Yeah i see the ''anime-ish'' face and that it's a bit wonky and that it's not a super realistic face. But that the face looks like a 14 year or even 12 year old? That i can't see at all but i guess we all see stuff in different ways

@Skald what you're not taking into account is that she's in motion, either she's been thrown back and is stopping/bracing herself or she's getting up from being knocked down. Hair has moved and her head has been down as she's looking up. It's still not anime or anime-ish also she's 29-31 based on how your femshep views her age she's in her prime, she's not ancient with wrinkles upon wrinkles, Femshep is also incredibly beautiful and in Goddess like shape. I'm pretty sure her regenerative abilities have her looking as best she can.

Somehow I think you've gotten the impression that I'm attacking FemShep. All I'm saying is this: Forget stylistic terminology -- I think the face (only the face) is very generic and has distorted proportions that make this depiction of FemShep look too young and not believable as Commander Shepard.

No big deal, though - I didn't mean to trigger strong reactions (I like to think we're all friends here) - and I understand and respect your perspective. It's not even clear that the artist INTENDED to create a realistic character depiction, so this is truly just an observation and a hope that the final FemShep will have more realistic and appropriate features.

Enid is giving me that "Would you just drop it?!" look, so moving on...

I'm talking about her face only, not her body.  Her face looks prepubescent.  And the facial proportions are what makes her anime-looking.  The eyes are far too wide-set for the bridge of the nose, and the mouth far too narrow for the eyes.  Spiky hair has nothing to do with it.

So that it doesn't get lost in the middle of the "anime" discussion:

This is a very nice mood shot. Has a "painterly" quality that's hard to capture.

Her body proportions are fine. She is just in a odd angle. Her head is tilted down making her forehead look bigger then her lips.

I think the picture looks pure badass. Patryk Garrett is easily one of best Mass Effect artists out there. I know I'm in no way anywhere close to his league, so I would never presume to criticize his work.

Posted Image

Also I don't hear anyone knocking Matt Rhodes for being too cartoony... And he was the concept artist for ME2 and DA2.

I'm pretty sure Garrett is the one who did the new Xbox Magazine cover.

Clearly not anime.

I happen to like the new female Shepard. Her freckles, her flaming red hair and those piercing green eyes. She looks like she could kick my ass 5 ways to next Tuesday.

Artistic style is artistic style. To be honest, she looks a bit like a few real life actresses to me. Women who have large eyes as a defining feature, such as Winona Ryder or Natalie Portman. 'Anime' is not the thought I had while looking at the new FemShep.

I also find it slightly offensive that people say 'she doesn't look old enough'. I happen to be FemShep's age (if you don't count the Lazarus years). Is it assumed when you hit the age 30 you are supposed to look like some kind of weathered hag? Isn't this also based in the future, where humans can live almost 150 years and genetic alterations run rampant?

Didn't this thread already go through a long drawn-out debate about all this during the voting process? I apologize for sounding irritated, but it's becoming a tad tiresome.

We all have our own personal Shepards, anyway.

That's what we're getting.  <3  Remember, that we could have gotten nothing.

I'm not uder the impression that you are attacking femshep, but you're not being reasonable about what you're saying. Agian shepard is 29-31. there are no visibly signs of being 29-31 Hell I know people who ARE in that age range and I istakenly thought they were my age. (the ripe old age of 21.)  being "Commander Shepard" has nothing to do with looks it's all about substance. and her substance is that she's in battle at the moment of the picture being "taken" and like Isaid earlier you're not taking into account that she's in motion, which distorts features in still shots. She's as realistic as the artist could make her,

I'm dropping the anime thing, but since I pretty much missed the whole BioWare FemShep vote, I just took a trip in the Wayback Machine and looked again at the six FemShep options people voted on a few months ago. Bear with me; I would have brought these things up back then if I'd been around.

Disclaimer: I'm happy that BioWare has made this significant effort and extremely pleased that FemShep is receiving long overdue attention. But concerning this vote, I just don't get it. Where was the choice? With just a couple of minor exceptions, all six FemSheps have the exact same face.

Posted Image

The obvious differences are skin tone, eye color, and hairstyle / color. Aside from those, the only differences are
  • Number 3 has a very slightly wider head at the temples
  • Number 4 has a slightly broader nose and slightly larger lips
In both these cases, the changes appear to have been aimed at introducing a couple of stereotypical ethnicity indicators.

Honest, non-rhetorical question: So what was the point? We were going to get the same face no matter which option got the most votes. The final green-eyed redhead result was purely cosmetic and independent of the face.

And one final comment: This thread's gotten significantly more "testy" since the last itme I was here. Are there certain topics that we can no longer discuss? Sheesh. I can get this kind of "no you are wrong and I'm not listening" reaction on any old thread.

Just sayin'...

It was pretty useless vote, media gimmick to be honest. It doesn't matter, though. I can pass those easily and move on. besides, I already have femShep.

I'm pretty sure it's just that you posted your opinion, which you are allowed to have, and the majority of those who posted afterwards disagreed.  What got everything all riled up was everyone not dropping it there.

Oh, yeah, and the little shot there at the end of your last post isn't going to help.

Femshep is who she is.  Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with the general consensus of "Can we agree to disagree?". Since I've been lurking (and that's a been pretty long time), this thread's been pretty civil for the most part, so let's just drop it. I'd hate it if the second I stop lurking and begin to participate, the thread begins to degrade into what most other forums are like.

I think it's a sign that we're all hungry for ME3....dammit Bioware! My Kyrah just wants to snuggle with Garrus some more and give the Reapers the ****slappin, tail-between-the-legs treatment they deserve! You know, the simple things in life!Posted Image

I understand what you're saying, but I've come to expect reasonable discussions here, which includes considering the points being made instead of just saying "no it isn't" with no respect for the opinion. I continued to respond in an attempt to clarify, not to continue a pointless argument. I realize we all have different perceptions based on a range of factors, and said so, but to be told I'm being unreasonable when I'm trying very hard to clarify is, frankly, difficult to understand. I continue when I get the impression that I must not be doing a good job of explaining myself, and I did stop when it was clear that wasn't helpful.

I suppose I suffer occasionally from an attack of that brand of unconscious arrogance that says "I'm sure that if I can just explain myself clearly, they will agree."

The parting shot was intentional, but wasn't intended to be mean-spirited. I miss the discussions. Screenies are great, and you all know I post my share, but I'd been lurking here for a while before resuming posts again, and I've been pretty surprised by some of the exchanges, and I think the result is just more screenies and less talking. This has been a place where I could always rely on people to be helpful and civil, but I've seen more lack of consideration and downright rudeness here than I used to. Maybe everyone is just tired of thinking of things to say and do while we wait for ME3 - I don't know.  But trust me -- when you've been away for a while then come back the difference is pretty obvious.

I do apologize to everyone for being tiresome. Before I brought up the anime observation I had looked back around the 1400 pages here (when the FB voting was announced) and didn't see a prior discussion about the characteristics of the new FemShep face. If I had I wouldn't have re-hashed it. I guess I missed it or stopped too soon or something.
Anyhoo... enough. Move along, folks. Nothing to see here.... :police:

Okay my thing about this BS argument is this, Who the flying fornication cares!?! I never played default Jane when ME1 came out, I didn't play her when ME2 came out, and I'm probably not going to play the new Jane. I can't in good conscience play a default character when there is a customizable opinion. I feel like I'm only playing part of the game if I don't make my own character. I might use Jane as a starting point when making a Shepard, but I have no Vanilla Jane Shepards.

The way everyone is going on about this, you would think we are all going to have to abandon our Shepards and be herded into playing her. She is only going to be on the box art of the COLLECTORS EDITION and the FemShep Trailer. Her presents will be in game and that. is. it. Honesty, what the hell did you guys want Bioware to do? Come into this thread and say "*Your Name here*!! Your Shepard is awesome! We will use your Shepard in our marketing!" No, they are going to use a silly vote to get everyone pumped and talking about FemShep. Isn't that what we have been asking for since the bloody beginning?! Now that she has attention all anyone can say is it not the kind of attention you want to see. If I was Silverman and I seen the load of whine that has spring from this I would say, if you are going to moan about it then you guys aren't going to get any choice next time. Its marketing, any marketing that gets people talking about a product is good marketing.

Yes, they could have use the original Jane, but why would they? She badly needed a textured upgrade like Sheploo and she needed that 'it' thing to make her more unique and iconic. Now I know someone is going to say "oh so you don't like Jane?" No I love Jane. I see this new Jane as a upgrade. She has the red hair, the green eyes, those awesome freckles, and that murder everyone look. So please for the love of GOD stop being this crap up. It makes us sound ungrateful and petty

The discussion seemed pretty civil to me. Why are people flying off the handle all of the sudden? It's not big deal, really, just chill out and bask in femSheppy goodness. At least we ARE discussing her, would it be better if the thread were as dead as the broShep thread?

The femshep thread moves along very well without a 'hey guys remember back in the summer when we had that vote? That was pretty stupid, right?"

I would much rather see, 'hey guys, what is your Shepard's weapon?' or 'Who does your Shepard trust most?' or 'What is your Shepard's favorite pudding?' Then criticizing the work of an artist, what a 30 year old woman should look like, and the continuation about a vote that is long past. Forgive me for wanting to hear positive discussions instead of the same old tired complaining.
