Nice endgame smirk, Verly!
So here's a question. When you guys make a Shepard, how much do you integrate her class into her character?
Myself, I'm a great believer in the idea that "class" is a completely meta concept - nothing throws me out of a fic quite like a Shep being referred to as a "Vanguard" or whatever - and so from a roleplay standpoint, I generally think of an engineer, an infiltrator, or a soldier with Energy Drain/GSB as basically the same (a soldier with sophisticated electronics training).
But biotics seem like a really big deal to me. Per canon, there's a certain degree of discrimination associated with them, which would have to affect Shep's upbringing (heh, schizophrenic biotic lesbian of color Jakarta wins every Oppression Olympics ever XD), and even beyond that it really does seem to have an everyday impact on life. Biotics need to eat more, they need to ground themselves regularly so they don't shock people, they can presumably sense mass effect fields so even being on a moving spaceship would make them constantly aware of their abilities. To me the choice of "biotic or nonbiotic Shep" is as maybe even more important than history/psych profile (and as a result, nonbiotic Sheps never get biotic bonus powers).
But I've also seen people talk about running the same Shep through the game six times to try out all six classes and have no problem thinking of that as the same character every time. And on the other hand, I've seen people take all six class divisions as indicative of specialized training, such that to them, an engineer with a sniper as a bonus weapon automatically has a very different career and mental outlook than an infiltrator Shep.
So, just curious as to where most people here stand on the question.
(I have no pictures of a Biotic Shep being biotic on this hard drive, so have a Biotic Shep staring at a Biotic God instead.)
This is an incredibly interesting question, and one I've actually started to bring into my fics and "head canon" for my one femShep. I personally have this really weird mental block where I can't - just can't - see anyone but my original Shepard in ME/ME2 until I beat ME3 with her. So this class question has been something I've struggled with. I do find it hard to imagine Kaelia (my
one Shep) as anything other than a soldier, but I really,
really loved Slam as a bonus power in ME2.
I initially tried to do a playthrough with her, ignoring the ability out of combat, but I found it near impossible. My answer to that? ME -> ME2 class change explanation! When she died and her body was down on Alchera for a long time, she was exposed to eezo (since there are a bunch of eezo containers around on Alchera during the Normandy Tags quest). This infused her with latent biotic power that she summons forth at one point in the story, but because she's a 30 year old woman trying to learn biotics at much too "old" an age, all she can do is slam people into the ground at this point. She needs more practice than ME2 gives her time!
They've already stated you can change your class in ME3 with an import. So I'm really, really,
really hoping that if you change your class in ME3 (I'd love to get her to be a more rounded biotic, given the extra time she has to practice) that your original squadmates comment on it...namely Kaidan/Ashley. They weren't around to see you in combat, so what happened if you were a biotic and turned soldier in ME3? What if you spontaneously became a biotic when you were only a soldier in ME? I can imagine being pretty surprised if a friend that could/couldn't do that two years ago suddenly started doing/not doing those biotic moves!
Bah, I got sidetracked. Short answer for me is a resounding
yes. If I can't get some "head canon" explanation in at the least, my Shepard's personality/story needs to fit their class. I just can't meta that one away. It's as important to them as their background to me.
...Dang, I typed a lot. Here, have a picture of said Kaelia in apology. In my mind, this is shortly before she becomes biotic. Earthborn orphan Kaelia isn't too pleased that Thane admits he pretty much abandonded his son. <_<
