So guys.
I've been doing the 'OC influence meme' on DeviantArt, and it got me to thinking.
If you're like me, when you create a roleplaying (or story) character, chances are they're going to have some influences from either popular media, or people you know personally. You may not even be aware of this until you examine your character closely.
Now, looking back over the past few pages, I can see that you -and I- put some serious thought into 'your' Shepards: what makes them who they are, how they react, why they've made some of those in-game choices... all that jazz.
My question is... who, if anyone, inspired that particular personality (and appearance)? Why?
I'll post my own responses in a bit. Or I could just link you to the meme. Either way. >.>
That is a great question.
My "canon" Shepard, Madeline is very much an extension of my own personality and the "things" that I am....but she tends to be more so the "things" I am not...Her strengths are my weaknesses so to speak.
Her "War Hero" background and actions there in are based on my Great-Grandfather, Cecil. He was a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator (bomber) for the U.S. Army Air Corp. during the Second World War. In 1943 his squadron was attacked by a fleet of enemy fighters that destroyed almost his entire squadron (his plane being the only survivor). He had been wounded in the hip during the attack, but kept shooting till he was out of ammo. After the attack, he attempted to raise his fellow crew via intercom...but no one would respond. He went up forward to find them all dead and the aircraft severely wounded. Rather than ditch the plane in the sea, land it behind enemy lines and risk capture..he fought to keep her in the air, flew her back to base and "belly landed" her (because the hydraulics for the landing gears had been shot up) on the runway...all to bring his fallen fellow crewmen "home".
As Ashwraith mentioned "If you're like me, when you create a roleplaying (or story) character, chances are they're going to have some influences from either popular media, or people you know personally"..I also see my "canon" as a mix of Ellen Ripley, James T. Kirk, Linda Hamilton's "Sarah Connor", "Ellen" from "The Quick and the Dead" and a dash of Martin Riggs and Harry Callahan for good messure.
As for appearence...I just tried to get her as close to as she appeared in my mind, but I believe there were some influences from classic Hollywood actresses of the past....I believe Natelie Wood was one of them.
