Nice backstory, nocturne. Thanks for sharing.

MDK, the idea for a new Freya picture sounds great. You should definitely create something like that.

That would be my guess too.  And socks.   You always need socks.

Cliff's Notes: Jane Shepard / Colonist / Ruthless / Paragade / Infiltrator / Romanced Liara

Jane was born on the human colony of Mindoir, to John and Hannah Shepard. She had a sister two years her younger, Nicki (I don't recall ever reading that Shep was an only child). Her father, an expert marksman, taught her to shoot when she was a teenager, and she acquired a sizable knowledge of tech skills from repairing broken farming equipment.

When Mindoir was raided by slavers, Jane was one of a handful of people not killed or captured, partly due to skill, mostly due to luck. She and the other survivors were sent to Elysium for medical care. Afterwards, Jane worked odd jobs until she turned eighteen and enlisted with the Alliance.

Hard life as a colonist helped her during training, and she performed better than most. Most Alliance Marines serve a tour on a colony world or two beforebeing assigned to the fleet. Jane's technical scores and overall standing during Basic gave her the opportunity to apply to the Special Forces Academy right after her hazardous environment training on Titan.

With a washout rate of over 95%, the Academy was an institution legendary for its brutal training regimens and unforgiving instructors following the First Contact War. Jane made it through to graduation and was immediately assigned to the fleet. The majority of her missions were performed alone or with a single partner, very rarely did she work in groups of more than three. Recon, sabotage, and assassination were her primary mission profiles, with the occasional deep-strike op into the Terminus Systems.

Eventually, she attended Officer Candidate School, a joke compared to her N7 training. Her first command was as a lieutenant during the Theshaca Raids, where her team was responsible for the most enemy kills. Her work during the raids was one of the reasons she was chosen to lead the ground team at Torfan. Mindoir and Elysium were almost merciful compared to the exacting, thorough, and grievous annihilation of all enemy personnel trapped in the base.

After Torfan, Jane's life settled down somewhat. Now a commander, she rotated through a desk job, occasionally being recalled for the odd N7 mission before being assigned to the Normandy.

Yeah, I kinda put some work into it. Oh, and REVENGE!

I love it!  Lots of detail.

I can't imagine she'd be naked, but nor would it be something that extensive.

Hm....now I really want to draw a pic of Shepard midway through armoring up.

I picture the 'underwear' for her armor as being something light, but fullbody, like the fullbody swimsuits yhou sometimes see.  Mostly I imagine it hat way because that sort half-leather/half-chainmail textured stuff underneath the hard plates looks like it would cling, chafe, and generally be really unpleasant to wear against your bare skin for an extended period.  For the light and medium armor of ME1 I had sort of the same idea as you - sports bra and undewear. and not much else.

EDIT: Yes, and socks!

Yeah, that makes sense. I couldn't really picture someone wearing something like a dress uniform in addition to their bodysuit and armor.

Although if all she's wearing is her underwear and her beat up armor...very risqué.

Something I've been wondering, by the way. For those of us that create and devise elaborate and detailed backstories for our Shepards, do you do so in part because you wish to incorporate it into fanfiction or fanart? Is it something you wish to explore in creative writing, and use when you create your own stories that elaborate on your individual Shepard's personality? Or, is it strictly for your own benefit so that you are able to immerse yourself in your Shepard's story, so that it fleshes her out and makes her a deeper character in your own eyes whilst playing the game?

I'm curious. Fanfiction is where people seem to enjoy sharing the stories of their individual Shepards, whereas some who expand the backstories of their characters prefer to keep it private and use it for their own benefit.

I've noticed something about the female anims in ME1.

Stand still. Does it look like FemShep isn't standing up as straight as she should?

Now note the cup size of FemShep (and by extension every other armor-clad humanoid female in the game). B-ish, would you say?

Now, Go into a jog and examine from the side and note the cup size. A bit bigger, yes? Her back seems straighter too.

Now, come to a stop. Did you see them shrink back down? Run and stop repeatedly and watch.

Methinks there's an animation bug in at least ME1. ME2 has a similar slouched back IIRC, noticeable on Miranda and Samara as well, so it may be present in that game as well.

I find it comes in very handy when playing the game. It's a much better moral compass to follow than just "mostly paragon, do a renegade one every now and again"

Plus it's nice to have a cohesive backstory that you can draw upon in both fics and art.

For me, I saw all the folks on these forums fleshing out their character's background, and it made me think, "What's my Shepard's life story? Why does she act the way she does?" It's more for fun than anything else, in my case.

I think it helps with fanfic/fan art and with RPing the game.

I've kept mine private, for the most part, but will try and incorporate it into fan fic in the near future.  This will also prevent me from wanting to change her story every few months. :pinched:

Both.  I intend on writing some fanfic or one-shots on the life and times of Kathryn Shepard.  I've just been too lazy to get around to doing it.  But it also helps me enjoy playing more when I know what it is that drives the woman to fight for what she believes in.  The backstory that I have in my head anyway.  ^_^

Interesting responses, guys. Thanks!

For the record, I also like to expand and elaborate on the backstory of my Shepard for predominantly RPing purposes, and to immerse myself in her story and breathe life into her character whilst I am playing the game. I will be creating and writing some fanfic very soon, so that will also help to flesh out my Shepard's characterisation to an even greater extent.

This quote is from page four, but I was catching up on the entire thread while having coffee and toast so I wanted to chime in:

Collider wrote...

I did find some F!Shepard screenshots on the main Mass Effect 2 website. I gather though, it seems, that they weren't there prior to the release of the game.

I remember this -- I was all over the forums in the days leading up to ME2 release since I was so excited about the game. There were no femShep wallpapers, screenshots, avatars -- none -- until about several days before the game's release. People were getting leaked copies or early releases and they were taking screenshots of their characters or posting live feeds of them playing the game. One really nice poster went out of his way to find all the information he could find on femshep. He edited the first post in his thread with pictures of femshep on character creation, links to videos of femshep, and so on. It was a really big deal, but that thread did get locked unfortunately. Best I could tell, a moderator took pity and got a handful of femShep screenshots uploaded to the main site. I remember being ecstatic that femShep was finally acknowledged, but bummed that this was done two days before the game came out. Of course, there was a fair share of lame posts saying that male Shepard was the face of the product, deal with it, wah wah, blah blah.

:P

Edit: typo

If I could write prose better than I do, I would do a Shep fanfic, but mostly it's for my game experience.  It's like nocturne said, why does she do the things she does?  For me the fun was taking a character who should be a complete basket case (Colony/Sole Survivor) and turning her into a (mostly) paragon and how she got that way.  I have some details on mine on my blog, but I'm currently writing a more comprehensive background.

Dont know really, something to add to the story. If I were a better artist, I would most likely put more time into fan art. And for fanfic, well I always hate taking someone else's idea. I think it just gives us a better understanding of why we do what we do ingame. It is an rpg and it helps us fit the role better I guess. Though once work slows down I might start a fanfic. Been thinking of one for awhile, and I do enjoy creative writing.

I also remember this.  I was dying to see what FemShep would look like with better graphics so I perused the forums trying to get information.  It was tough avoiding spoilers and I even found a live stream online somewhere of someone playing the game early with a FemShep.

It really sucks that the fans had to pick up the slack though.  I don't see how hard it is for a few screenshots and maybe a video or two released around the same time ME3 Sheploo stuff is put out.  We aren't asking for Sheploo to take a step aside, we just want some small tidbits and not a few days before the game's release!

In my OP, I stated that we would appreciate screenshots of dlc armor too.  Metal-Dragon-Kiryu was nice enough to get screens the day of the last DLC armor release but really.....

How hard is it for the devs to give us this stuff???

Yeah, we get a handful of screenshots about a week or so before release.

I too had to go on livestream to see FemShep in ME2. It was actually quite a special moment when I heard Jennifer Hale's voice.

I understand the whole marketing thing - I get it. But to not even show videos on the official site? Not cool.

I always thought they should have used a different custom Shepard for each of the class videos. Would have been a good way to show off the armor customisation too.

That's not a bad idea, show like 3 different FemSheps and 3 different MaleSheps.

I don't see this ever happening, though.

I remember the ME1 class art showed different Shepards, even some FemSheps.   By 'class art' I mean the Shepards they used on their site to represent each class.

For example, the Engineer:

Indeedy.

Really makes me kinda depressed when I look at the back of my ME1 box and see that shot of FemShep and Wrex...

How about something as simple as a picture of Jane Shepard on the rear of the packaging, with the tagline "Play as Commander Shepard as either gender!" Surely that's not too hard, no?

Reminds me of that trailer idea I had a while back.

Sheploo is walking towards the camera, and starts talking about all the hard choices that lay ahead. As he talks, he starts morphing into different Shepards - FemSheps, MaleSheps, of all races and attitudes, with the voice changing between Meer and Hale appropriately, and then at the end he turns back into Sheploo and says "What will you choose?"

It'd kinda help bring the whole "it's all about choice" thing back.

That's a really good idea, MDK. I like that.

I get the impression that BW are way too attached to their marketing friendly male space marine Sheploo, though. It's an easier character to identify with amongst the target demographic.
