To be fair, if it did, they'd probablly cut the option to play anything but the default Shepard as well.

I don't expect it to happen, since BioWare seems to still be in the "mostly in control but with a better budget" stage that Origin had for a couple of years, but considering the contracts the guys at Origin admitted to signing years later, I can't take any "That's ludicrous!  We're in total control!" to be anything more than them fulfilling their company obligations.  <_<

But after ME3... who knows?  :crying:

If it happened for ME3, I'd be devastasted. And I honestly think Bioware isn't insane. But with EA paying the bills, indeed, after the third and last installment, who knows...

Honestly, I think the gaming community has moved on from the mid-90s era just enough to awknowledge there's a place for female protagonists. Unfortunately, it hasn't moved on enough where, if given the choice between male or female, it's the female that gets marketing. No, females only get marketed if that's your only choice.

Funny, I didn't think I was in a foul mood, but my posts are kinda a downer right now.

I must agree with my colleges :D

I'm a guy, and I love my classic male hero characters: John McClain, Martin Riggs, "Dirty" Harry Callahan, Captain James T. Kirk, etc....

...but I also love a good female hero as well: Ellen Ripley, Sarah Conner, etc.

As was said before, female protaginists in games are rare.....good ones that aren't the usual stereotypical heroines..orare just downright  rediculous, are even rarer.   So when a friend showed me ME for the first time and I found you could play as a female, I was sold....when I found out good the story was, I was hooked.

...Plus I know we all love having our own unique FemSheps to look at on the screen

@ pacifen: i don't see that as a downer - it's the reality of where VGs have come from - and how far they have yet to go as far as female protagonists are concerned.

i think another thing i really like about femshep (and i've said this before) is that jennifer hale's performance really blurs the line between avatar and character. rather than just picking a line of dialog out of a line-up, hale's performance gives it this unexpected quality - like you're hearing the line spoken by an actor and only minimally exerting control over that character. male shep is more avatar like to me - more like the entrance to the shooter game. to me, femshep is more the character IN the ME world. to fully immerse in the game, i prefer femshep. she just fits her role so well.

my preference, anyhow

Why FemShep?

I was about twelve at a friend's sleepover, and over the course of the night we went through Alien, Aliens, Terminator, and Terminator 2. Quite the age to be exposed to six to eight hours of Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor, I promise you. Established a relationship with the strong female protagonist that's going strong almost two decades later; any chance I get to recapture it I go for it. Bioware's been good to me in that regard, but FemShep is absolutely a high point for all the obvious reasons.

For
me,  I played ME with a MaleShep first, the absolute default Soldier
setup actually, because I didn't wanna bother with character creation.
After 2 playthroughs with him, I thought, why not play a FemShep now for a change?
Of corse I got promptly flamed by a colleague: "Dude you're playing a woman!? That's so GAY!"
[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wondering.png[/smilie]
Anyway... I had more fun playing with a FemShep.
This
might be due to Jennifer Hale's great voice acting (nothing against Mark
Meer), wich for me is the main reason I play a female. But it also just
feels "right", I can't really explain it but playing a FemShep, for me,
just fits better for the  story and the ME universe.

Re: Why FemShep?

If there is anything about this question, it's how it can be reasonably answered in more ways than one.

I am a guy, but I play FemShep quite a lot. The feeling that I'm playing a lively and badass female protagonist in and of itself is glorious. How many times have we been forced to play a male protagonist? How many times have we been forced to see a male protagonist showing off his power? And more importantly, how often do we see a male protagonist that has a sense of originality to him?

There is nothing more emotionally engaging and compelling than hearing FemShep give her speech prior to the suicide mission. There is nothing more badass than FemShep threatening a bunch of scum batarians. If I want an original and one-of-a-kind experience, FemShep is the way to go. There is something that makes me so emotionally attached to my FemShep, even though she's not my primary (as a matter of fact, Sheploo is my primary!). But I'd choose her universe over my MaleShep's because she's just that bright of a character.

Also, there is Thane's romance! :o

Kind of sick of muscle packed action heroes. :D

Okay, Male Shepard isn't as bad as others, but i have other male heroes everywhere else. That doesn't mean i always choose female characters (if there are just pre-made chars, it also depends on my preferred abilities and so on), but i mostly do so in games where i can create them myself, like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout or in MMOs. I also love to see me character in cutscenes and dialogues, so i hope Dragon Age II will be more like Mass Effect here. I just can't stand those rigid conversations (like in Fallout or DA) and non-voiced heroes (the main thing i disliked about Dragon Age) anymore.

Others might want to play as the typical male action hero, but i'd also like to have some eyecandy while playing. On the other hand, my female Shepard is my most favorite videogame character ever. I can feel with her, she has a deep background (which is much more than like 80% of the other lead characters out there have) and i really feel kind of attached to here where the lead protagonists in other games might just leave me cold because they have no personality.

Hell, i'd love to see other games adapt the Mass Effect system. It would fit perfectly with a Star Trek or StarGate game. *needs*

There was again lots of lovely FemSheps there and I think there was even one new comer also. Welcome Calla S. Dia looks badass. :D

When I got Mass Effect I didn't actually know much more than it's awesome game. My friend recommended it. I knew that there was possibility to play as female tho. Not that it mattered at the time since I really trust my friends taste in games, She plays as female if that's possible.

No matter the game if there's choice to play as female that is what my first and mostly second playthroughs are. In ME I got much more than just female lead. I got strong and believable female hero voiced by Hale. That was like getting christmas presents really early.

As some of the others here, I'm also tired of those male heroes we are forced to play way too often. Man saves the day. You see it all the time. Female saves the day and is believable as well awesome. That's something I really want to see more often.

I do play as MaleShep from time to time. Mostly to get Ash romance and maybe later Miranda and Tali if I just can stand the empty locker scene again.

How did I get that long answer to simple question?

Jennifer is telling me that I need to stop writing now... :D

My sentiments exactly.

For those of you on a pc... quit wishing about romancing Ash and do it! Prosperity doesn't get a lot of screenie love from me because she's the default out of necessity, but here's one for her.

looksPosted Image...whenever i get the choice i alway go for the female option...comes from playing MMOs when you have to look at someones backside for hours on end...so i always choose a female backside...at least for my main/canon characters

Doesnt hurt that Hale turned out to be a better VA than Meer

@FieryPhoenix7...thanks for the compliment...one does tryPosted Image

@Sable...nice pic...shame we cant mod it into the game

@Scamper...eww...Ash is not attractive...even if it is girl/girl action

Like a lot of people here I always play a female character when given a choice. But what keeps me coming back to FemShep is Jennifer Hale's excellent voice work. If it's possible to be in love with a voice than I am. :)

C'mon Chugster, looks aren't everything. I happen to like Ash's personality a lot. She's the bff of all my other FemSheps. I know she comes off a bit racist but I think her character has a lot of potential for growth. Even if she does need a kick up the backside every now and then for some of those comments she makes.

I guess my answer goes something like this: Nothing drew me to her. It wasn't a choice like what color socks I'm going to wear today. I am female and prefer to play as female. I feel like I need a break from frequently having to identify with the heroic male protagonist-- in books, movies, games, tv shows, etc. Even though I enjoy these stories and gaming experiences told through the male perspective, it's tiring. I will play a heroic female protagonist whenever the chance is offered because it's not offered at a frequency that approaches parity.

Ari Shepard approves this message.

I chose FemShep because if I'm ever given a choice, I always choose a female protagonist. Since I myself am female, I tend to identify with a female PC. It's not hard to find a good game with a male hero. The same can't be said about females. There are not many games out there that have successfully created such a strong and believable female hero. Shepard is feminine in her own right. She can hold her own.

http://img834.images...4/1709/dia4.png Something about this image, I guess Shepard's long-suffering look and Miranda's seeming consideration, always makes me think "You know, Miranda, I get that if you gain like two pounds you'll have to ditch that spray-on catsuit but the rest of us would like to order too..."

And while Ashley certainly didn't grab me at first - and the approach to the Citadel where she looks out the window does her no favors, I swear her face is half again as wide as it usually is in that shot - but she's grown on me. Not classically beautiful, perhaps, but in the striking (in a good way) to cute range. And come on; she's a great character. Even if you don't like her personally, she's a good counterpoint or protege to Shepard depending on your approach.
