Having played several times through as both genders of Shep, I do prefer Hale's voice acting.

yeah Gus Mastrapa shouldn't be a journalist with such a subjective and frankly lazy critique of mark meer.
Honestly Gus I find your critique style to be boring and lazy and I think you do journalisim and critiquing wrong.

Hell see.. I could do his job with the amount of effort I put into that..

Doin it wrong.... *shakes head* idiot.

Why so serious everyone?  The title likely wasn't aimed as an insult, just a really poor heavy handed attempt at humor.  I disagree though, nothing wrong with ManShep.  People like one or the other based on personal preference.

That is an argument that will never be won because with voice acting of this caliber preference is subjective.  Person A: FemShep sounds too manly vs Person B: FemShep doesn't sound authoritative enough (I guess not manly enough?)  You can't please em all.  And some people will never be happy with a female voicing Shepard, regardless of how it's done.

Best part of that "article" was this user comment

I go both ways.
I mean, I do both Shepards.
No, wait, I mean I’ve tried them both out. Not like at the same time or anything, but one after the other. To see which I liked better.
This isn’t sounding any better the more I type.

Snerk.

Hello FemShep thread.

This is my first post so I'd thought I'd state my reasons.

1.Jennifer Hale-Because......well she's Jennifer Hale, I don't really think any further explanation is needed.

2. I also love the "badass female warrior" archetype.

3. Did I mention Jennifer Hale?

Well my Femshep is somewhat similar in aspect to what I would be if female (Well in a few years once I''ve joined the armed forces), so we'd just be sitting there making sarcastic comments and shooting crap before... well I'll leave the rest up to you :pinched::whistle:

I thought the Gamasutra article was way better because it was actually a fairly thoughtful analysis instead of whatever the wired.com article was supposed to be. Maybe it was supposed to be funny and since we don't know the writer we didn't get the joke or maybe it was just a divisive title to drive page views, mission accomplished in that case. You could make a convincing argument on why a Female Commander Shepard is the stronger character but that would require an in depth discussion of gender issues in modern western media. Which is probably something more suited to a university environment than say a gaming blog.

I tend to prefer the voice acting of femShep. I find maleShep to lack emotional engagement. I have several Shepards of both genders, about half-half. Mainly, its because I think maleShep has more interesting romance options than femShep. Otherwise, I think I would only have one or two maleSheps.

I think it sucks that maleShep is the poster boy of the ME franchise. FemShep doesn't even have the highly detailed look of maleShep or unique body language. She should at least be showcased in some of the screenshots, online vids, mobile wallpapers, and desktop wallpapers.

I was happy with the article that came out recently. It did a fairly good job describing the gripes fans have about the details neglected for femShep.

One thing I really love about Jennifer Hale's voice acting it that she can deliver a joke pretty well. FemShep comes off as having a dry wit that her male counterpart lacks. I'm not saying I don't like Meer too, I've seen his improv and he definitely has comedic timing, I just think the voice he chose doesn't lend itself to cracking jokes.

Now I like FemShep and Hale as much as the next guy, but ManShep and Meer get way too much criticism on these forums - and in that article. I'm not singling anyone or any thread out, but hear me out:

* The whole Meer versus Hale argument is one of personal preference. Every time someone says one of them "sucks", Jack tortures a puppy.
* Which do I think is "better" then? Well, it depends. Meer's delivery, often derided as bland or stale or flat, is none of those things. It is consistent. If you choose a Paragon option and then a Renegade option in sequence, they sound like they're coming from the same person. If you consistently pick one - say 100% Paragon - then Meer won't seem nearly as emotive as Hale. Hale's delivery is more emotional - the positives of such a style are obvious, but the negatives aren't - and when you are inconsistent on Paragon and Renegade with FemShep, she seems like she has multiple personalities they're so dramatically different. So my preference would be if I'm being consistent, Hale, if I'm not, Meer. Inconsistent Hale is too jarring. Consistent Meer is too boring.
* As a follow up, sometimes FemSheps fans can get rather - what's the word - militant. And that's kind of annoying, but part of me can understand why, given the lack of strong female protagonists like FemShep in media - but people who play with or prefer ManShep are not chest-pounding Neanderthals.

You seem to contradict yourself there. You say Meer is flat and that as a result Renegade and Paragon are the same tone keeping him the same.  Which you like but don't at the same time.  But by Hale putting some effort in for dramatic effect with Paragon and Renegade those decisions are too diverse and you don't like that variation? What do you want? The same flat tone with all decisions or change of attitude depending on if the situation is one of a paragon or a renegade?

um. my annoyance comes from the fact that femshep was completely left out of marketing materials. i want to see what i will be playing. i want to know what it will sound and look like.

and most importantly i want to know if there is an opportunity to play as a woman at all. i already typed it some 100+pages back that i didn't even know there was a choice of gender in ME1 and i wasn't too willing to play it exactly for that reason.

so this is why i get vocal (and yes, sometimes overly vocal) on this matter. i don't care about maleshep and i never on him or his voice acting. i guess i am not the only one with that reasoning, but people tend to throw other people into generalized categories, so what can you do, now i'm obsessed femshep fan

Edit: and i have to say that Hale's overly dramatic delivery irritates me very often, for the most part in ME2. both she and Meer have their moments, but all in all they seem pretty much equual to me

@Akodo: That expression is made of six kinds of win.

@Upsetting shorts: I would actually agree with your first point, and I'm sure you'll find many people in this thread who do as well. On your second point I wouldn't say that Meer is merely consistent. He is very flat in his delivery, but not just in tone but also with inflection. Most of the lines do sound like they were written to be spoken with a bit of emotion behind them, so when he doesn't deliver it does raise eyebrows. I agree that Hale is a lot more diverse in her delivery, but at least you get the sense that it's supposed to be that way.

I don't know if I'd call us militant fans, though. I just happen to think femShep is the better character and will happily debate the issue with anyone who disagrees. Part of ManShep's unpopularity also stems not just from Meer but from Sheploo - that ruggedly handsome, buzzcut space manly-man we've seen a million times before in a million other works of fiction. His design is a marketer's dream but unfortunately by being that, he is so much of a visual stereotype that he just becomes wholly uninteresting, at least to me.

I'm intrigued. Can you explain why this is so?

There are no great changes in their dialogues or options, are there? I would have thought that there is no greater difference in the character of a female Shepard than there would be for my custom male Shepard when compared with the default male found on the adverts.

@Upsettingshorts: I agree with you that Meer is unfairly maligned and I hope my earlier post didn't come off as Meer-bashing. For what it's worth I like Meer and I enjoyed everyplaythrough with his voice. His delivery of the "This is.. this is green" line was perfect and had me falling out of my chair. This may seem like small praise, but I'm a Trekkie and it matters to me. Meer also deserves credit for using a voice that's very far removed from his regular speaking voice.

I don't think Meer is flat. I think he undersells the lines - compared with Hale - and thus maintains a more consistent character. He's flatter not flat.

As far as marketing goes, I'm not sure how they could do it given they didn't hire a female model to be default FemShep (I nominate Carla Ossa - SFW - 6'0" of hotness). If they did that, I'd be all for having FemShep in marketing. But given that almost everyone's version is different...

It's a different issue than preference really. Marketing consistency comes into it. Stuff I don't claim to understand.

Oh and one last thing, I didn't mean to imply that all FemShep fans are always militant - just that some FemShep fans are sometimes militant.

i would have preferred if they avoided showing the main character at all, like it was done in KOTOR, BG and a lot of other BW games. but it's probably not so easy with Mass Effect.
ahm, i actually don't care 'bout ME marketing. i can live with Sheploo on every poster. i just don't like that this femshep-manshep fight has grown into such a big issue

The Meer VS Hale discussion never goes anywhere good.  If this gets out of hand, I suggest taking the discussion to the group.  ;)

We're militant fans?  Well I only think that's the case because FemShep is almost a well-kept secret.  Most of my friends had no idea you could play as female.  And if we're going to talk about voice acting, I'll only say that Hale is severely underappreciated for her fantastic work in this franchise.  Sure, she gets plenty of love from us, the fans but I think I would get an ulcer if we ever got to hear her voice an advertisement for Mass Effect.  Holy crap!
