The Border House gaming blog has an entry about the chosen FemShep. Thought I'd share, since we all seem to be in a link sharing mood this past week:

Edit:  Kotaku gives a nod to Sage's "Many Faces of FemShep" video: kotaku.com/5826908/the-many-faces-of-commander-shepard-kickass-space+lady :kissing:

Is it wrong that I'm such a Paragon that I just want to tell al-Jilani to stuff it in a very satisfying manner again?

Nah. I find it much more satifying to verbally b*tch-slap her. The only thing that could make it better are if you could somehow combine both the paragon speech and the renegade speech to her in ME2 into one single speech.
B)

Why punch her when you can simply humiliate her and look the bada** awesome hero? :wizard:

Out of curiosity, which face # did you use for her?

I was playing around with this nose earlier today with Face #7 but couldn't quite get the features to mesh together right.  I was wondering if this was Face #1 or something instead?

Ah, thanks!  I'll just have to fiddle around in the CC some more.  I am determined to create a face for that nose for some reason.

Heh. I'll break 300 hours in ME2 by the time I finish my current play-through, which is my official canon play-through for Artemis... which I haven't played in a long time, but at least there's plenty of time to get through it by the time ME3 comes out. :?

Sitting at 278 hours right now.^_^

344 hours in ME1, though.

Women like choices. Games like Sims, Farmville, and Cityville are very popular with the ladies. They offer a level of personalization that men (typically) don't demand in their games.

Showing the average Sims/Farmville player that s/he can change Shepard's hair color/style is not going to make them buy a game like Mass Effect.

Did you watch Sage's video that I posted? A lot more than hair color/style was changed in that trailer...

If not, then you and I can continue this debate in private so that I can explain how marketing works, especially with minority groups (including women).

It seems like most people have totally lost the point of why anybody wanted something like this in the first place, it wasn't to make some statement against Western standards of beauty or start some media revolution. It was to make clear that the female Commander Shepard was just as valid an option as the male counterpart and others (both male and female) should try it.

This.

In fact, before BW decided to present 6 options and let the fandom vote, one of the devs actually tweeted in response to someone asking for a darker skinned FemShep saying that FemShep would be caucasian.  Apparently they changed their minds and decided to let the fandom vote, but pushing the envelope about beauty standards or whatever was never on the agenda.

I'm going to be honest here for a moment...these kinds of statements read as dismissive and are somewhat hurtful.  If the point is that female Shepard is just as valid as male Shepard then why couldn't the point also be that white Shepard is just as viable as a Shepard of a different ethnicity? Does gender trump race?  Was gender never the point in the why's and the how's of market focus?  If supporters of FemShep were not pushing for equality in that regard then why bother after all?  I just don't see how you can make those kinds of statements without understanding why someone might object to them.  It comes across as hypocritical, and I can't help but feel that these statements seem to miss the point of what people were angling for in the first place.

Images matter, whether we like to admit it or not.  They tell a story about culture and if the predominant imagery reflects one group ideally more than the other it colors a great many things.  I am both a person of color and a woman.  I support FemShep.  I didn't vote for blonde FemShep, but I still support her.  I don't think that blondes are incapable or ditzy or barbie or any of that other nonsense.  The people who say that don't reflect my viewpoint and I don't want to be grouped with them in any way, shape or form.  But I do not agree with the contention that vocalizing a slight disappointment in the voting populace and furthermore, critiquing the cultural implications of blonde FemShep means that my experience and that my ideas about the debate are "asinine" or "silly."

Also, because Bioware changed their mind about creating three FemSheps who are women of color, I'm supposed to be happy?  It reaks of tokenism if that's that case and that sort of assertion makes me uncomfortable.
