I wouldn't mind not having Shepard in any sort of role outside of these three games. Rather she end on a good note than overstretch her influence to the point of being absurb, if that hasn't been done already!

For me, being able to play as a female character is a role playing thing, I can't get into making a character who is male. I can play a predefined male character, like John Marston, but even that game didn't grab my imagination, it was more of a story I was watching as I played, I didn't feel like I was a part of it. Being attached to my player character is part of the fun for me. If games aren't going to be fun, why play?

So if the game offered a predefined female character, would it also fail to grab your imagination? Or is the real issue more along the lines of what you can create versus games that give you a character to use?

Outside of a few vague and ambiguous references in various Mass Effect spin-off titles, I think that ME3 will be the last we see of Commander Shepard, I'm afraid. Due to the fact that Chud has confirmed that ME3 will feature wildly divergent paths, and many differing variables, I don't think it will be possible to import Shepard into any other ME game. There are simply too many different variables and permutations for her to play any kind of significant role.

Yeah, they've made it clear Shep's story ends there. Tis a shame, but if they came up with her hopefully they'll make a great replacement. Shes got a lot to live up to, though

I'm hoping i'll love my femhawke as much

I'm fine with ME3 being the end for Shep. As long as it is done well. I have read though that they are going to continue the ME Universe. I wonder what they might do next?

It's been quite a while since I've played a game (I mostly play role playing games) with a predefined female character.  Maybe the Longest Journey?  And since I really enjoy adventure games, and it had a fun story, I enjoyed it.  Are there any recent games with a compelling story and a female protagonist?  Because I'd be totally there.  If the story is compelling, and the game play is to my liking, and it is a male character, I'd be likely to try it, but I don't feel as connected to the character, and I don't really create backstories and use my imagination for male characters.

Basically, I know what I like, and there aren't a lot of games that fire my imagination lately, and a part of that is being able to play as a female.  Someone could interpret that as me having a limited imagination, but eh.  I really enjoy being female, I enjoy playing as female heroines, and if I have a choice at all, that's what I prefer.

The problem I have w/ a lot of male protagonists in video games is that they typically wind up being like an inbred love child of He-Man and Conan, if not in appearance at least in spirit.

Frightening thought, trying to imagine what that child would look like.

Getting back to femShep, I truly believe BW made a big mistake by not marketing her at all.  For me at least, she has become the new female PC standard.  As Ape said, it will be truly hard to top her.  She is the Beatles, Johnny Carson and 1963 Corvette Stingray of female protagonists.  And barely anyone knows about her.  A shame.

Yes, she is probably my favorite video game protagonist of all time, very unique, IMO, and, unfortunately, she is eclipsed by another boring stoic buzzcut male Space Marine....just another 1 of 100 gagillion that have existed and will exist in this medium.

I wouldn't say the story is very compelling, and the characterisation might be a bit on the sketchy side...but Mirror's Edge certainly has the most compelling gameplay and setting of any modern game I've come across. And it benefits further from having a female protagonist whose capabilities are never questioned or limited for the sake of some plot contrivance.
So, yeah, if you're willing to try something wholly original, I recommend Mirror's Edge.

On the subject of femShep, I've come to realise that for every playthrough, I make more demands of myself on making her persona both more nuanced and consistent. Anyone else caught in this process?

I like to think of FemShep as being a natural progression of the video game character archetype that was created by Samus Aran, from the Metroid series. Like Shepard, Samus is a strong, capable and powerful female protagonist of an epic sci-fi series. The introduction of her character was groundbreaking, as she was the first notable female video game player character. Commander Shepard is like a development of what was started by Samus. I think that FemShep does owe alot to Samus, as do most female video game protagonists. She laid the foundations, and others have since built upon them.

Hell, Shepard even reminds me of Samus, to a certain degree. Both are voiced by Jennifer Hale, after all!

Exactly!   I mean you dont need to look very far to see a movie or a game which fits the steriotypical role of manshep.  No offense to him, but he's everything that has been done before.   I grew up with it to the point Im bored of it all now.  Just another action hero.

Femshep puts a new perspective on everything and my enjoyment  of ME (which was already high) skyrocketed on my second play.  Finding another character that fits femshep...  not likely to find at all.   She's unique to the world. Its so strange that the same choices become so different with what gender you play.

To be honest, I don't think Shepard is much of a character in and of her/himself. You are only allowed some rudimentary characterisation, and there are no real opportunities for introspection which would serve to make Shep a more substantial character.
FemShep benefits from Hale's performance as an actor, but it's really the only divider.
But I also think that is part of her appeal. She isn't a whole other character in comparison with MaleShep, only the flip-side of the same coin. And I think it's a very positive thing that the two receive the same overall treatment throughout either game, the concept of gender rendered pretty much useless.

Well in three days Fallout New Vegas comes out.    Im sure the choices you make in that will be just as morally demanding as Fallout 3.    Some of those decisions are double edged swords!  Good fun

I know!! The idea of hardcore mode is just too exciting as well!  Making a new female protagonist will be fun. Although im sure she will be going along the same moral choices as my cannon femshep.   I may as well just name her after Shepard! :P

First off, let me second LiquidGrape's recommendation of Mirror's Edge. It's a nice little gem of a game featuring a believable, non-sexualized female protagonist who just happens to be awesome at what she does. I really hope EA actually brings that series back, because I absolutely adore it.

As for femShep, I think the appear is that well, she gets the job done - she gets no debuffs or cut corners because she's female, she doesn't rely on T/A shots all the time to impress, she is just good at her job. I've said it before and I'll say it again - gameplay wise I'm not a fan of either Halo or Gears of War: As someone who's played FPS games since 1993, I've seen everything those games do done before and better. And more to the point without characters who are so bland and stereotypical that they are barely even worthy of the label. Gordon Freeman is more interesting than the Master Chief or Marcuz Fenix and he never speaks!

FemShep breaks the mold - simply by being a 100% capable female Commander. ManShep is just another re-hash of what came before, sadly. I had hoped BioWare wanted to do more now that they defined the protagonist.

Right, there really isn't that much difference between the two in game (except, FemShep seems to get all the bugs and animation hangups) except for the voice acting and romances (but those are optional anyway).

You mentioned the one big difference, Hale's performance. She just brings so much life to the character that (I feel) is sorely lacking in the other version. She's not unemotional or stoic, so I find her more compelling as a leader and as a character.

Another thing we have to consider is gender roles....like I mentioned, we've seen tons of guys in this same role (super bad-ass space marine, saving the galaxy), most even look and act the same. It's so very very rare to see a female in this situation. It reminds me of what happened in my SciFi literature class in college, when we read, 'Starship Troopers'. The professor asked the class if a female could have fulfilled the role of the book's protagonist (another male space marine) and a surprising amount of the class answered 'no'. I, as well as the professor, argued 'yes', of course. :P

But, it goes to show you how rare it is to see a female fill the role of the 'badass space marine' in Science Fiction. The genre has been completely male dominated for many many years, with females only serving roles as being hot-alien babes or femme fatale androids, etc.

So, yes, even though both FemShep and MaleShep are nearly identical in ME, the little things I discussed above go along way into making FemShep a much much better character, IMO.

Exactly they are identical, except we filter them through our experience with Western culture. Sheploo is a type of character that has existed before and will exist again, he's existed in other games, in movies and books. He exists against the backdrop of stereotypes and tropes that mark his actions, for example ManShep can be accused of "Kirking" Liara and Tali. It doesn't matter if it's the truth or not just by being a man he can be compared to other male figures in other media in similar situations. However merely by being female FemShep lacks any comparable figures in popular media, she can act in exactly the same way but we precieve it as different because of her gender.
