I dont think there's only one explanation.
My first playthrough was MaleShep. After I finished it, it was "ok, now what?" The gameplay was great, but I couldn't immerse in the story.
I wasn't 'drawn' to femshep. I had no idea who J. Hale was at that time. I played a 2nd playthrough just to explore the game. But her performance changed everything, I wanted to know more. Got hooked on the story. And then I bought ME1 to complete my doom. It was there I created Abby, my canon shep.
The "I play my own gender" thing it doesnt work for me, clearly. I know it does for many people. "I'm a woman, so I play femshep. I'm a guy, so I play maleshep"In my case, I think I was tired of the same cliche. Badass marine saving the world, saving the galaxy. The same thing over and over. The worst of it, I probably wasnt even aware of that. But a strong female heroine doing the saving much more gracefully, it was a refreshing experience to say the least...
