I really need to start my final ME1+2 playthrough with Jessica to get her geared up for ME3. Surprisingly, I'm not excited for ME3 like I thought I'd be, it's just this quietly building anticipation; like getting ready to go on a trip to visit an old friend you haven't seen for a while. I think that's probably an indicator of how unique Shepard is among game characters, that she feels like a real person.
This. Exactly.
After having just played through Skyrim (well, as much as you can ever "play through" Skyrim...) with a lovely and strong, but mute, expressionless, personality-less female Dragonborn, the truth of that is even more striking. I made her LOOK like a real person (and hey -- no duck lips -- the CC in Skyrim is crack!), but that didn't get me very far. I found myself constantly muttering Femshep-like dialogue under my breath as I played to try to compensate, but it just didn't work.
Just another pretty face...
I think that's probably a Bethesda thing, and possibly an open-world thing, more than it is a mute-PC thing. Dragon Age Origins had a classic mute-PC and it made me cry at the end because I loved the characters so much. My mage Warden had a brief experimental romance with Leliana, fell way in love with Alistair, didn't trust Morrigan with her Darkspawn-child idea at all, so she chose the ultimate sacrifice... and it was just wrenching. A text-only interface can be very powerful if done right, one can go back as far as Baldur's Gate and Planescape:Torment to see that.
I'm not saying that femShep would be just as powerful a character if she was unvoiced, there's no question that Jeniffer Hale's sterling performance is a huge part of her on-screen presence. But it also needs good character writing to carry it forward.
edit: Eep! ToPShep! I think starting 1701 (the registry number of a certain famous starship) deserves a Never-Before-Seen Jessica screenie.
