Now it's finally happened and I managed to get atleast one of my FemSheps past the point where she says to Liara that she only wants to be friends :crying:. Had to make save right after it so I just wouldn't go and load and do it again. (Which I did anyway and saved that too.) So now I have 2 Jennifers there. One with no romances and one romancing Liara. Meh, I'm weak.

But at least you were able to get through that scene and you saved it. More than I've ever been able to do;)

True and atleast I don't have to go through that again. (unless I want to try romance Kaidan.) Bummer...

One of the reasons it remains so difficult on every playthrough is because you are shown the consequences of your actions personally. The blasted room with charred unrecognizable corpses is... well, it always gets me, too.

What did you do to Balak? Execute him? Wound him and let him bleed to death? Wound him and leave him for the Alliance? Or just leave him to be taken into custody with no extra injuries?

Jessica is deliberately cruel to him. I know the final shot is into his shoulder in the game, but I visualize her putting it into his gut. Being gutshot is a guaranteed death sentence, but it's very slow and painful. She felt he deserved at least that much.

And she's mostly Paragon, too.

kyrie shot at him (renegade), held herself back and disgustedly talked to him (paragon), then lost it again and shot him in the shoulder (renegade), then calmed herself and left him for the authorities (paragon). it really worked for me. kaidan at her back, watching on, gave her the strength to holster the gun at the end. but it was very satisfying to do it that way - and then when talking to simon, i ended up choosing a paragon line that had her say, "i'll be up all night with their faces in my mind" - so that seemed right, too.

it also felt good to end up with a few clicks of renegade red on the morality bar, weird as that sounds.

though i have to admit, if it wasn't three strangers in that room (say, it was kaidan, ashley, and liara) then there would be terrorists loose in the galaxy right now.

yeah ^ that is why i really hope they don't pull something like that with the reapers and make you choose LI/friends or to save the galaxy. i think that would just make me :crying:

I dread that very thought. I know my Shepard would do the right thing. Her sense of duty overrides all else, but I don't know that's something I don't even want to think about.

Yeah. I think mine would do the unselfish thing also in that situation (Balak, meh, get him another day, REapers, not so much), but yes, that would be bad.

My character is pretty much a reincarnation of my da:o Cousland who ended up with the "Redeemer" ending + alistair m. anora (held off on romancing him and convinced him to become king instead). i got the totally "this is in everyone's best interests" ending - except that it felt so bittersweet and lonely. i am really hoping the ME universe treats this character better.

That was just too funny.

I think my Shepard and Cousland are very similar. Duty comes first. Shepards needs after. She will do everything in her power to protect those closest to her. However, she wouldn't doom the world. I'm such a sap though. I'm really hoping for the and they lived happily ever after ending.

Edit: And every time I see another screenshot I just can't get over how incredibly gorgeous Kyrie is.  Definitely my favorite user created femShep.

This is true....these type of decisions become more difficult when the life of a LI character or friend is at stake.

I hope they don't pull that either.  I doubt they would do something that extreme.

If the stakes were lower than "Fate of the Galaxy" would you do it?

For the sake of argument let's say in the final battle your LI gets in trouble and you can either A) Stay with the main fleet and guide them into the attack on Harbringer leaving the individual in question to fend for themselves or B) Leave to get them out of touble and have hundreds of ships and thousands of people die as they wait for you to return.

How many lives would you trade for this one person?

^ here's the challenge: shep is not JUST a person with feelings. she's got tons of duties as well. so while i feel you do have an added duty to keep your own family (including LI in that) safe above other lives, the fact that shep took on the mantle of protector of other lives means she has to make ugly decisions.

this is why things like BDtS and the geth heretic station suck: what I would do as me, as a civilian, totally differ from what i think shep would/should do as a soldier and Spectre.

this is why i TOTALLY hope it's possible to pull off a happy ending - or mostly happy.

and @ sable: once again, thanks ;)

That's a good question...difficult, but good. The first time playing through this, I would definitely just save the LI. I'd have to think what each of my Shepard would do, though, and remake the decision later accordingly. I think my Renegade would save the LI (Liara in this case).

Wow, that's tough. I have to put myself in Shepard's shoes. I think it really depends. In Alex's case, she has already lost so much. She almost lost Liara and to loose her again... I don't know if she would be able to handle that. Coming in to the 3rd game, Shepard has already done so much. I think my Shepard is getting closer and closer to her breaking point. She'd finish the job, but if she lost Liara, I don't really know how she would fare once the galaxy was saved.

this is true^ shep is getting dangerously close to a breaking point, i think. i would REALLY like to see that explored in ME3, instead of more "*thud chest* i am emotionless, stoic shep badass"

but i also don't think shep would be able to live with herself after such a decision either way. i think if self-sacrifice was an option in there, it would be that. but i REALLY want a happy ending.

tha'ts a lot of REALLYs. but it's what i REALLY want is a happy ending. i want another suicide mission style thing where we can highly effect the outcome of the final battle. t'would be especially cool if you had to balance getting prepared (big guns to the battle) with time (you can only complete so many preparation missions ahead of time). then it would be this knife's edge of weapons vs. time to attack.

clearly i have been effected in my thinking by starcraft there...

Shepard breaking? Yes, I like this idea.

I agree that no matter what decision Shepard chooses, it will haunt her forever and she will be in great pain over it (unless she's the selfish type that wouldn't think twice about sacrificing innocents to save a loved one).

What  LI?
...Yeah, yeah, I know that's not what you meant. All right, then- for the sake of argument, let's see.

In this case I would say that my Shepard's opinion and mine are in agreement: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. One person, no matter how important they are to you, is not worth sacrificing thousands of lives. That -right there- is the problem with letting personal feelings interfere with responsibility.
With luck, this hypothetical LI would be able to take care of himself- after all, if he couldn't, why would he be on my team?

EDIT: Frakkin' typo.

While I agree, I would worry about how this could be properly executed. Many of us play (at least our canon sheps) like extensions of ourselves.  While I like the idea of developing Shepard's character with emotional trauma and anguish, I'm not sure how Bioware could portray it in a way that allows each player to customize the reaction to fit their shepard.  For example, I'd be extremely disturbed to see my femshep break out in tears or lash out at a squadmate, yet a think for some people this would be appropriate. To get anything out of my shepard another character would have to pry very persistantly until she let something slip.

I think it's unfortunate that it's up to the fans to give Shepard a soul.  Shepard was only made to seem alive in the SB DLC.  The only time we see him/her express emotion is in fanfic and fanart.  I posted a fanart picture in the Jack thread of Jack trying to help Sole Survivor Shepard through his trauma.  We never see that in-game.  Shepard's emotionless during Jack's romance-arc, too (it's a good thing that Jack has enough emotion for the two of them).

More Alive Shepard, please.

There's a tricky balance between "giving Shep a soul" and changing the game from an RPG to some sort of "interactive movie directing game".  It's a role-playing game, the player is supposed to do a lot "putting the soul into the character".

What pissed me off about BDtS is that there was no option that fits the way I understand Shep.

Shep doesn't passively accept that the choices are what Balak presents.  Shep makes it clear to Balak that Balak has a choice to make, and none of Balak's options involve walking away -- Balak can not blow the bombs, and surrender, or he can blow the bombs and... we won't get into the result of that choice.

If that means a more crowded and descriptive dialogue wheel and additional character development (not only Shepard), then I'm all for it.  Being scared of something is no reason to not at least attempt it.
