I say it depends on the game. Being a guy, I don't mind to aimlessly frag bad guys every now and then. Doom, Quake, Duke Nuke 'Em, bring it on! :) For those type of games, obviously there's no connecting to the main character; at least not for me.

For an RPG, though, I guess Mass Effect has spoiled me: in the future, if it doesn't have the option to play the female protagonist, I probably won't play it at all. The Femshep experience is simply 1,000x better than I could ever derive from role playing a male.

Besides, I get to play Femshep and can *still* romance Liara. :) So it's all good.

Yes, yes she is.   She reminds me why I love playing FemShep so much.  She is so expressive.

Yep, you simply don't get that kind of expression with male shep. Not even close.

N.B. Both Shai and Kathryn looked particularly fine today, btw. :)

Wow... I'm so behind.

So, question to the screenshot flycam experts; is there ANY way to move the camera during cutscenes? I know there was an utterly awesome shot someone posted from the very opening of the Korlus mission, which had the camera moved to the side so femShep was crouching behind the barrier looking directly at the camera, with Garrus behind her, checking over his shoulder back the way they'd come. That shot is something I've tried to replicate and found impossible, because it's a cutscene that opens the mission so there's no way to move the camera.

I've had the same problem so...I'm curious to hear the answer to this as well.  In ME1, I think this could be done.  In ME2, not so much.

I use the Mass Effect 2 - Clean Movie mod for flycam and to move around during cutscenes you need to hold down the control key while moving the camera.

http://social.biowar...m/project/2825/

It works pretty good, but can be a little tricky because sometimes Shepard or one of the squadies will teleport or go out of focus.

The story would have to be exceptionally good for me to play a game where I didn't get the choice to play as a female character. It's not that I won't play a male character (I have 3 male sheps for the me2 romances), but I always prefer to experience a game first as a female. Besides, without the choice we would never have the awesomeness that is FemShep. :)

Yes, she does. I think that is why Ilike it so much. It's not a side you see often with Shepard.

A male protagonist won't stop me from playing a game. I have played games all my life and while it's unfortunate that many of those games had strong male leads, why should I suddenly stop? A good character is a good character, regardless of gender. On that note, I do want to see more strong female leads. Diversity and fairness is a great thing afterall.

I do a bit...it depends on what type of game it is.  If it's a role-playing game, I want the option to play as Female.  The games you mentioned spoiled me in that regard.

If I'm just playing the game where the main 'character' is an avatar that doesn't get true character development (and just runs around and shoots things or jumps over things like Super Mario) then I don't much care.

It's definitely affected which games I choose to play now. I've been looking for other rpg type games where I can play as a female but haven't had any luck finding one. I don't mind playing as a male, as I actually have a male shep I like very much in ME. But I still like playing the female as much as I can. Although it doesn't bother me when there isn't much story there. I can play as just about anything then.

That pics amazing! The fish are actually alive!

Yes, that is amazing.  The last two times I played the game, my Rachel Shepard's fish (the ones purchased on the Citadel) did die and needed replaced later on (it seems that if you go back to the shop they restock their fish supply).

The problem is the Firewalker pack...usually I get into the habit of running up to the cabin to feed them after every mission.  The Firewalker pack is a bit different, as it's made up of 6 mini missions, but all count towards the 'fish death timer' (I think it's 2 or 3 missions can be completed unfed before they die).  When I decide to do this DLC, I have a tendency to just stay at the galaxy map and quickly run through all the Firewalker Hammerhead missions asap, but forget about my fish :crying:

I prefer playing female characters, partly because they often make for more interesting protagonists, and partly because it somehow makes me feel all cool and subversive.
But what's integral to my enjoyment, regardless of sex, is the characterisation. For example, I don't mind being stuck in the shoes of Manuel Calavera, because he's one of the most brilliantly realised characters in the medium.
And to contrast, I would never in my life be caught playing BloodRayne.

So, in short, either works fine for me. Assuming the writing holds up.

This is quite lovely.  I like the lighting.

I've also been practicing doing some photomanips for ME : )
My screenshot folder is getting rather out of hand though...

I 've found Lair of the Shadow Broker has great lighting.  It makes femshep look really nice.

No, of course not.
I like being able to play as female, but I'm not going to refuse to play a game if it doesn't allow that option. That's just childish- it's a bit like someone offering you a delicious hot fudge sundae, and refusing it out of principle because they're using chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.
If the game has a good story and good characters, I don't care what gender I play. I could be playing an orangutang with leprosy for all it would matter.
If I turned my nose up at single-gender-only videogames, I would have never played Metal Gear Solid. I would have never played Half-Life or its sequels. I would have never played Silent Hill 2 or Penumbra, and you know I'd be kicking myself for that.
A good game is a good game. Period. It shouldn't matter what gender the character on the cover is.

Childish? How is it childish to have preferences? Not to mention thats name calling and you're in a public forum

For RPG's i play them because i like to fully immerse myself within that game, and it helps if i have a PC of the same sex as i am. Which is why i stated that i prefer those that allow us a choice, so i can have connection with a game

Thank you for everyone else who gave adult replies

I don't think Ashwraith meant to insult anyone. Refusing to play as a male character is just as bad as refusing to play as a female character. This does not conflict with wanting more female leads but it does mean that a writer should aim to create a character that is well developed and relatable.

Fistly, I wasn't referring to anyone specifically. Secondly, giving an opinion is not name calling.

Thirdly, there's a difference between preferring to play a female character, and refusing to play a game at all if you can't. My comments were geared more toward the second camp.

I'm not adverse to playing male, just much prefer female. OT but.. I tried the Half Life 2 Demo a while ago, and for the most part I liked it but I kind of gave up on it or even purchasing the game in the second half of the demo. My sense of direction was horrible and it kind of threw me off, but I think I'll give it a second try now.

Ok, but you referred to it as 'childish' in your answer, which is insulting to those of that opinion. It was in reply to my question of 'Do you prefer female PC games over male?' and myself and others have expressed the opinion of yes, we do. That is why it was offensive.

Keep it civil, people.
I think jlb used a good example of some games being fine playing as a male protogonist such as everyone's favorite pizza loving Italian, Mario.  I happened to enjoy Gears of War for it's over the top brutality and Marcus Fenix too.  The addition of Female soldiers to their campaign is refreshing though.  Future RPG's which allow you to customize a character will win big points from me if you can play as female.

Besides - who's ever going to live up to FemShep?

It greatly depends on the game, but if it is an RPG, then yes, not having the choice is a deal breaker.  Even not having a character creation system at all is a turn off for me.  The problem I have w/ a lot of male protagonists in video games is that they typically wind up being like an inbred love child of He-Man and Conan, if not in appearance at least in spirit.  While I love femShep, DA:O provides the a diversity of player characters that I can’t get enough of.  And I’m not a fan of straight on FPS at all.  Almost didn’t buy Fallout 3 because of that.  If I want to just kill things, I’ll play Age of Empire of Rise of Nations.

Getting back to femShep, I truly believe BW made a big mistake by not marketing her at all.  For me at least, she has become the new female PC standard.  As Ape said, it will be truly hard to top her.  She is the Beatles, Johnny Carson and 1963 Corvette Stingray of female protagonists.  And barely anyone knows about her.  A shame.

Maybe we could throw hissy fits at bioware for ending Shep's adventures at just 3, they might give in to fanservice?

Agreed on the advertising front. I had my fingers crossed that they'd maybe have femhawke on a DA2 cover etc but thats a no

It's not childish to realize that you're wasting money on a game if you're not going to play it for very long, or finish it. It's knowing yourself and having impulse control. I may have missed out on a few games because I wasn't interested because I could not play as a female character, but I know that there are quite a few that I would have played for a little while, and then put away forever. I'd prefer to have a smaller collection of games that I really enjoy, and come back to again and again.

For me, being able to play as a female character is a role playing thing, I can't get into making a character who is male. I can play a predefined male character, like John Marston, but even that game didn't grab my imagination, it was more of a story I was watching as I played, I didn't feel like I was a part of it. Being attached to my player character is part of the fun for me. If games aren't going to be fun, why play?
