Since I is a dude the latter, but not based on me.  ;)

Anyway, my main Shep is based on ...

My latest femshep is based off of me. I tried to make her look like I think I would (but failed) and have her make some choices I would make. But she still seems to take on more of a personality then I have.

My Shep is absolutely her own person. We may share a few personality traits like our dubious taste in men, but that's where the similarities end.
Most of the characters I create are very different from me. I'll only create an avatar of myself if it's for the purposes of, say, a self-parody. I can't stand self-inserts; to me it defeats the entire point of telling a story.

Nice pics, Ash. ^_^

As far as I'm concerned, FemShep looks totally badass in Kestrel armour. B)

As for Shep, well, I have 10 (6 FemSheps) of them. So I see them very much as their own characters, with traits or aspects of my own present, at best.

Again with the implied topless pics... where are these coming from and how do you do it?  I don't recognize this pose from any cinematic.  The lighting in this one is really good, too, looks like bright sunlight... the only place I can think of with lighting like it is Horizon, but the background looks like somewhere in the Normandy. Where is this?

Modding? And it's the bathroom ;p And sorry, I like when she looks vulnerable.

Okay, so you modded the character's outfit and the pose?  Or did you just happen to catch her in one of her stretching animations?  Does ME2 have a flycam or did you cram it against the wall?

That picture just really intrigues me because I have seen nowhere you could take anything like it anywhere in either game.  You must have really planned it out.

How people play their protagonists is always interesting. Too bad it almost always gets to flaming and questioning people's sexualities out of inability to understand, so the subject is typically better left avoided.

As my pic shows, I'm a dude. I'm also in a relationship with the most beautiful, kind, and uniquely weird personality of a woman in the world. Still, I practically always play females. Why? Because regardless of any game, PnP or PC RPG or whatever, my characters are never me. I've always thought of my motivations the same as some fantasy writer's. Think Ed Greenwood, and Elminster's Daughter, for instance. To me, male characters are ordinary. They're boring to look at, their personalities and base natures are simple and predictable, and they lack the sort of vulnerability I appreciate in a protagonist.

Now there are exceptions of course. My most memorable character is still a male, from BG2. But I live and breathe on that drama, vulnerability, and hidden strength of my characters. A female typically delivers all that far better than a male. It's a form of stereotype to be sure, but it works for me and that's enough.

Yes flycam and yes, captured one of her animations, it's impossible to set characters in any way (unless you have some 3d extracting tools, but never done that, don't know a thing about it). I got flycam from this place or here.
@Jib: I don't share my own mod, 'cause it's personalized for me, armor bonuses specified for one character of one class, just the few additional armors I like and so on. "Nekkid" is "wearable" as outfit.

Nah, I'm a screenshot junkie since Guild Wars, I just take a whole bunch of them, delete the bad ones, sometimes photoshop a little, it's nothing great, really.

Intro stuff

Full Name: Kira Eleanor Shepard

Posted Image

Background
: Colonist/Sole Survivor

Alignment: Paragon

class: Vanguard

Favorite Combat Ability or Abilities: Although she should be concentrating more on her biotic abilities, Kira recently hacked her way into using the M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle. Figuring no one will try and run in a Spectre, she doesn't see the harm. Nor does she consider her action particularly renegade, either, btw: when asked to save the universe, bureaucrats  should simply stay out of her face... and they do.

Decisions, decisions, decisions....

ME1 Council: Saved the Council, figuring humanity would benefit from it in the long run.

The Rachni: Released the Queen: they were victims of the Reapers just as every one else the Reapers used.

What happened on Feros?: Two casualties, Shiala was spared.

Virmire: Kaidan didn't make it out alive.

Conrad Verner: Mainly just avoided him.

Noveria: Helped Gianna Parasini, and was glad to assist her again on Ilium in ME2.

Bring Down the Sky: Shot Balak point-blank. Paragon or no, Kira's got exactly no stomach for outright scum.

Anderson or Udina: Anderson

ME1 Squad: Tali/Ashley/Liara

ME 2 Squad: Tali/Kasumi/Jack

ME2 and the Council: Got reinstated as a Spectre by the Council; though she realizes it's just a token title, she'll use what she can get.

The Collector Base: Destroyed it and told TIM to shove it.

Suicide Mission casualties: Jacob, Zaeed, Grunt

The Geth: Rewrote them.

Tali: Not exiled. Didn't hand over crucial evidence found on the Alerei, though. Honored Tali's request not to tarnish the reputation of her father. Although already dead, Kira deemed it in bad taste to kill him a second time.

Genophage cure data: Kept it.

Overlord: Set David free

Kasumi: Let her keep the greybox

Personal stuff

Romance: Liara in ME1. No one in ME2.

Why Shepard and her LI are such a great match: LI-ara was her love-interest in ME1. She almost immediately felt drawn to her. Two souls, both having lived a rather isolated life, it was a match waiting to happen. Refined and cultered as Liara was, she filled a void in Kira not easily otherwise catered to in her military career. Come ME2, however, things were different from the get-go. Liara had changed a lot. Mostly for the better, really. More mature. More resolute. Also a bit more obsessed, to be honest. This time around Kira didn't pursue a romantic relationship with her. Something seemed off. Perhaps Kira felt Liara was too preoccupied with her business affairs. Perhaps she saw Liara no longer really needed her (and therefore instinctively held her at bay, realizing it could never again be as it was before). Regardless, nothing came of it. While aboard the Normandy, Kira sought the flirtations of the begiling Ms. Chambers, which resulted in a nice 'dinner'. And though she wasn't romanatically interested in Jack, tried to help her as best as she could nonetheless. Still needing the company of old friends, she welcomed the opportunity to go recruit Tali, and was delighted to be in a position to really help out Tali later. Paragons receive a lot of love by giving it, you know.

Best Friends: Tali and Ashley. Being a sole survivor herself, Kira has always had great empathy for Tali and her people. She never sought a romantic relationship with her, but considers her more like a close sister. As such, she's always taken Tali under her wing, as it were, and carries a special place in her heart for this brave Quarian. Whenever Kira meets Tali she cannot help but be reminded of what it is to survive... and doing so with one's head held up. Tali's unbridled optimism and high-spirited way of being, despite the harsh living conditions of the Migrant Fleet, is a constant source of inspiration for Kira, who simply never ceases to be in awe of Tali's 'joie de vivre'.

Tali, in a way, is a representative of a race in trouble.  Whenever things get tough, and Kira feels the jackle awakening in her, and wants to take an outright renegade action, Tali is always in the back of her mind, reminding her of what it means to be a representative of your entire people. Quarians don't have huge fleets and firepower. Their kindness is really all they got.  And yet Tali is by no means a push-over. She gets what she wants for her people: just goes about it in a gentle way. As a result, Kira never forgets what profound repercusions one's actions can have with other races in the galaxy, and strives to represent humanity the best and most honorable way she can.

Kira never much liked Kaidan. Although she's come to respect him on a professional level, she foumd him inspiring to... nothing. Kira's feelings for him are best summed up quoting a small section of her Personal Journal, written the day after Virmire:

"Kaidan is gone. And I'm still unclear as to my feelings around him. On a bad day I've been know to say I don't trust a man who never swears. On a good day I simply found him lacking in leadership. Either way, for someone who spoke so little to the imagination, he managed to inspire us all the day he died, making the ultimate sacrifice, willingly and without hesitation, showing himself to be what he was above all: a model officer. And that's how I will choose to remember him."

Kira always felt good around Ashley, a typical WYSIWYG girl: no bull, no politics (both of which the universe has too much of, in Kira's eyes). Ashley always has your back, and she was simply fun to bring along (and fun is something this cr*phill 'verse has too little of, in Kira's eyes). Though no profound bond existed between the two, even Kira began to notice herself that, by the end of ME1, she almost always took Ashley along in her party.

Personality: Kira's grown quite a bit. She didn't exactly start out her life as a paragon. Kira grew up, occassionally given to bouts of rage; and though seen as very smart, was generally considered 'bossy' (which was really just her way of finding order in her life: a structure she finally found in the military). Later, when she ran into Talitha, the young fellow survivor of Mindoir, Kira realized, for the first time in a long time, how far she had come herself. Recalling the confusion and frustration of being a sole survivor (and being slightly triggered in the process), Kira grasped only all too well how things might have been entirely different for herself, given circumstances had been somewhat less favorable. She was able to talk down Talitha successfully, allowing her to begin her healing process. And that day assuredly brought a bit of closure for Kira herself as well.

Three fun facts: 1) Being rather disorganized and angry at a young age, Kira was considered 'Least likely to succeed' in 6th Grade. 2) Saw herself in a whole different light after watching Death Note. :P 3) Is good at saving entire galaxies, but tends to forget to feed her fish.

I didn't realise Liara was so popular till I read you guys' Shepard profiles? Most of you seem to pick Liara as your LI.
Is it just because Liara/FemShep = hawtness?

Nah. I love the chemistry, and genuine love, care and affection that develops between my Shepard and Liara. The fact that it is also a lesbian relationship is incidental. Liara also happens to be my favourite character by far, and would be the LI that I always romance regardless of any other s/s options.

Put simply, the fact that Liara is a F/F romance option has no bearing over my choice of her as my Shepard's LI at all.

i'm going to bed. Parting question: Do you think of FemShep as an Avatar or a Character or both?

Here's my thinking: To me, I made my femshep to be an avatar - basically a version of me in game. but ms. hale's vocal performance + the convo wheel thing means she ended up being her own character for me. i don't know if it was that Mr. Meer's performance was a little more avatar like for me - it faded into the background while ms. hale's did not or that i really had to think about why she would become the hero of the citadel. hale's performance has a lot of passion and humor to it...

anyhow - for you FemShep is an avatar (basically a cooler version of you) or a Character (her own person, though she might have been based on you at some point)

My FemSheps are all their own character.  I find it more fun to create a whole knew character (Shepard), detail their backstory/motivations/etc and add her into the universe along with all the others.  I don't like to play as myself...I'm boring =]

I think you have a good point about Hale...she's kind of made Shepard into her own character.

I'm going to point out that flycam based on the ME wiki did not work for me. I had to hack together some of what Akodo told me and some of what the wiki says to make it work on my machine. Maybe that's just me. Anyhow, I blogged how I did it in as much detail as I could manage.

Also, be sure to turn OFF

* film grain
* dynamic shadows

and bump up graphics as high as your computer will allow.

I think I'm forgetting a tweak to turn off. Anti-aliasing? Anyhow. Have fun. it's addicting.

(P.S. - @ Iw: though that's cool if he's not Kira's cup of black coffee, no sugar, i just have to point out that kaidan does swear - a lot. it makes me laugh every time he does. okay, done with that slight OT point. ;))

Get yourself a copy of the Mass Effect 2 Coalesced Editor, and add these bindings to the Bindings Manager:

( Name="F7", Command="ToggleHUD" )
( Name="Pause", Command="Playersonly" )
( Name="F12", Command="toggleflycam" )

Use your own preferred keys, of course (don't forget to recompile Coalesced.ini afterwards! And make a backup of it first).

Why turn off dynamic shadows? They're cool.

AA is always off, and can only be turned on thru forcing it externally (via nVidia Control Panel or nHancer or similar tool).

He does. Starting with "Damn!" if you shoot a gasbag on eden prime. the delivery is priceless. just like, "wtf was THAT for, commander?" and if you save him on virmire, his calling udina a b*stard is also hysterical. also the "better RTFM, ma'am" line on noveria. which isn't technically swearing, as he says the letters, not the words, but still. yeah, kaidan swears. i have yet to meet a marine who doesn't. he swears...nicely though. <-- not sure if that's an oxymoron or what.

Okay, so I really have enjoyed reading the bios, but I have a question to add to them:

What drove your femshep to become femshep? By that, I mean what is it that drove her to become the one who saved the galaxy - twice? Just dumb luck? Determination? With that is sort of the question of why did she continue on after dying. Anyhow, curious as to what made your femshep become the badass woman she is.
