Well, Kaidan's (or Ash's) message after Horizon was an olive branch of sorts. But you only get it if you romanced him in ME1.

Indeed.  It just feels too contrived, like they're trying to make the player dislike Kaidan/Ash for drama.  The dialogue just feels "off" to me.  Has Shep suffered brain damage?  Is there something going on with Kaidan (or Ash) that we don't know about?  Until it gets resolved, I'm just going to chalk it up to poor writing.

I might have to go back and actually play ME1 just to see why Ashley and Kaiden have any supporters. The encounter in ME2 makes me want to see if I can use Gibbed to have them both nuked in ME1.

i guess BW will get out of VS mess just as they did with Liara.

i don't mean to excuse them, crappy writing is crappy. but i can clearly see the idea behind that crappy writing, and i must say i like that idea. just as i saw the basic principle behind Liars's 'reconciliation' on Illium. poorly done, but understandable. and LotSB turned out exactly how i pictured it. so i'm not too worried about VS.

well, a little bit worried, but not too much

Ashley and Kaidan were nothing short of placeholders in ME2. And TZ pretty much nailed down my own feelings on the matter in her last post as well.

You should go back and play ME1 and see for yourself...they are both well-written characters.

The Horizon incident does neither of them justice.

They are both excellent, nuanced, intricate and well-written characters. The scene on Horizon does neither character justice at all, and the opinion of any individual that has yet to play ME1 regarding either character lacks credibility, to be honest.

Go for it. They're amazing characters in and of themselves.

I asked myself the same. Poor writing, poor animations - it just all adds up. The idea that was behind Horizon isn't bad, but the execution of it is just meh.

What really irks me about how Ashley and Kaidan have been treated in both games is that they both were created to subvert gender roles -- the sensitive, reserved magic user and healer (a role usually reserved for female characters in games) who is concerned about Shepard's state of mind, is a man, while the tough, brutally honest warrior who will get in Shepard's face if he/she gives her a hard time, is a woman -- and then you have to choose to kill one on Virmire.  So you're basically handing gamers who cannot stand "feminine" male characters or "masculine" female characters a way to violently get rid of them.  I understand that the writers felt it would have more impact to kill off a potential love interest or a friend who has been with you from the beginning of the game, but many people took Virmire as an indictment of either or both Kaidan and Ashley...if the writers actually liked them, wouldn't they keep them alive?

Then on Horizon, they took on a role, that, frankly, could have been filled by a generic Alliance soldier, and made the two characters seem interchangable in their reaction to Shepard.  Not only that, but it gave people who didn't ALREADY hate Kaidan and Ashley another reason to despise them, and new players were understandably peeved at this person they didn't know preaching at them.   I honestly wonder at this point if the writers themselves dislike the characters and want to get rid of them, or give them another dissatisfying cameo in ME3.

As someone who loves strong, independent female characters, I REALLY didn't like having to sacrifice Ashley on Virmire to save Kaidan.  If the Virmire Survivor's role in ME3 is similar to what they did in ME2, I'll feel even more that I'm being told that I was "wrong" to have cared for either character, and IMO, that's really bad storytelling.

I'd really like some sort of hint that I'm way off base here.  So far, there hasn't been any clues that I am.

Very well said!  These have been my thoughts on how I've seen most people treat the VS on these forums.  It annoys the hell out of me.  I'll post a "peeved" FemShep to illustrate my annoyance.

Your reaction boils down to reading my post in exactly the wrong way, then.

I come right out and say that I only have the ecounter in ME2 to go on, and state in effect that the presentation of both characters in ME1 almost has to be different for them to have as many fans as they do, and already two people have reemed me for it.

I don't understand this reaction.

Actually, we should be talking about FemShep in here. It's starting to get slightly heated over the VS. Perhaps we can include FemShep into the conversation of the Virmire Survivor???

since we won't see Kaidan in trailers (because he's, like, a femshep atribute), i won't get spoiled

Aw, that's true...no FemShep/Kaidan romance spoilers to worry about.

I hope they do give us at least a picture of him if there is to be some Ash/Kaidan DLC.

I wouldn't take it personally.  Your opinion is quite valid, but most people in these forums are quite attached to the ME1 squaddies.  I'd definitely check it out for yourself, it's a great game and will add to your enjoyment of the second.  I liked Kaidan in ME1, but frankly I had a moment of wishing I could nuke him too after Horizon.  There is also a lot of anti-VS sentiment around the forums, so you last sentence about said-nuking might be a sensitive issue for some people.

Also someone clearly peed in Mash's coffee today, so read all posts as sarcasm :)
Pssst hey.  Go watch some more dancing turian.  You're scaring off the locals.

Aye aye, cap'n.  My main gripe with VS isn't really with them, it's FemShep's crappy dialogue on Horizon.  Actually that's a main gripe for me.  FemShep talking to Jacob and FemShep on Horizon.  It's like she has a life of her own and I'm powerless to stop her.

I remember holding out for a few days on not watching the LotSB trailer.  I still managed to spoil myself and give into temptation but I remember thinking that I still had Jen Hale's voice acting to look forward to.  I couldn't wait to hear her voice the lines that Meer did in the trailer and she didn't disappoint.

Did you guys see the ShepWolf video on Youtube?
It's music from Shakira's "Shewolf," song, but it's filled with FemShep quips of her sounding sultry. Mostly from Jacob's romance, I think.
I couldn't believe how...seductive...FemShep could sound. o_O  I remember thinking, "Wow, that's the voice of my FemSheps who can kill salarians and batarians in cold blood?"

I've...stopped talking with Jacob in recent playthroughs (except to do his loyalty mission and to get the ship armor upgrade). I've heard all his dialog about 2 times already, so I just don't wanna go there again. Seriously, my Shepard is in no way sexually attracted to Jacob and would never in a million years flirt with him....why they have to force it, I don't know.

I think I've seen this. Is FemShep wearing a pair of fake bunnyears? I thought it was quite funny, and highlights the facepalm-worthy Jacob romance dialogue.

I'm in the same boat.

Of course, my MaleSheps don't talk to him much either, he's just not a very interesting character... and MaleShep, IIRC, has the same mannerisms as FemShep during those conversations...

Yes.

I think most of us were quite shocked when we encountered our FemSheps talking with Jacob?
I mean, really, as soon as she said, "I'm more interested in just talking for a bit," it sounded as if she was on the prowl, rather than on a professional ship.
I wonder what vocal directions Ms. Hale was given?

"Okay, Jennifer, this human biotic dude?  He's meant to be a replacement for Kaidan's romance in ME1."
"Okay...."
"So, we need you to sound as sultry as possible.  You know, just so gamers know he's available for FemSheps."
"But, what if they don't want to romance him?"
"Oh, they will.  Between the future meeting with Kaidan on Horizon, and two aliens?  He'll be the new interest.  Have Shepard be all over him."
"Okay...."

That's not true, but with how my FemShep acts with Jacob, and the ability to kiss and ask Shep how she's doing, it seems that way sometimes....
