Reminds me of that trailer idea I had a while back.

Sheploo is walking towards the camera, and starts talking about all the hard choices that lay ahead. As he talks, he starts morphing into different Shepards - FemSheps, MaleSheps, of all races and attitudes, with the voice changing between Meer and Hale appropriately, and then at the end he turns back into Sheploo and says "What will you choose?"

It'd kinda help bring the whole "it's all about choice" thing back.

OMG!!

That idea is brilliant!!

Yes, why couldn't they have marketed on choice?!  I've posted this picture here before but it depicts FemShep and MaleShep who happen to be two different classes.  I really like it.

That's a really good idea, MDK. I like that.

I get the impression that BW are way too attached to their marketing friendly male space marine Sheploo, though. It's an easier character to identify with amongst the target demographic.

Yeah, unfortunately.

As I said to someone on LJ, if you stuck FemShep on the cover, had her firing a bigass gun, surrounded by debris and explosions, would people honestly look at it and say "ewww that's a girls' game!"

I think not.

Bioware don't seem to realise that FemShep does the same things as MaleShep. They even said in their marketing explanation for DA2 that if they put a female on the cover, they'd be accused of making her "too sexy." They're honestly saying that if they put FemShep on the cover, she would HAVE to be wearing a bikini or something?

I was wondering... How important is it for you all that the game can be played as a female character? Would you skip ME3 if FemShep was not in it (let's hope not)?

I'm not worried about ME3.  BioWare has started a project and they aren't going to change this 2/3rds of the way through.  With that being said, I would have no reason to buy it if I couldn't continue the majority of my characters.

On a new game, being able to play a women is very important to me.  If I have two games to pick from, that I think might be fun,  and one of them lets me play as a woman, I'll pick that one.  I may get the other one at the game store as a used copy to see if I like it, but the one I will pre-order and pay top dollar for is the one who lets me play my sex.

It's the reason I support all of BioWare's products.  It's the reason I play Morrowind, Obilivion Fall out 3 and Fable 2.  Though I enjoy playing all of these as a guy, my main reason for buying them in the first place was because I could play as female or male, pick my skills and the other rpg factors.l

I don't buy a game just because it's has a woman as the main character.  I tried Laura Croft and Wet.  I just couldn't get into the character or the game.  I got Buffy and that was fun.  I also do buy games who have a male character, I still play Star Wars the force unleashed once in awhile.

I tend to skip RPGs if they can't be played with female protagonist. Actually, i nearly skipped ME1 because there was almost no info on how you can play as female. All i've seen was Sheploo, but a friend of mine almost forced me to play it. Gender choice in character creator was a pleasant surprise

I did this with Fall Out 3.  It had been out for at least a year before I saw somewhere I could play as a female or mail.  I pre-orderd ME because Chris kept saying not to worry.  I tend to trust this group of developers.

I agree with you, M-D-K, but I can also see how a marketing point of view - and I think EA/Bioware know a thing or two about that - the main target audience by far is boys aged 15 and over. It's hugely important for the target audience to have something to identify with in the game and while FemShep wouldn't make the game seem girly per se, it would be harder for the average teenage boy to identify with that than with a tough male Marine-looking character. OK, "Identify" probably isn't the word, more like "aspire to".

Thinking about it, about the only game I can think of that sold itself as having a female main character and still actually sold was Tomb Raider. In every other successful game you may have some woman there as eye candy but it's the generic male hero type taking up the limelight. Oh, unless the game is selling itself purely on sex appeal to lonely boys (e.g. DoA Beach Volleyball).

I mainly prefer playing as females for two reasons...

a) there's far too many musclebrained male characters in video games/movies/whatever

B) I generally prefer female characters in general - especially when they're tough

Random OT thought - Heavenly Sword had an awesome badass female lead. It didn't sell as well as expected. Ninja Theory's next game features a big burly male character player character.

FML.

Well... I've created a poll about it.

How important is FemShep?

Let's see how it goes. ;)

Sorry, this is a poll i'll skip.  If it was asking about female characters in general I'd definitely vote.  But ME3 is already in motion and set.  All I can see this doing it causing arguments.

This and a female is much easier to look at during a 25 hour game. Plus hales voice acting is amazing

It's an academic question of course. BW would never do that. I am just curious about the reactions.

Ahh.  I'm not good at academic questions, or the what if questions.   I never "got" geometry.  I was an algebra person.  Give me rules.  :)

I like the default FemShep hair, by the way. In both it's ME1 and 2 incarnations. I like the improved textures and slightly longer style used in ME2, however.

Hairs one of the hardest things to model and look "right" but very easy to look "ok".  But they could just do what they did with either mirandas hair and have a bit of it swish while the other parts of it stayed in place. Ah well mods help a bit.

Well we know that under the armor pieces there's that black suit with the almost chainlink texture.

Beneath that, I'm picturing something like a sports bra and shorts, maybe?

I can't imagine she'd be naked, but nor would it be something that extensive.

Hm....now I really want to draw a pic of Shepard midway through armoring up.

I agree, sports bra and some kind of boxer shorts.  Naked under that armor, ewwww.  Sounds really uncomfortable.  Unless they come a long way in armor, maybe develop some new materials, that are more comfortable yet still protective.

Thing is....a lot of games today have hair that moves either with your character or in the wind.

Fable II, Tekken 6, Heavenly Sword, Resident Evil 5, Soul Calibur IV, to name a few - all from a variety of genres, and most look pretty good.

Bioware have done a few tricks to make some hair look better - Miranda's hair in ME2, beards in DA:O, but it really is plastic fantastic when it comes to them...

I guess because only FemSheps have hair that would be affected, BW aren't that fussed.

I prefer the shorter haircuts myself. Mainly because I like short hair on girls but it's also because the hair in ME/ME2 does often look a bit... odd, to be honest. Kind of like they're wearing a plastic mould in the shape of hair; they could do with a bit of movement in there. That said, Miranda's is distinctly better than the other female hair-types in the game and that doesn't move either.

Something I've been wondering, by the way. For those of us that create and devise elaborate and detailed backstories for our Shepards, do you do so in part because you wish to incorporate it into fanfiction or fanart? Is it something you wish to explore in creative writing, and use when you create your own stories that elaborate on your individual Shepard's personality? Or, is it strictly for your own benefit so that you are able to immerse yourself in your Shepard's story, so that it fleshes her out and makes her a deeper character in your own eyes whilst playing the game?

I'm curious. Fanfiction is where people seem to enjoy sharing the stories of their individual Shepards, whereas some who expand the backstories of their characters prefer to keep it private and use it for their own benefit.

I have thought about writing, have a minor in English, but all of my stuff is more "New Yorker" or editorial stuff for the college newspaper.  I took one creative writing class and I could come up with the idea, but dialog shot me down.

I just like having a background story for my character.  She's an extension of my daydreams.

If they wanted the game to identify with young teen boys then why is the game rated M?
Actually, after playing the game it didn't really feel like I was playing a rated M game but that's reserved for another thread.  <_<

I also remember this.  I was dying to see what FemShep would look like with better graphics so I perused the forums trying to get information.  It was tough avoiding spoilers and I even found a live stream online somewhere of someone playing the game early with a FemShep.

It really sucks that the fans had to pick up the slack though.  I don't see how hard it is for a few screenshots and maybe a video or two released around the same time ME3 Sheploo stuff is put out.  We aren't asking for Sheploo to take a step aside, we just want some small tidbits and not a few days before the game's release!

In my OP, I stated that we would appreciate screenshots of dlc armor too.  Metal-Dragon-Kiryu was nice enough to get screens the day of the last DLC armor release but really.....

How hard is it for the devs to give us this stuff???

Yeah, we get a handful of screenshots about a week or so before release.

I too had to go on livestream to see FemShep in ME2. It was actually quite a special moment when I heard Jennifer Hale's voice.

I understand the whole marketing thing - I get it. But to not even show videos on the official site? Not cool.

I always thought they should have used a different custom Shepard for each of the class videos. Would have been a good way to show off the armor customisation too.

That would have been a great idea.  I don't understand any of their marketing ideas.  The fact that you could customize your Shepard, male, female, looks class, armor.  All of it should have been out there.

I remember talking to a girl who posed a lot for fantasy (sword and sorcerer) photography and in so doing wore a lot of chainmail, including chainmail bikinis.  Often she would not wear much underneath (not even a bra) and said that, oddly enough, it did not chafe.  She did have nipple pads made for her, but whether that was out of modesty or comfort, I don't know.

I'm also quite pleased and encouraged by the fact that BioWare have resisted sexualising FemShep so far. Her breasts remain moderately sized, and she is always wearing her full armour in combat, unlike Miranda, Samara or Jack who are in varying states of undress!

Again, it's another aspect of FemShep's character that reminds me of Samus Aran. A female protagonist that is not sexualised, and virtually always wear practical, protective armour.

How about something as simple as a picture of Jane Shepard on the rear of the packaging, with the tagline "Play as Commander Shepard as either gender!" Surely that's not too hard, no?

I remember one of the ME2 pre-release videos. One of the few that mentioned gender and customisation. And the whole time Casey Hudson was talking about being able to change Shepard's appearance, class, gender, etc., what did we see?

Sheploo.

Just Sheploo.

Thing is, I actually find the armor thing to make her more attractive. My brain refuses to think of costumes like Miranda's and Samara's as sexy because I know that's their excuse for "armor"

In ME1 it was different - full armor in battle, then the casual on the Normandy. Made Liara's labcoat kinda sexy. But if she was running around shooting things in it, I probably wouldn't have thought that.

Bah I'm not even making much sense now.
