Feel free to elaborate on why you don't like the new generic femshep if you like. i'm listening ( reading ).
I'll try.
I actually don't dislike her. I don't like her. I feel nothing about her at all, really, which I suppose is what I'm saying.
Default Jane was my placeholder: she was the gal that popped up every time I hit the CC and tried to perfect my *own* Shep's look. I never used her, but I kind of got used to seeing her as 'that shepard gal'. i was sad her design did not seem as well-thought-out as male shep. she always struck me as a little too, um, 'forgetable' is the word i want to use. she didn't have the oomph i wanted. but she WAS jane all those years.
MyShep is my own (<--not sure I like that abbreviation, but there it is). In my case, that's Kyrie, and I'm growing fonder of my renegade alt, too. But MySheps are mine. I'm never going to see them on a cover. No one is going to know them but me and perhaps the people I share them with might care to know them. But I really don't care if they ever get recognized. What I *do* care about is that there is enough RPG in the bioware games for me to flesh them as characters and enough and graphic design goodness to make their looks a good counterpart to their personalities.
^Since NONE of that will ever translate to a marketing blip or a trailer or whatever, I don't pay much attention to the marketing. I read a Kotaku article that pointed out what's best about bioware games NEVER translates into their trailers. it's the hidden stuff you could never market or even explain to non-fans that I
adore (mordin singing gilber and sullivan; bullrushing al-jilani at last).
So no matter what shep they pick as poster girl, It's not shepard to me. not really.
Custom Sheps are often amazing. Even if I like my shep best, and her story *is* shep's story to me, there are so many awesome custom fan creations - ESPECIALLY for femshep, who never really had a sheploo-type following of the default jane. As i peruse the galleries of femsheps, deviantart, and yes, even playing a bunch of these gals in recording that femshep vid, it struck me how much care and love went into the development of those femsheps. their personalities informed their graphic design: they were
painstakingly crafted in the limited CC over dozens of playthroughs in some cases. the time and effort shows. each of them ARE femshep - they are a take on the woman that femshep might be and how the galaxy shapes around her. it's written on their faces, and it really, REALLY shows.
NewShep was designed by committee. (like a camel) No, not even that. She was picked by hordes of people - many of whom do not even PLAY as femshep. many of them were men who openly said things like 'she's hot' and 'i'd hit that.' when voting. then the outrage was that the blonde, fair shep won the first vote (the horrors!) and since that was too barbie-like and not soldierly enough (and really, what did we expect given the comments of many people voting) a re-vote was held to determine coloring. hence we pull back to redhair/greeneyes defaultish jane.
now, don't get me wrong. new jane does look good. only, frankly, she should have gotten this attention from a design team years ago and NOT have been subjected to a vote.
That is my opinion. I am not trying to say the result is not a nice-looking shep. I am also THRILLED at some recognition for femshep. Only a vote-in beauty contest, on facebook, voted by people who largely would rather 'nail' femshep than play as her or acknowledge her as a legitimate version of shepard. well, frankly, the whole thing left me thinking... Meh.
It's amazing femshep is getting recognition at all, given how sci-fi shooter games usually market women. But still, it was hardly the great step forward for women protagonists in video games that it could have been.
Also, the resulting fan art - the one where NewShep is falling back on her butt - well, i wasn't so impressed.

She looks hurt and pissed off. It's hardly the 'I'm always standing and I never fall look at how many guns i have' image that Sheploo always projects. Think about it: you put Sheploo in that pose and he'd look like a wuss. Put femshep in and it's...sexy? Bah.
So, there. that's my 2 cents/five bucks, whatever.
I don't dislike HER, but I was less than blown away by the progressive manner in which she was spawned. I was not a huge fan of default jane from before, but neither did I dislike her.
In short, this new jane is not shep to me. All the custom femsheps are. And to me, MyShep is always the 'real' Shepard.
