I love playing and creating characters and almost never play myself in a game. The one recent exception was a male City Elf in DA:O. He was an avatar. But the thing about characters is that they don't come out of thin air. With UJ, I had something in mind before I started the game, but as Tup pointed out the lore, story and even the look of the Shepard can have a huge impact on how the character eventually develops. As Ottemis pointed out, basing a character on someone you know is a great step in character creation. Erica, my renegade, was loosely based on an ornery old aunt of mine. She was tough, hard working and always spoke her mind. I threw in a little "Ashley lite" and Erica was born. The game did the rest. My current renegade manShep is a little more problematic as I'm not crazy about the voice either, but it's been interesting playing w/ that limitation and I've got a fully fleshed out character out of it. The guy is a no nonsense, "get the job done and go home" sort of fellow. He treats his crew fairly but is distant w/ them (except for the ladies and then that's just for sex). Originally I wanted to go for a James Bond persona, but the voice just wasn't right for that, so I went for Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" but ended up w/ a Clint Eastwood "Man w/ No Name" persona. A lesser evil, you might say.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

I made a FemShep/Mass Effect tribute video, if anyone's interested. Be gentle. It's my first try at anything like this ever.

I've tried Sheploo/manshep but it doesn't grab me enough to push through to the end.

Perhaps it's a little of this. I can instinctively play a male character, but RPing a female is a lot harder. Or rather a female living in the same galaxy as I do.

Anybody else had problems getting 'in character' for specific iterations of Shepards? How'd you solve it?

I had some trouble with my DudeShep as well. I guess the moment I was successful at it was the moment I really went at it with a plan: I decided, I am going to make the kind of male character that I would either want to befriend or set up with a friend.

I chose red hair and green eyes; a rugged face with a somewhat large nose with a thin bridge. I avoided making him either cro-magnon or boyish, instead focusing on making him look manly in a gentle way. But I think what really worked is that I decided he would be a real boy scout with a soft heart, a Paragon to the core instead of the pragmatic Paragade that my main FemShep is, and it would be an endearing combination virtue/flaw which set him aside from the stereotypes of male soldiers in some fiction.

Pretty much all the soldiers I've known in my life were steel hiding glass. Really hard on the outside, but inside just waiting for someone to make it safe for them to feel again. Those who'd dealt with their fear of opening their hearts were stronger, precisely because they wouldn't let themselves be afraid to be gentle and let their feelings show when it was the right time. I decided Torran was the "dealt with it" type, forced to cope with extreme circumstances and become highly emotionally resilient after what happened on Mindoir in order to be able to join the military, and the emotional strength he'd developed there was why he became who he is.

I also looked at the female characters that I loved the best--Ashley and later Jack, and that helped. Rather than looking at my playthrough like I had to pretend to be a male--which would've been awkward and unpleasant--I tried to think like a writer or a friend, setting two beloved characters up with a great guy who would appreciate and respect them. I had planned for him to remain faithful, but after Ashley broke his heart on Horizon, he fell for Jack really hard. The more she pushed, the more determined he was to be the one person who wouldn't let her down no matter what. It will be interesting to see what he does in ME3.

I guess that's what did it for me. If you create a character you feel that you understand and can identify with, someone who reminds you of a person of the opposite sex that you know or that you would very much like to meet, then you can stick with them because you want to see where their story goes. You just have to know their struggles and issues--know who they are, and enjoy them for that.

I just finished reading this article and wow, it's a must read for any femShep fan.  Really.  Highlights include how voice acting works including Hale's own approach, how she is frustrated that Shepard is constantly referred to as a man (including certain lead writers directing her), and how a line of dialogue w/ a character known as A/K is handled. Description of Hale playing femShep in ME2 is hilarious.  There’s also personal background on her.  All in all, the article is very informative, inspiring, and for some reason I can’t point my finger on, a little sad.

Really good read, and extra nice to see femShep in the mainstream media. I only wish I could get the New Yorker over here so I could keep a copy for posterity.

The article does confirm that Shepard will show "his/her frailty" and be "a real character" "even though not every player will choose to experience that."

Fascinating article--thank you for sharing that. A four-hour session with at least TWENTY more to go... holy crap, I will never look at Mark Meer the same way again! I still prefer JH overall, but if he gets fatigued sometimes, it's no wonder. I know voice is hard--I've done it before, non-professionally for a number of fanmade Thief missions--but I could work on my own schedule. A four-hour session has to be grueling, to say the least.

I know what you mean about it being oddly sad. This attention is coming to her so late, and it's still not what it should be. FemShep just hasn't been in the limelight. Maybe that will change. I certainly hope so.

And that's why I always used the commands to lead them into rooms before I closed the doors. :)

This also bugged me in ME2 as well. Example: Haelstrom.

Henchmen: "Shepard my shields are fried" *die*

Femshep: "WELL WHY DON'T YOU MOVE AWAY FROM THE SUNLIGHT GENIUS?!!" <_<

I'm not a subscriber so I can't read the entire article, but it's always a pleasure to see more of Hale in interviews and such. :D From what little I read, though... 300 hours voicing Shepard? That's... a lot. o__o

Thanks for the link. I like how the author compares her to Meryl Streep.
Hale is awesome.
A few of my favourite lines in ME2 are so much better coming from her (i like Meer, too. Don't want to start the whole 'vs.' debate again):
- Let's spill a little merc blood!
- You heard the man on the radio! He needs direction!

Figured out what Heather's path will be: an even-handed paragade, seducing Liara. A quality making her human is that she's a horrible communicator.

Sometimes she says the right words, but screws up with her mimicry.

Posted Image
At other times, she plainly screws up, plus makes it worse by acting phlegm. At least she's honest.

Posted Image
But when it comes to following her heart, she's very confident at handling the situation.

Doing 4 hours a session too is interesting.   Its impressive how she and Meer both keep up consistancy over such a long period.

Very good read.  Well the snippet above the main article anyway

I love how they move up to that really big open bit outside of cover on their bloody own there, where the primes spawn I think? One of the biggest 'Doh' moments.

Agh, forgot to comment. Again. >__< I was meaning to, honest!

Love it! I really like the music you used; very high-energy. I especially liked the beacon scenes (they synced with the music especially well) and how you focused on the visions at one point. Also, your Shep looks stunning. ;D She's practically glowing.

Okay, that plus the screenshots really cracked me up. xD I like her already.

Yeah, it really is amazing. It must take a great deal of focus to keep their voice a certain way in segmented sessions, more so if they do voice work for other projects simultaneously. Mad props.
