Being in a minority is fine as long as you're not being labelled the minority thus unimportant by those that feel superior for belonging to the majority and suffer negative repercussions from it. Having said that 18%, or however much/big the base really is.. Nobody's opinion is less valid then that of another, it is just that, an opinion. In the case of male and female shep, percentages of the player base are often misused to 'put down' people that don't belong to the so called majority. This I personally have 0 respect for, which I'd think is logical.

P.S. sentinels had warp in ME1 too O_O I play my vanguards as biotic/combat hybrid , though granted, a lot of it has to do with bonus powers and my adoration for Shockwave, but still :P

I think you will find they did not.

I play on Insanity, so a Shockwave build is a lot harder to pull off. Not impossible, it still has its uses - Jakarta rolls Evi/Mattock with 3 Shockwave/Area Reave and I love playing her, she's totally brutal - but she's nowhere near as fast at level clears as Ingwe (whose only biotics are Charge and Slam). It's a fun build, but an objectively mechanically inferior one (as opposed to Varick, who's normally a caster sentinel all about Warp/Overload/CryoThrow who rarely even fires her gun, but who can clear a room equally well as an assault sentinel with a shotgun who spends every cooldown on tech armor).

This stat right here

"18 percent of everyone who plays Mass Effect plays it with a female character.”

I hate it. I hate when people mention it. I hate that people never take into account different variables. I want to burn with fire, lots and lots of fire.

I don't see what's so wrong with it. It's just a number, and numbers are neutral, meaning they have the significance you allow them to have.

It's more like it's annoying how it's used by people. Like for instance, Femshep shouldn't be used in the movie because of that stat. And femshep shouldn't be taking precious coverage away from maleshep because of that stat. It's like the go to stat of all the anti femshep people and it annoys me because there really isn't any context behind it.

On the plus side the fact they have marketed her now that figure is sure to increase. Additionally with all the feedback we have given regarding inconsistencies between the two genders I hope they spend more time resolving a lot of them. I am confident they will in light of recent events.

Just because there are less femshep players doesnt mean the quality of our playthrough should be inferior.

While it never hurts to be optimistic, I'll believe it when I see it.  Sorry, I'm just very cynical about ... well, everything.

While you may be right I find that BSN is far too cynical  :P

Be optimistic! Were getting a trailer and already have a new iconic femshep from nothing. Things can only get better :)

only bugs me if people use it as a justification for not wanting to make sure that femshep specific content is not polished up. otherwise? so what.

It's not that people are using it to justify not wanting FemShep content to be as polished as MaleShep's....FemShep content already isn't as polished as MaleShep's and it's being used to maintain that status quo.

woops O_o  I blame ME1's skill hud for confusing me.  that's my story and I'm sticking to it :P  yeah, I don't play on insanity so its a bit different for me, especialy since I end up picking abilities that suit each individual Shepard best, personalitywise.  but with vanguards its either ammo powers or biotics and to be honest, I'd rather abuse squadmates for ammo powers, just so that I have more biotic abilities to play around with.

@ Jib I understand.  I guess I'm just a lot more mellow about progress concering femshep at this point, concidering all the strides that have been made, and that captain Crash mentioned.  I'm more worried about the handling of some of the characters who don't have nearly the popularity of femshep and who inspire actual hate in people.  femshep might be in a minority, but she's loved, not hated.

All returning characters should get equal 'love' from the devs regardless of popularity, I agree.

The cynic in me thinks this won't happen, though.

the cynic in me agrees.  the cynic in me merely realizes that femshep at this point has it better then some of the returning characters, so I guess I'm trying to pick my battles? :)  I'm angry enough as it is :)

Quite frankly I couldn't care less what the percentages are. BioWare doesn't actually know anything about my playthroughs because I choose not to upload data to them. You'd be surprised (or not, actually) how many choose the default soldier male Shepard just because he happens to be the quick start Shepard. But anyway, it doesn't affect me at all that I belong in the 18%. I may and will belong in to many minority categories in real life but it's not a bad thing considering that many times what majority does is just stupid.

I think I'm done getting images of Riza becoming a freelancer for now. (Whoever said earlier that once you get the flycam it takes 10x as long to get through wasn't kidding. Hard to judge camera angles and I had to reload a bunch of times to get some of these.)

@JeweledLeah: I actually thought they did too even after playing Varick through ME1 one and a half times, up until I actually sat down and plotted out my plot/talent chioces for all my Sheps for both games (um... it's possible I have a small completionist problem). It really does seem like they should. I mean, Stasis, but no Warp? But ME1 sentinels were crowd controllers, not damagers.

ME2 sentinels are just a hot mess. Conceptually and balance-wise. I love you Varick but you're stupidly OP.

I'm not sure why being in a minority of players is such a big deal. all in all its not as much of a minority as, say fans of certain romances and yet, here's bioware still adding those romances in, even when numbers tells them that 3% or less of all the players enjoyed a particular subplot. why I prefer to play female characters whenever possible, femshep in particular is the first time I've ever encountered a phenomena where people wanted specific marketing for specific genders. to me, just marketing the fact that you CAN in fact customize your character in all ways, is more then enough. I don't mind trailers featuring default male.

I'm sure, some of the love also comes from protagonist being voiced, before characters just weren't as fleshed out without a voice, so it really didn't matter as much.

maybe its becasue I also happen to be a fan of some of the least beloved characters, i don't mind being in a minority so much. as long as said minority still exists in some way? /shrug.

lol, so true. hence why the kaidan fans, in particular, are so dedicated and oft-cynical. femshep players+virmire survior+it being the guy who was saved = "uh, we gonna get closure in ME3???"

it's no wonder certain fans get so paranoid. if i worked at bioware, i'd be a little scared of some of the fan base. well, actually, i am, and i'm a fan.

that stat does not make no sense when you look at how many more femsheps are out there compared to the male shep even on the face database plus every review blog I read always mentions femshep and hale preformace maybe the femshep players have turned off the send stats options

I'm not saying the stats aren't bogus, they may be, but the reason you see more femShep art, stories, even facecodes is because she is the fan favorite among those who really care about the game.   It is the passion of her fans that blurs the line.  I can’t tell you how many people on Twitter are astounded by those stats because everyone they know who plays the game has a femShep. That’s because femShep fans are more vocal, so you hear about her more. FemShep fans are more passionate about the character, so you see more art, fic, facecodes, mods, etc, etc. And had BW actually marketed her, I think she would still be the fan favorite.

You have to remember that actual fans are a very small percentage of who buys and plays the game.  There are tons of people who pick up the game just because they recognized the name, played through it once with a quick-start or default ManShep, and resold it to the videogame store a few days later (possibly not even finishing it, if the "50% didn't beat the game" stat is any indication).

The fans who actually play it multiple times and go online to join or form communities about it and have in-depth discussions about the characters and lore are a much, much smaller group.  Among that group I'd say they're split more or less evenly between ManShep and FemShep-preference, possibly leaning more towards FemShep (60-40, maybe).

I don't think Bioware pays a whole lot of attention to the stats.  I'm sure they consider it, but I remember one dev mentioning that stat about how only 50% even finished the game and joking that it didn't mean they weren't going to include an ending for Mass Effect 3 since only 50% of players would see it.

^ You can count me as one of those who never allows any game to link online just to send stats. Call me paranoid but I just don't like programs that do that. Even games from steam, I always block steam unless I really need to update or register a new game.

A while back, not long after we started femshep.com some of the members instigated a "talk like your femshep" weekend on the chat.  It was a lot of fun role playing the Shepards, but it kind of died out. One of the problems was that we only had one chat and some people didn't want to join in. Now, by request, we have a dedicated chat just for role play.  Call it crazy, call it kooky (maybe even ooky) but we have it.  It's up now, but we will have an official launch next weekend.
