shepard really "iconic"? Maybe I just never thought so because after a false start with a default MaleShep, I went custom FemShep and Artemis was born, so using default Jane never really occured to me, nor did she strike me as "iconic". This could also be due to the fact that I don't think she's been used in any (or at least any I've seen, though I admit ignorance here) promo materials.

Does she strike any of you all that way? Obviously, there are some here who use the default Jane, so I'm sure the answer is yes. But, still... just curious.

Continuing from the article:

I can't speak on her behalf, but I'm pretty sure she didn't spend thirty
years working her ass off to become a soldier, then a commander, then
the first human specter and finally hero of the Alliance to be judged on
her physical appearance and then have it altered to please public
opinion.

DAAAAAMMMMNNN STRAIGHT! B)

Of course, I'd like to see the one I voted for be the one they choose, but I can get behind the idea that it might have simply been better if Bioware had made all the decisions and released their iconic FemShep without public input. They've already shown they can design good characters, and I don't think there's any reason to pander to the public for this. Also, I too am sick of the "sexification" of Mass Effect. In ME1 people wore armor/space suits. In ME2 we got litte Ms. Latex-Mc-Datass (apologies to Miranda fans, but IMHO one of the best lines in the game was the merc who made the comment about waiting for her to finish getting dressed; Jack is gold to take along on that mission). Granted, this may have changed as I haven't kept up with any recent promos, but Ashley for ME3 seems to have got a boob-job and now prefers open collared tight latex over her standard Alliance blue fatigues. I don't like this direction with Mass Effect.

Ah well...

Still, oddly, I haven't been paying enough attention to the marketing lately (there are no Mass Effect ads on Galaxy News Radio, natch ;))  so all of this kind of rolls off me, especially since I'm committed to my canon femShep. Oh well, we'll see how things continue.

[edit]
And, my apologies if this has already been debated over the last many pages and I missed it in my absense. Don't mean to dredge up any old arguments.
:?

So, here's Artemis pointing a gun in somone's face. :wizard:

I guess Jane 'didn't focus test right.'

Meh, I don't care what default Femshep looks like.
1. I never play default anything.
2. I'm just happy Femshep is getting attention. This whole "choose FemShep!" is marketing genius. Its making us get excited about ME3 without showing us any new content. (Besides possible hair styles for FemShep)
3. I don't mind Shepard being beautiful. Sheploo is a good looking guy, *ducks from throwing rocks* Why can't our old girl be a knock out too? When you are on planet Dorn stomping badies head's into the mud who the hell cares if she has lovely golden locks? What Shepard looks like will not keep her from doing her job.
4. Do people actually care or are you complaining just to make sure you are still alive?

As a woman, who is in fact, in her late 20s, and almost the same age as femshep, we do not all look haggard, age creased and world weary.  Nor do I think would femshep should have to look like she smokes a pack a day and sleeps in a dirt cave.  You think in a future with mass relays and space travel the average alliance soldier has to really rough it that often? The Mass Effect future is full of gene modification, humans that can live practically to 200 years, futuristic cosmetic and lifestyle conveniences, and who knows what else.  Is a youthful female Commander Shepard really that hard to believe?

I totally understand the disappointment at a character that doesn't look like someone you can relate to.  But from the other side, anyone's preference for an ethnic, dark skinned, less than conventional beauty, or [insert whatever you like here] is just that: a preference.  Just because it's underrepresented doesn't make it any more valid than someone else's preference for a conventionally beautiful young looking protagonist.

The blond option isn't my personal first choice, but I still think she looks amazing.  Unfortunately, it's a fact that the old default Jane had low rez textures and unrealistic facial proportions, unlike Sheploo who was modeled after a real person.  There is no argument that can change this.  Bioware is taking the time to fix this.  The fact that Bioware took time to make a detailed femshep that rivals Sheploo in quality I think is awesome and I'm grateful.  Whether or not they "should have" in the first place is irrelevant to me.  I don't care if she's not my preference for hair color/skin color, she looks good!  I'm thankful they did it, and totally excited to see her in trailers and ME3.

It just feels like there's a lot of complaining and very little celebration about what is a major victory for fans of the character.

The old caveat holds true: you can't please everybody, especially in matters of taste.

5. How many of us are even really going to use the new default femShep for more than a few runs? Many of us femShep lovers already have our series long femSheps with us. Unless BW releases a patch for ME1 and ME2, allowing us to create the new default femShep for those games, we'll probably just stick with our own stone cold stunners for most ME3 play throughs.
:):):)

In the end its not really worth worrying about who the new femShep is. She's just the face of marketing. And if game data tracking counts for anything, the male default for the ME games was almost never used by most players.
