My main FemShep is a Vanguard. Though I am not too fond of the class, I am more into sniping and Tech, I can't imagine Alex without her shottie and biotics. I RP'ed her around Vanguard class and it mingle perfectly with her ME1 Renegon turned ME2 Paragate personality.

I can only play my main Shep. I've beat the game 5 times. 3 times as Soldier, once as Vanguard, and once as Adept. I enjoyed both the Vanguard and Adept playthroughs, but I've never been tempted to go back and completely change who she is. It was more just playing a few other classes for fun.

I've actually been toying with the idea of actually writing down My Sheps background and stuff. Maybe this will be a good excuse to finally do something about it. I just have a hard time letting go of things. Hence the reason I only have one Shepard that sometimes visits alternate realities as a different class.

I don't have problems with making new Sheps, but they all tend to be different variations of my first one. All of them have something in common with each other. There's always something that binds them to that first one even if they are from different backgrounds and classes.

As for writing stuff down, it has turned out to be fun so I warmly recommend of doing that.

Yeah, I've read what you've posted so far. I commented on it before, but I'm really enjoying what you've written. I just have to actually finalize some stuff in my head. Alex is a Spacer//War Hero and I'm having an interesting time really solidifying her background. I figure if I start writing all this down, it will help me play her a little better too. She started out being a slight representation of myself but she has since taken on a personality all  her own.  It's been fun and I'm finally getting to know her enough to possibly start writing her story. Though whether or not I post what I write remains to be seen, lol.

On another note, have any of you ever re-canonized your Shep? I was playing ME2 as a Sentinel and now I'm actually thinking about going through on ME1 as a Sentinel and then importing that game into ME2 and making that my new Canon game. I think it suits Alexandra's personality better than Soldier.

Not in class, no, but certain decisions have changed as I decided what her personality would be over the course of writing the fanfic. Balak gets caught and shot and handed over to the Alliance now. She is open to but suspicious of aliens at first, only warming up to them once she sees Garrus, Wrex, Tali and Liara help her and after hearing Kaidan's views on the matter. She's more prickly about being a biotic, because in ME1, it was more of a stigma. She also reacts more strongly to slavers and refuses to tell talitha there will be no dreams. she's more honest, blunt, and her first response is to be neutral or even renegade. ("major kyle - you want me to kill him?") in short, i didn't intend for her to be this conflicted, paragrade hero who seems icy, then turns fiery, but that's sort of how her personality turned out. but given the somewhat bipolar nature of shep's choices, what are you going to do? she feels a little kara thrace like now (not my intention) - but a little more clever about leading

i'm still mostly paragon points, as decisions tend to be very black and white and i don't like a lot of the renegade ones - they seem unnecessarily cruel in some cases, but i'm getting paragon points much more slowly and racking up a few clicks of renegade as well. i suspect in me2, i she will turn even more renegadish, go from a bastion to nemesis (With accompanying personality shifts as well), shoot el nora, and possibly even blow up the heretics. i do not know about that last one. she never tells me what she's going to do about the geth. that's one she tends to wing it.

also re: writing down backstory - is fun! i encourage it. though it can get out of hand and then you become a fanfic writer. ;)

I just enjoy playing a character that is badass and hot to boot.  I guess it's a part of the escapism for me.  I appreciate that others prefer more realism for their Shep, but if I could stick my Shep in high heels and give her a ridiculous big ass gun I would.  Oh wait, I can. Sweet.

As far as the broader topic of it being okay for men in media to be grizzled and "ugly" but woman being judged by beauty. Unfortunately you'll have to take that one up with society :)  I can't speak for everyone but I often find harsh, scarred male faces very attractive (Zaeed, how you doin?)

This brings up a salient point for me though, and that is the implication that it's not realistic for femshep to be both gorgeous/sexy and be a badass soldier.

Exactly! Which is where I come in, at your last sentence: 'badass' and 'gorgeous' simply don't mix. Not well, at least.

Zaeed is a fine example. To me he's your typical "Duke Nuke 'Em" character: ready to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And He's all out of gum. :) Now, he's hilarious, in his own right. I took him along once, just to hear his lines. But there simply isn't much depth to be had from him. And this is quite logical, even: 'badass' folks aren't commonly known for their nuance. The 'badass' type (and the 'renegade' can probably be found at the same end of the spectrum) doesn't finesse; they generally just brute-force their way thru a situation. The more badass, the more superficial. Being a guy and all, I've often played games like that: walking around with the biggest gun in-game, fragging everyone around me. Wacky fun! :) So, the question then boils down to simply this, Do I want to play a superficial Femshep? And the answer is no. If, indeed, I wanted that, I'd make a Zaeed kinda character. I want a refined Femshep. One who doesn't draw power from kicking ass, but from being persuasive and convincing. And who can still hold her own. Naturally, totally scarred-up Femsheps could still be all that; but if I wanted a 'man-lookalike' Femshep, like I said, I'd simply play a man.

Look at our resident badass girl, Jack. She kicks some major ass, no? Yet even she is gorgeous. While Bioware mutilated almost every other part of her body, they left her face intact. And I'm guessing for the same reason: she would otherwise too manly.

Also, scars and other facial distortions are sort a cheap gimmick to spell 'badass.' To make a truly convincing Femshep renegade, without resorting to deep glowing scars and red eyes, is actually quite hard. Most renegade Femsheps I've seen are caricatures, rather than believable personae -- rynluna's Shai, to name one, being the odd exception (emotionally scarred, but not beyond reach, and still visibly in need of her humanity).  I'm sure others succeeded too, but I, for one, have never been able to create a plausible renegade Femshep.

So, to draw to a conclusion, it's not that I judge my Femshep on her looks per se, so much as that I don't want her to look like Zaeed... simply because she isn't a man. I *do* like my Femshep to be fair looking: simply because I have to look at her all the time. But 'purtiness' was not foremost on my mind when creating her. And there's a reason Bioware chose her to be 29-ish, and not 18. They wanted a believable female Commander. And so do I.

I must agree. I find it helps me get into the character much more and help to create and understand their personality. My "canon" Shepard is of the Colonist/War Hero Background, which is my favorite to expand on. It gives Shepard the chance for a good and wholesome childhood and then to have it all torn away at a young age when she still has her "childhood innocence", to give her a trauma that will make her strong, yet keep her always striving to be better and "earn her survival and the sacrifice her parents made that day". It also gives her plenty of room for emotion and mental "unstable-ness" because in reality....she is still in some regards, just a 16 year old girl inside whom never got the chance to "finish growing up" and was almost forced into the life she now leads.

The way I see it, every great hero character like Shepard needs a "life shattering" event or trauma in their past to scar and change them into the great protagonist that they are, as we know and love them..and the loss or murder of ones parents/family in childhood is a classic....Bruce Wayne and Vito Corleone come to mind as two of the most classic examples.

The other part of the story is what makes them "epic" or legendary to everyone else in the galaxy? The War Hero background seems to give the best starting point for this. The "Blitz" seems to the kind of skirmish or battle that everyone remembers "where you were when the "Blitz" happened" ..and those who make sacrifices or perform great heroic acts during such an event become endeared to and remembered by the people. Audie L. Murphy is one of the most famous examples as the most highly decorated soldier of World War II who, single handed, held off a large detachment of enemy troops for over an hour with a gun shot wound to his leg, so that his company could fall back from harms way. This won him the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I saw Shepard's actions in much the same light and with the thought that may be she also had some guilt from the deaths of her parents: Inside she feels like their deaths kind of "her fault" because she didn't try to save them (hating herself a little inside for being "weak" and not trying), so she won't let that happen to her fellow soldiers in peril....She'll save them or dye trying. All of these things help to refine the character and give you a view into their mental processes and feelings.

Here is what I came up with for mine. It's not complete by any means, but It is in it's fourth draft stage now as I flesh out the 3rd person sections and devise and add new personal touches (like audio file transcripts, letters, emails, journals, etc) and expand the existing ones.

Anyway, enough ramblings....enjoy!

(Colonist / War Hero / Paragade / Soldier)

Madeline Ione Shepard was born on the human colony of Mindor, to Anthony and Hannah Shepard at 2:15 am in the South Gate Medical Center, April 11th 2154.

*slight crackle*

"Tony?...(out of breath).....Is it a boy.... or a girl?

..."It's a girl,.... a beautiful girl"

"We had a little girl?....."

"Yeah Hannah...and she has your blue eyes, and the same fiery red hair that caught my eye the first time I ever saw you, sweetheart"

.."Let me see her......oh, she is gorgeous...look at her Tony, our daughter!.....What will we call her?"

"Well, why don't we name her after your mother?"

"Madeline?....really?

"Yeah, it's classy and I think it's fitting... your Mom would have loved her to death...her only granddaughter"

"Ok..always thought it sounded rather "old fashioned"....what about a middle name?.. I was thinking, Ione"

"Like my Grandmother? I didn't know you liked Nana's name?"

"Then it's settled....Madeline Ione Shepard...welcome to the world, my sweet little girl"

*crackle as sound disappears - A little girl's voice chimes in*

"Aw, Dad!...why do have to drag that stupid holo-vid out every year at my birthday?"

"Because Maddy, it was a very special day for you..as well as for your mother and I and we like to relive it on your very special day"......God, it just seems like it was just yesterday.."

"Cool...soooo can I go play now?"

"Yes, just remember..Grandpa is coming over later this afternoon...so don't make a mess out yourself, and Madeline....be back here at.."

"18:00 hours..I know the drill Mom..."

"Give your ol' Dad a hug before you run off..." *hugs Madeline* ..I love you so much, happy birthday"

"Thanks Daddy"

Madeline had two brothers who where much older than she, Wesley Francis Shepard (2137 - 2157) was 17 when Madeline born and Morgan James Shepard (2143 – 2170) was 11. She didn't spend time with Wes much as he was busy with his friends, school and ROTC, but Morgan always watched out for her. Wes would later later enlist in the Alliance Military in 2155 and die in combat during the First Contact War...something her parents would never fully recover from, and that she would not understand until later in life. Her father was a former Alliance Marine, but never spoke about it. After Wesley's death, to ensure that his surviving children would be able to take care of themselves in any situation in "such dangerous galaxy", he taught them both to shoot and by the age of 12, Madeline had reached the level of most 3rd year Alliance Military Cadets. When she was a teenager, He also began teaching them various forms of HTH combat and self defense tactics...at which she excelled.

On August 29th 2170, the colony Mindor was raided by a band of Batairian slavers. I started as a beautiful cool day, unusual for this time of year as "August" was usually a hot month...hotter than Earth, and the one Madeline hated because of it. Late in the afternoon, two ships dropped through the atmosphere and made a strange and unscheduled landing. The 89 slavers aboard them poured out like angry bees and waded into the unprepared colony slaughtering and butchering anyone they came across.... including then 16 year old Madeline Shepard's family while she watched in horror from the hiding place her Mother had placed her moments before 5 slavers burst in through the front door....

*AUDIO FILE BEGINS - DR. ALLEN MEYERS - DATE 7-24-2179*

"Ah, Lieutenant...Come in, please...have a seat"

"..is this gonna take long...I just.....look, not be rude or anything...but I'm not sure why I'm here and I think it is just a waste of both of our time"

"Well since we are apparently skipping the introductions..."

"Your just another shrink here to examine my "delicate mental state" or "dive into my deepest most inner pain" or some **** like that.. right?"

"well, sometimes that is part of it, yes...but the reason you are here is that you were referred to me by your attending physician.....Dr. Lambert and I are old friends"

"ooooo..the plot thickens! So Lambert thinks I'm loosin' my marbles or something?"

"..actually he was rather concerned about you..he told me you have been have quite a bit of trouble sleeping and trying for several weeks to get another prescription for Esoretnapam"

"Yeah, so..I have insomnia some times and need something to put down for the night...gotta be rested for what we do"

"Esoretnapam is a very strong sleep aid for very severe cases and in small doses...it's not for the occasional bout of insomnia.......he has been your attending doctor for almost 7 years now, he said you have always suffered from trouble sleeping.."

"Look....I don't know what the f*** you guys think is going on, but it's nothing I can't deal with...I just need the Esoretnapam to get myself straightened back out... on a good sleep schedule"

"...This doesn't look good Madeline, you know that....It doesn't look good on paper, it doesn't look good to your commanding officer. I am required to file a full report with Captain Price if I feel there is an issue...that would mean he would have to remove you from duty....with your military record, I just don't think you would want that to happen...I don't want that to happen either"

*short pause*

(sigh) "ok...look..I..I have nightmares that keep me awake"

"Nightmares?....what sort of nightmares?

*awkward pause*

(her voice looses all emotion, with a hint of pain and fear) ".......Horrible Nightmares...."

"Go on Madeline....what are these nightmares like?

"There about....my family"

"..You mean about what happened to them on Mindor?"

"..Yes...I....I..can see my mother, she is in the kitchen preparing dinner like she always did at this time in the afternoon.

"Tell me a little about her, your mother"

"She was beautiful, she had a strong spirit and a kind heart....my father used to tell me a story about how they met on the Citadel during their academy days. He said he saw her for the first time on the Presidium....on one of those bridges, you know...the ones across the lakes?......He would describe her as having long, flowing locks of fiery red hair and the most piercing ice blue eyes he had ever seen with a gaze that could cut to the depths of the deepest ocean...or the deepest part of a man's soul"...as he would say"

"...Go on Maddy"

"Just then, my father comes running in yelling about something that is happening....just can't understand him. He has fear in his eyes.....something I had never seen in him before. My mother is scared too, and comes to find me...rambling....almost about needing to hide me..I...don't know why....I..I am terrified now as well....I can feel tears welling up in my eyes..."

"....After my mother puts me into the service tunnel beneath the house 5 Batarian kick our front door in and barge into the house...I can hear my mother scream as one of them grabs her and drags her into the living room.....I can hear my father yelling at them to leave mother alone, I know that is what he said... I just couldn't hear his exact words..."

"..I stick my head up through the service hatch in the dinning room so that I can see what's happening....I remember seeing one of them hit my mother really hard and my father jump up to attack the Batarian.....then.....um....they uh....." *choking back tears*

"Then what happened..... to your father?"

".....(tearful sigh)..they....the one he attacked...stabbed him with...a ..large knife......when he uh..fell to his knees..another one shot him in the temple...and it splattered my mother..who began screaming...and screaming.......until....they..um (chokes back tears) ....they..(voice falters)..slit her throat..."

"..Her blood....was everywhere....it ran like ...um.....a river as one of the Batarians drug their bodies out the front door.........That was the last time...I..I saw either of them.

" .....oh god,...I can still see their faces!..(trying hard not to cry).."

*long pause*

"..what happened after that Maddy...how did you escape?"

"....Don't really remember exactly how I got out, but I remember the tears....the lump in throat and in my stomach......and the pure, unbridled rage that consumed me. I remember making it to the kitchen and finding the knife.."

"What knife?"

"...The 14 inch cutting knife that my mother had been using just minutes earlier" I remember picking it up and...the rest is a little blurry"

"well what do you remember from that time?"

"......I just remember using what my father had taught me....and killed every last one of those f***ers in my house..who had killed my parents......I stabbed them, sliced and hacked at them until I was to weak to hold the knife anymore....or see through the tears, blood and rage.......It was the first time I had ever taken a life." (clears throat and wipes her eyes).

"....I got this scar...across my eye, here...from the last one I killed...he was the only one who tried to fight back.....it reminds...of, uh...what they made me into ...and that whole thing...every time..(sniff, wipes eye)...every time a look in a mirror"

"...How do you feel, Madeline?"

" (sniffs)...Better....I guess.....never told that to anyone..don't know what good it did telling you"

"Sometimes people carry great burdens of pain..bottled up for years and just need to release it....It is a healing process"

"...don't know if I believe that, doc.....sounds like shrink bull**** to me..." (unknown rustling noise)

"...Well...it looks like our time is up.....If you ever need to talk just..."

"..Sure thing, doc...that is just what I want...to come back and sob like a chump and share feelings...this was awkward enough as it was"

"...At least let me know if you still have those nightmares.."

( door opens) "...(sarcastic chuckle)..yeah, sure doc."

(door shuts)

*END OF AUDIO FILE*

After the colony distress call had been sent, the frigate SSV Lexington and the carrier SSV Theodore Roosevelt arrived on the scene in response. Of the 497 colonists on Mindor, Madeline was one of just 22 survivors from the raid on Mindor, known now as the "Mindor Massacre" (4 others died later of wounds sustained). She and the other 22 survivors were sent to The Alliance Medical Center on Elysium for medical care. Madeline, now an orphan of the attack, was taken in by the Alliance Childcare Center and was enrolled in the Alliance Youth ROTC until she turned eighteen and enlisted with the Alliance Marine Academy.

The incident on Mindor had left her cold and hardened, and her training by her father gave her a "running start", performing better than almost all of her fellow cadets. Most Alliance Marine Cadets serve a 2 year tour of duty "planet side" before being assigned to a fleet star ship, but the young Cadet Shepard's technical proficiency test scores and overall physical standing during basic training gave her the opportunity along with financial aid from being awarded the Jon Grissom Scholarship, to apply to the Lansing Special Forces Academy at Arcturus right after her hazardous environment training was completed in 2173.

With a dropout rate of over 88%, the Academy was an institution legendary for its brutal training regimens and unforgiving instructors following the First Contact War and as a result, produced some of the greatest warriors in the galaxy. Madeline made it through the 2 year Academy to graduation with top honors in 2175 along with 9 other fellow graduates. The same year, Corporal Shepard was immediately assigned to the SSV Tannenburg, a frigate in service since the early 2150's. The majority of her missions were Recon, sabotage, and assassinations, with the occasional deep-strike operations into the Terminus Systems.

After the SSV Tannenburg was decommissioned shortly after her assignment there, Corporal Shepard attended the Westfield Officer Candidate School, graduating with top honors. Her first command assignment as an officer was as a 1st lieutenant aboard the SSV Yorktown in early 2176. Just 8 months into her first tour on the Yorktown, the crew received a bit of long over due shore leave. Madeline and several of her fellow crew members were spending their shore leave on Elysium when the now famous conflict known as "The Blitz" broke out. During the skirmish, she risked her own life to repel an entire enemy attach single handed and saved the lives of 6 fellow soldiers....

From: Adml Steven Hackett (shackett@arcturus.alliancenavy.mil)
To: Madeline Shepard, Lt. (mshepard@ssvyorktowm.alliancenavy.mil)
Re: Your conduct on Elysium.

Lt. Shepard,

I was privileged to read your report on the conflict on Elysium..and of course the actions of you and your team. All of the marines under your command fought well, a fight we could not have won without them.

I also feel privileged to have heard of your individual actions. Your heroism and bravery was unprecedented and helped save the lives of 6 of your fellow marines. It is something that we do not often seen on the fields of battle, but when we do, it makes us all proud and deserves recognition.

I am pleased to inform you that Alliance has chosen to present you with the Alliance Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the Alliance military. Only 669 have been awarded since the Alliance was chartered in 2149, and we are proud to honor you as the 670th Medal of Honor recipient.

Congratulations.

Admiral Steven L. Hackett
Commander, Fifth Fleet. Alliance Navy.

After Elysium, Staff Lt. Shepard remained on assignment aboard the SSV Yorktown until late 2181 when the Yorktown put in for a extensive 14 month overhaul and refit. Promoted to Lt. Commander in 2182, Madeline was assigned to a temporarily assignment at Arcturus Station shortly before being assigned to the SSV Normandy in 2183.

Fun facts:
*Prior to her reconstruction under the Lazarus Project, she suffered from color blindness in her left eye and minor nerve damage around it as a result of a knife wound sustained at the age of 16 during the Raid on Mindor, commonly referred to as the "Mindor Massacre" in 2170.
*Is a talented Pianist, as was her mother. She received lessons until the age of 16, but continues to play frequently.
*Has a small collection of antique firearms including an original 1851 Colt Navy Revolver, The Colt M1911 her Grandfather (7 times removed) carried during World War II and an original Thompson Model 1921AC.
*Carries a custom combat knife made for her by her father.
*Suffers from Dyslexia.
*is of Scottish -Irish-Italian decent.
*is an exceptional poker player and in her Alliance Academy days won several tournaments with total winnings in the amount of 250,000 credits.
*Is a fan of the original "Star Trek" series.
*is a lover of classic Rock n' Roll such as The Beatles, AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Queen and Steve Miller. Is also a lover of classical and Jazz of the 1930's, 40's and 50's.
*By the age of 15, was trained in 6 forms Hand to Hand combat and 4 different forms of firearms training.
*Is a Yankee's fan.
*As a chiled, dreamed of being a galactic adventurer and explorer. On one of her childhood "explorations" to the loft in the family barn, she fell and broke her right arm at age 9.
*Loves to write Poetry, but has never shared any of her works with anyone other than her mother.

Same here, really. If my Sheps end up being pretty, that's great. But I don't set out to create them that way. All except one of my FemSheps have gone through various incarnations with different looks/features, but they'll always have certain hair and eye colour - eg. Alessia will always have dark hair and blue eyes, Mara will always have green eyes and red hair, etc. In addition to hair and eyes, I do make sure they're at least similar to the original ME1 faces. Jeena was the only one I was happy with from the start

As for the face codes question, I do occasionally post screenshots with them. Most of my Sheps are at least partly based on face codes from the forums and/or the face codes DB, so...

Good to see some Sentinel love! Though Sentinel in ME1 is radically different from the ME2 version of the class, it's much more support based in ME1 as opposed to the tank like class in ME2 that makes builds like an Assault Sentinel so much fun to play as.

As for re-canonizing Shepard, I've stuck with one class (Vanguard) as the "True" class of my Shep but I've changed some decisions after thinking they might suit the character better. A recent "retcon" would be to save the Genophage research data in Mordin's loyalty mission, Maelon still gets shot but keeping the data seems a more pragmatic choice after all it's better to have it and not need than the other way around as Shepard puts it.

Great snap!  She actually really suits those scars.   I think light scarring on femshep works really well most of the time :)

I love femSheps that have a certain warmth to their face. I find that if Shepard looks like a supermodel, I feel alienated from her character. Is there anything wrong with creating a bodacious Shepard? No. But is it likely that a character like Shepard would look so damn hot? ......No. I feel like Shepard is already treading on Mary Sue territory so it's nice to balance out her kick-ass skills with an understated beauty.

Some beautiful screenshots on this page, people. Excellent work! In general, it seems that the Shepards created by this thread's regulars are very pretty. Nice job.

I intend to eventually write down my Shepard's personality and backstory, and use that as a base from which I can develop and elaborate on her character even further. I'm a horrible procrastinator, though. Argh!

I may be biased due to the fact that ryn is a close friend of mine, but I think that Kathryn Shepard possesses a considerable amount of warmth to her face. She also appears to be very friendly, and quite happy. Probably due to the fact that she is perpetually smiling! But yeah, I think that Kathryn's face is certainly the warmest, IMO.

I'm guessing Kathryn must be a paragon then^_^.

Speaking of warmth, we need more moments of Shepard smiling. Maybe it's so off-putting because we rarely see Shepard bare teeth but I would like to see less robotic expressions and more of this:

Another Adept named Kate?! Oh no! My Shepard is not unique! :P

In all seriousness, she's beautiful. Excellent work, Ciryx.

I couldn't agree with you more. There is just something about Shep smiling. Maybe it's just me, or my Shep, but I think she has a smile that could light up a room. It's roo bad we don't get to experience it often.

Thanks. :D

Ye, blue eyes with dark hair and darker skin tend to have that effect. :)
I really gonna try out a blond Shep with hazel Eyes next. Thats one of the other combinations thats seen very rarely but looks gorgous. Well, brown eyes in generell are totally underestimated.

Haha, ye. And here i thought i was on the save side when picking such an totally uncummon name as Kate for my Shephard, but oh well. :D

Thank you! Gotta find the Code for her if people like her and post it in this Facecode Threat.
