Sarah got her name from Sarah Kerrigan who's from the Starcraft universe. Kerrigan is by far my favorite character there and probably in any game except ME. They share more then their name, my Shepard also share a few personality traits from Kerrigan. That and i also just love the name.
Can also add how her name is pronounced, the name is pronounced in so many different ways depending on from where you come.
I say it something like this: Se-rah. In phonetic /ˈsɛərə/

Zody was almost Diana Shepard. Her looks are semi based on Diana of Themyscira aka Wonder Woman. I thought there might be dozens of Diana Shepards. Since Diana is the Roman name for Artemis. So I went to babynames.com and searched for cool names. Zody is an American name that is a combination of Zoe and Cody.

Well, one of my friends calls me "Jess" as a nickname all the time, to the point that I prefer hearing it instead of my real name as long as this friend is the only one who uses it.  It's not my name of course, but I've always been partial to the name Jessica.  When I was waffling around trying to nail down my Shep's face and name and everything else, I was firing off AIM messages to this friend about my difficulties and finally got the reply, "Why not just name her Jessica?"  To which I sat staring at the screen for a minute before thinking to myself, "Well, duh."  It was a natural fit.

I prefer short names with "sharp" sound, they have some energy in them, not sure how to explain it. Marge (sentinel), Ruth (infiltrator). So no special stories.
Nate (vanguard) was supposed to be rather boyish, for renegon Shep, approved by the FemShep chat btw :P
Dominica ('neer) was just an attempt of copying my face, so she got my second name.
There's also Kalina (Ca-lee-nah), adept, typical and girly eastern-slavic name, but she's an eternal W.I.P. and I had no inspiration to work on her, she's uh, pain around the cheeks :/

I just went with the default names Jane and John. But all those same named savegames started getting confusing, so this (the 'prefect' ME3 import playthroughs) iteration I went with my kids' names.

Kassia is pronounced \\ˈkə-shə\\ (as in "cuss") and not the more conventional \\ˈka-shə\\ (as in indeed "cassia").

Same.  Most of my FemSheps' names are shortened or nicknames.  I like the idea of short, strong names that I could hear being barked very quickly... FemShep just doesn't have time for a longer, fussier name. :P

Examples: Sadie, Evie, Delta, Kate, Jennie, Liz, Mel, Tess (and same thing for my ManSheps, who are Noah and Cole)

Well, I like Tiia (phonetic*: tiiɑ) as a name. It's something I could give to my daughter (if I ever will be blessed with one). My own name starts with 't' too so I guess I fancy that name because of that too. Also it's short and simple.

*Finnish - damn easy language to read. Understanding, writing and speaking is completely different thing, though.

I like your drawing. i like drawing in general. how do you post them? What is the theme behind yours?
Deirdre was originally my canon. I lost the data along with 4 others of my femshep. I had Katherine as a backup because she has the same background. I did recreate Deirdre but with a different bio.  I was inspired by a saxo player ( Deidre ) who was in her 80's when i first discovered her. I added the "r" ( both names are  very common ) cause i wanted a little more weight to it. Katherine was inspired by the *royalty ( and the actress Catherine Deneuve ) ; Kate's the shorter version of Katherine; Siobhan is named after a singer ( Siobhan Fahey ) and because of it's french translation ( Jeanne ); Jane is inspired by Demi Moore character in GI Jane; Sheploo Kristian after a family member.

*I'm not a big fan of royalties; i just like the fact that she was a "commoner" first.

With Jane I got lazy, being the first I just clicked past it thinking it was fine. Laire and Raine are named as they are because I like names that sound like actual words for things? I also like guy's names on girls or names that can apply to both genders, so I've got things like Devan, Joe, Sam, Taylor.
Some were named because I asked some people from here to think of names too =)

And I've always liked Core and Code, hence Code Shep.
For the dudes they're just names I like, Deacen, Dave (because he eats rock and sh*ts dynamite).

By the way, Raine is very common Finnish male name. ;)

Jolene is named after Jolene Blalock, who played T'Pol in Star Trek Enterprise, which is one of my favorite characters from the show. I also like the name of course. :>

I decided to make a Shepard who looked Scots-Irish, which is my heratige, and didn't want one that looked like your typical "rawr, kill kill, smash" space marine (I had just played the GoW campain and was sick of that)

After I had her looks down (I always do the appearance, then name) I started thinking of what kind of name would fit. Since she was Scots-Irish, I figured a Celtic name would work well. I looked up Celtic dieties, developed a rough personality that fit her looks, and the goddess Damara jumped out.

Most lists have Damara simply as a fertility goddess, however the actual belief was that she was one of many goddesses of love, fertility and childhood. Which fit the character I was developing for Mara, since she's childish, has this innocent look and is very loving. Her parents picked this name in the hopes she'd live up to the legend and beliefs. In retrospect, they probably should've picked Eris (Goddess of mischief)

In other words, I put way to much thought into Mara's name. My next Shepard is going to be a Steve. :D

I do the same. Everything about my Shepard has to make sense down to the smallest details. Even the people or things that inspire her name. That's what makes her so special; that's why i'm so attached to her.

I already knew that Aki was half-Japanese before I named her, so I went looking for female Japanese names on the interwebs. Coming across the name "Aki" reminded me of Dr. Ross from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, who has a similiar vibe to what I'd already decided on for my Shep, so that pretty much sealed the deal.

By complete coincidence, I discovered later that Ming Na, the actress who voiced Aki Ross, looks fairly similiar to Aki Shepard (at least, as similiar as invented videogame characters ever look to real people!) and I've used pictures of her as the basis of more than one photomanip...kismet!

Aki is also very, very common Finnish male name. B)

It's interesting how these name things vary between languages. In fact it wouldn't be possible to give name Raine or Aki to a girl here in Finland.

It varies from decade to decade but here are some current statistics:

Top ten (2011 and basically the same in 2010):
Maria
Sofia
Emilia
Olivia
Aino
Amanda
Matilda
Helmi
Aurora
Ilona

All time top ten:
Maria
Helena
Johanna
Anneli
Kaarina
Marjatta
Anna
Liisa
Annikki
Hannele

Most common names are rather standard stuff. The ones that aren't in top ten are more interesting in my opinion.

It just proves how absolutely incompetent ME3's marketing has been. The game is a couple months away for heaven's sake and we've barely seen anything.

When your fans get more excited at leaked footage of your game than what you've actually shown, then something is definitely wrong with the way you're marketing said game. It goes without saying that the marketing team has and never had any idea as to what they want to do.

I'm done chasing a ******* mirage.

@Jaime: Well, that happens.

As for the name question, I just kind of chose Renee at random, and it sounded nice as well. I was also wanting to use the accents available on the Xbox typepad. Nimue is slightly based on David Weber's Nimue Alban, Lt. Cdr, TFN, and my most recent one, is kind of named after no one in particular.

I won't be surprised if they don't show it till like a few days before ME3, like they did with femshep pics for ME2.

*sigh* You think they would have learn from DA2 and how they handled Malehawke and Ladyhawke, sure she never got a trailer but she got alot of exposure, a whole month just for her and one of the live streams from Bioware was with Mike playing Ladyhawke.

Another fail to the ME team.
