MainShep is a soldier, and I don't give her a bonus talent. She doesn't really get biotics (although she tries) and she doesn't have any technical aptitude whatsoever (I would have played her as an infiltrator, except having a luddite in a sci-fi story amused the hell out of me).

My first ME1 playthrough with Jakarta, she had Decryption as a bonus talent. Partly because I hadn't unlocked many other talents yet, partly because intellectual curiosity is one of her big personality markers with me, so I figured I could use it to represent Tali and Kaidan teaching her how to hack stuff (because she would definitely make them do that).
My second playthrough with Jakarta, I'd learned about the uber facerolling machine that is the Singularity vanguard, so I swapped Decryption out for Singularity.
Then ME2 happened. Now she takes Decryption again, because it drives me batty that she suddenly knows how to hack in ME2 if she couldn't in ME1. (The other option is to drag Kasumi and Garrus everywhere and pretend it's them doing it, which I sort of do anyway - they're Team BFF and synergize well with Jakarta's playstyle - but I varied my team a lot more in my first few ME2 playthroughs than I do nowadays. And I'm a roleplayer dammit, and Jakarta would want to learn how to hack.)

^ Team BFF prepares to strike a pose.
