Allow me to chip in a little in the femshep-marketing discussion.
They seriously left me baffled with their new direction. At first I thought it was a very clever move. Basically they have presented 6 options from which they could safely predict the winning one. As we all know, number 5 won miles ahead of the others. I'm not up to date on what portion of her voters had the addition that they wanted auburn hair, different eye colour, but I presume the majority was happy with her as she looks. So, it shouldn't have a big impact. Also, it's probably not a popular viewpoint, but I see the equality/beauty/stereotype and so on complaints as simple overreactive BS. And I don't mean British Standards.
Despite the unambiguous results, the marketing team are about to completely revise their decisions. This could be due to a number of reasons. It could mean, that they still don't have a crystal clear formulation on what the new default femshep will look like. Or, they get inconsistent directions from up above, ergo they have no concept whatsoever.
Another explanation, that I'm suspecting to be true, is that they are playing some sort of game with us poor folks. Feeding a bit of misinformation here, upsetting inflexible fans there. It works in the sense that people are constantly engaged in debates, keeping the topic hot. I almost never type more than a couple of lines, and now look at this... can't dispel their magic.
Well, I just threw my point of view out there. Please note that I'm quite neutral about the new female hero's design, as I will carry on with my ladies who have been through ME1 and ME2. However I find the phenomenon interesting, both from a business and a psychological aspect.
