Here's a quick render of something I sank maybe 6 hours into this weekend:

I extracted the stock meshes from Mass Effect 2 using a tool called umodel, stripped their skeletons and performed other minor shenanigans in Milkshape, and then dumped everything into Carrara. That's not quite the end of the story though. The vanilla diffuse textures required some serious GIMP luvin'; they were a sort of baseline, starchy white.
I'm in the middle of rigging this monster right now. Weighting wertexes to wirtual bones is pretty much an entirely new and somewhat painful experience for me; we'll see how it goes. Somebody might have to talk me down from the side of a bridge before all is said and done. Ah am determined!

Ack. Sorry. More succinctly, these are the tools I used:
1. umodel to extract stock meshes from Mass Effect 2 packages
2. MilkShape to strip the extracted meshes down to bare essentials and to then export them to
3. Carrara for rigging + rendering
4. GIMP for texture tweaks

Having console'd my ME1 squad, Shepard included, to carry invisible versions of weapons they have no skill in - makes the light armor types stand out a lot more - the "cutscene assault rifle" problem is particularly vexing. It's hard to get a decent screenshot when everybody's miming holding assault rifles like it's an improv class.
