It seems like most people have totally lost the point of why anybody wanted something like this in the first place, it wasn't to make some statement against Western standards of beauty or start some media revolution. It was to make clear that the female Commander Shepard was just as valid an option as the male counterpart and others (both male and female) should try it.
This.
In fact, before BW decided to present 6 options and let the fandom vote, one of the devs actually tweeted in response to someone asking for a darker skinned FemShep saying that FemShep would be caucasian. Apparently they changed their minds and decided to let the fandom vote, but pushing the envelope about beauty standards or whatever was never on the agenda.
I'm going to be honest here for a moment...these kinds of statements read as dismissive and are somewhat hurtful. If the point is that female Shepard is just as valid as male Shepard then why couldn't the point also be that white Shepard is just as viable as a Shepard of a different ethnicity? Does gender trump race? Was gender never the point in the why's and the how's of market focus? If supporters of FemShep were not pushing for equality in that regard then why bother after all? I just don't see how you can make those kinds of statements without understanding why someone might object to them. It comes across as hypocritical, and I can't help but feel that these statements seem to miss the point of what people were angling for in the first place.
Images matter, whether we like to admit it or not. They tell a story about culture and if the predominant imagery reflects one group ideally more than the other it colors a great many things. I am both a person of color and a woman. I support FemShep. I didn't vote for blonde FemShep, but I still support her. I don't think that blondes are incapable or ditzy or barbie or any of that other nonsense. The people who say that don't reflect my viewpoint and I don't want to be grouped with them in any way, shape or form. But I do not agree with the contention that vocalizing a slight disappointment in the voting populace and furthermore, critiquing the cultural implications of blonde FemShep means that my experience and that my ideas about the debate are "asinine" or "silly."
Also, because Bioware changed their mind about creating three FemSheps who are women of color, I'm supposed to be happy? It reaks of tokenism if that's that case and that sort of assertion makes me uncomfortable.
What Adneate and Leggy Willow are trying to say is:
"Hey guys! We see no problem so there is no problem! Really!
Stop being so silly, what with your social critiques and discussion of beauty standards and minority representation and whatever. LoL"
